Memorial Day mattress sales
We've been keeping a close eye on fluctuating sale prices, and in recent years we have found that Memorial Day mattress sales are better than any other holiday, including Black Friday. Look out for discounts throughout the month, as many brands run sales for an extended period (not just over the holiday weekend).
You can learn about our 14 top-tested mattresses (with prices listed for Queen sizes) below, but for the most common mattress categories, here are your best bets:
- Best Innerspring Mattress: Saatva Classic Mattress
- Best Memory Foam Mattress: Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud
- Best Hybrid Mattress: Bear Elite Hybrid
- Best Mattress Under $500: Allswell Luxe Hybrid
Pros
High scores for comfort and support from long-term users
Excellent customer service with free delivery, setup and old mattress removal
Good edge support and breathability
Cons
Less pressure relief and motion isolation than foam mattresses
EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNT: Good Housekeeping readers can take 20% off their Saatva mattress orders (with a minimum $1,000 spend) when using our exclusive link through Memorial Day.
Mattress type: Innerspring | Height: 11.5 or 14.5 in. | Firmness: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm | Trial period: 365 days (with a $99 return pickup fee)
Who it's best for
This Saatva model is best suited for sleepers who prefer a traditional, firm and bouncy mattress instead of the sinking-in feel of memory foam. It even has enhanced edge support, which makes it easier to get in and out of bed. And with the full-service setup and mattress removal available for no extra charge, it's great for those who can't (or don't want to) do a DIY setup.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Support: We've surveyed over 100 Saatva mattress owners, who consistently gave it high scores for support. Our testers especially liked the fact that it felt firmer and offered more edge support than memory foam mattresses, which is not surprising because it's construction is primarily made of steel coils.
✔️ Comfort & sleep quality: Despite it feeling firmer than memory foam models, our testers gave it top ratings for comfort and sleep quality, with one saying it was "just the right amount of plush" and another saying it was "not too firm, yet not too squishy." One user even said it led to "the best sleep I've ever had." Just note that the innerspring construction offers less pressure relief and motion isolation than foam mattresses.
✔️ Breathability: Our testers unanimously said they stayed at a comfortable temperature throughout the night on this bed. Because it's filled with coils instead of foam, the mattress allows for better airflow and less heat retention.
✔️ Durability: Though Saatva costs more than a boxed mattress, you can expect it to last because steel coils hold up better than memory foam. Our testers confirmed this to be true, and the craftsmanship stood out in their reviews. One user told us, "It is obvious that a great deal of detail went into making this mattress."
✔️ Customer service: Ordering and in-home setup went smoothly in our at-home tests, and any issues that came up during the process were quickly resolved. This model is convenient to buy online and includes setup in your home rather than shipping in a box for DIY setup. It comes in two heights and three firmness levels, and there's a year-long trial period so you can get a refund if it's not a good fit (minus a $99 return pickup fee).
Two things to keep in mind regarding the price: First, we've seen Saatva prices regularly increase over the past several years. Second, we've noticed that it's almost always marked down, so avoid paying full price for this one.

Bear Elite Hybrid

Pros
Combines memory foam and coils so you don't have to choose
Perfect comfort and support ratings from every tester
Users reported improved sleep quality
Cons
Outer cover pilled over time
EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNT: Good Housekeeping readers can take 40% off their Bear mattress orders with code GH40 through Memorial Day.
Mattress type: Hybrid | Height: 14 in. | Firmness: Soft, Medium, Firm | Trial period: 120 days
Who it's best for
Side sleepers, back sleepers and people with back pain will benefit most from this Bear mattress. It's also great for indecisive shoppers or anyone who has struggled to find an exceptionally comfortable bed, as the user satisfaction and comfort ratings have been unmatched in our tests. In fact, it's the mattress I sleep on in my own home.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Comfort & sleep quality: This model unanimously earned perfect comfort and sleep quality ratings from all of our testers. They told us they have better, more uninterrupted sleep than on any other mattress they tried before. Plus, none of them felt overheated when sleeping on it.
One tester said, "It is the most comfortable mattress we have ever slept on," while another told us, "This is undoubtedly the best mattress we have ever owned. We have traveled all over and have never had the sleep experience we now have every night." A third tester added, "I find myself genuinely looking forward to laying down at the end of the day — and not just because I'm tired, the mattress is that comfortable."
✔️ Support: Although the mattress has cushy foam on top, our testers still gave it perfect ratings for support. A tester said, "I love how supportive this mattress is without being too firm. It has saved me from weeks of hip and back pain."
✔️ Edge support: Testers were thrilled with the reinforced edges, meaning the sides of the bed held up under their weight. This stands out compared to other boxed mattresses, as most edges sink in under pressure.
✔️ Materials & construction: This hybrid mattress combines memory foam and coils, so you get the benefits of both: It has cradling foam on top, but doesn't sink in too much. The boxed model is intended for DIY setup, but you can add a white-glove delivery service for an extra $175. The only downside is that after two years of use, I noticed pilling on the outer cover (though that hasn't affected the overall comfort).
One thing to note: The brand makes claims about using natural minerals that turn your body heat into energy, which is then reflected back to you to enhance recovery. We couldn't verify these claims in our research.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud

Pros
Adapts to your body shape, providing pressure relief
High-quality Tempur-Pedic foam at a more affordable price
Superior motion isolation for couples
Cons
10-inch height is on the lower side
Mattress type: Memory foam | Height: 10 in. | Firmness: Medium | Trial period: 90 days
Who it's best for
This foam mattress takes weight off of pressure points like shoulders and hips, making it best for side sleepers and back pain sufferers. It also has excellent motion isolation for couples who share a bed. And if you've ever wanted to try Tempur-Pedic mattresses but have been hesitant because of the high price, this one offers the brand's signature foam in a boxed mattress that doesn't cost a fortune.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Pressure relief: Memory foam molds to your body, making you feel cradled and helping to keep your spine in neutral alignment. The brand says that although it may feel a bit too firm when you first lie down, it slowly adapts to your body shape to feel like a personalized fit. Testers agreed, with one describing it as a "feeling of sinking into a warm hug when you sleep."
✔️ Motion isolation: As one tester put it, "When my husband gets into bed (always after I go to bed), I feel nothing. I am not disturbed at all and almost never even wake up if I am asleep."
✔️ Comfort & support: Our reviewers gave this mattress high ratings and a lot of praise for comfort and support, telling us they slept well on it. "We were delighted with the comfort," said one tester, while another noted, "I feel like my entire body is supported in a very gentle way."
✔️ Quality & durability: A tester compared this model to a previous mattress-in-a-box they slept on and said, "It was definitely a major upgrade." Our panelists also noted that the foam held up surprisingly well over time. Just note that at only 10 inches tall, it's a bit on the short side.
✔️ Easy DIY setup: The mattress ships in a box for you to set up on your own. Despite it being heavy, our testers unanimously said it was easy and they had no issues to report.
If you prefer a model with coils, you can upgrade to a hybrid version for an extra $200. However, our testers tended to like the all-foam models from Tempur-Pedic better, which makes sense because the brand's foam is considered best in class.

Pros
Hybrid model includes foam and coils
Quick delivery and easy DIY setup
Users said it feels like an expensive hotel bed
Cons
Lacks edge support
Mattress type: Hybrid | Height: 12 in. | Firmness: Medium | Trial period: 90 days
Who it's best for
Price conscious shoppers, apartment renters and first-time home owners are the best fit for this model, which stands out for being an affordable mattress that doesn't sacrifice comfort. It's also better suited for younger adults (especially people in their 20s) based on feedback from our testers, and it's ideal for anyone who prefers a cushy sleeping surface.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Plush comfort: Although the brand rates this mattress as a medium firmness, we found it to be on the softer side. Testers loved the hybrid feel of foam and coils, with one saying, "This mattress is supportive and plush, and it feels like a fancy hotel bed."
✔️ Support: Despite feeling soft, it is still supportive. "I like the support that it provides without being firm," said one tester. "I wake up feeling refreshed." Some of our reviewers even said it got rid of their neck and back pain.
✔️ Excellent value: It outperformed other hybrid models that cost over $1,000, and testers couldn't believe how expensive it it felt. We've seen mattress prices regularly increase, but this one has remained low over time. And the price stays consistent, so there's no need to wait for a holiday weekend to buy it.
✔️ Quick delivery & easy setup: Your purchase includes free shipping, and the mattress arrives in a box within days of ordering for you to set up on your own. Although it's heavy, testers told us that mattress setup was easy.
✔️ Edge support: One downside that our testers called out was that it lacked edge support, meaning it may sink in under your weight when you get in and out of bed. This can be an issue for older individuals or anyone with mobility limitations.

Pros
Medium firmness for combination sleepers
Good compromise for partners with different preferences
Zoned coils for ergonomic support
Cons
Motion isolation could be better
EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNT: Good Housekeeping readers can take 27% off their Helix mattress orders with code GH27 through Memorial Day
Mattress type: Hybrid | Height: 14 in. | Firmness: Medium | Trial period: 100 days
Who it's best for
This hybrid mattress has a true medium feel (not too hard yet not too soft), making it ideal for couples with different firmness preferences. It's also great for people who change sleeping positions throughout the night.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Balanced firmness: Testers noted that they felt properly supported whether on their sides, backs or stomachs. As one reviewer highlighted, "It's a good mix for me (a side sleeper) and my partner (a back sleeper)." The hybrid model has its coils in zoned sections with varying firmness for ergonomic support and alignment.
✔️ Pressure relief: Users described this model as having a contouring feel against pressure points. One said, "It feels plush but doesn't feel like it's swallowing me up, and there's just enough bounce that allows me to shift and turn over in the night."
✔️ Construction: It's tall for a boxed mattress at 14 inches (most are 10 to 12 inches) and it has plenty of layers and zones for ergonomic alignment. The trade-off is that it's heavier to set up. Also, our testers noted that they could sometimes feel their sleeping partner move if they were too close together, meaning it lacks motion isolation compared to all-foam models.
Helix offers a wide assortment of mattresses (so many that it offers a sleep quiz to find your best fit) and we've tested many of them, but our analysts and consumer testers were most impressed by this Dusk Luxe.

Pros
Easy ordering and DIY setup
Ergonomic support
Users said it maintains its shape over time
Cons
Casper will be phasing out this model eventually as it updates its assortment
Mattress type: Memory foam | Height: 11 in. | Firmness: Medium firm | Trial period: 100 days
Who it's best for
Casper's all-foam model is best suited for sleepers who prefer the cradling feel of memory foam and are willing to splurge a bit more for ergonomic support. It's most ideal for side and back sleepers (as opposed to stomach sleepers) because of its zoned sections for alignment.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Ergonomic alignment: Casper has a variety of popular mattresses, but this all-foam Original model has zoned layers that are designed for spinal alignment. It's softer around the shoulders, while firmer around the hips, waist and lower back. Users liked the support this offered. One told us, "it conforms to your body," and another reviewer said, "It is extremely comfy — so comfy that we bought two more for other beds."
✔️ Motion isolation: Because it's all foam, you can expect it to block the feeling of your sleeping partner moving better than other types of construction. One user on our panel pointed out, "It helps with motion transfer much more than the old innerspring mattress I had."
✔️ Easy ordering & setup: Our reviewers gave this mattress high marks for the smooth ordering process and easy setup. The mattress is a moderate 11 inches tall, meaning it's on the taller side for a boxed foam mattress, but not too tall or heavy compared to hybrids.
✔️ Brand trustworthiness: We've surveyed more than 250 Casper mattress owners for in-depth feedback. Most gave the mattresses high scores and said they kept their shape over time.
Casper updated its mattress assortment and we have been testing the newer One model (pictured here). It's similar to the Original, but it costs several hundred dollars less — the Queen size is under $1,000 — and it doesn't have zoned support. Based on tester feedback, we recommend the Original over the One. Though the Original may be phased out as a result of this assortment update, you can currently buy it online.

Pros
Supportive foam with motion isolation
Low cost compared to similar brands
Quick shipping
Cons
Lacks edge support
Mattress type: Memory foam | Height: 9.5 in. | Firmness: Firm | Trial period: 100 days
Who it's best for
Tuft & Needle's all-foam mattress is a great option for anyone who wants the pressure-relieving benefits of foam, yet prefers a firmer feel instead of a cushy surface. It's also more affordable than other mattresses we recommend, mainly because it's a basic, no-frills model with just two layers of foam.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Firm support: Our reviewers gave this mattress high ratings for comfort and support, with several attributing this to the foam's firmness. One described it by saying, "I like that I don't sink in," while another told us, "The mattress feels firm and supportive." The only real complaint was that there wasn't much edge support, so it may sag when you sit on the sides.
✔️ Pain relief: Testers frequently reported that it helped alleviate chronic back pain. A recent tester noted, "my back felt better on this mattress," while a user who had it for five years said, "my Tuft & Needle mattress is so much more comfortable than any mattress I've ever had in the past. My husband and I both experience much less back pain."
✔️ Motion isolation: Our testers also said they couldn't feel movement from sleeping partners. "It doesn't buckle or shift when my spouse moves in bed," one said.
✔️ Convenient shipping: It's almost always in stock on Amazon (since it's not made to order) and arrives within days, which is a big deal if you need a mattress quickly — the industry is notorious for its shipping delays. Our reviewers gave it high marks for the ordering process and setup.

Pros
Testers swore it eased back pain
High scores for comfort and support
Users said it sleeps cooler than other foam models
Cons
Low height may be troublesome for those with mobility issues
Mattress type: Memory foam | Height: 10 in. | Firmness: Medium | Trial period: 120 days
Who it's best for
Our testers reported that this Nolah mattress alleviated pain, making it a great option for sleepers struggling with hip pain, back pain, pregnancy-related pain and sciatica. It's also good for side sleepers thanks to its pressure-relieving foam and medium firmness level.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Pain relief: Our reviewers swore this mattress eased their discomfort. One said, "it has been significantly helpful in relieving back pain for my husband, who has scoliosis." Another tester of the hybrid variation said, "on the first day of testing, I went to bed with a strained back from hours of sitting at my desk. When I woke up the next day, the pain was completely gone."
✔️ Materials & construction: This model checks off the boxes for qualities of a mattress for back pain, including memory foam and a medium firmness level, which provide pressure relief and a cradling feel. One user told us this model "offers back support while still cradling pressure points." Plus, an owner who's had it for four years said it has kept its shape well.
If you're not used to sleeping on an all-foam mattress like this one, it may take some getting used to. Testers told us it felt too soft at first, but they ultimately loved sleeping on it and found it to be supportive.
✔️ Cooling: Though memory foam is known to trap heat, reviewers told us this one sleeps surprisingly cool. All testers said they maintained a comfortable body temperature when sleeping on it.
✔️ Motion isolation: "This mattress is good for couples who have different sleep schedules," a tester told us. "Movement on one side of the bed doesn’t transfer to the other side. After switching to this mattress, I don’t wake up at all when my husband comes to bed late or gets out of bed."
The one thing to keep in mind is that it's only 10 inches high, which may make it more difficult for some people to get in and out of bed. Nolah's Evolution 15-inch model is a taller, more expensive hybrid model that was also loved by our reviewers with back pain.

Pros
Unique innerspring coils for firm support
Doesn't sink in under pressure
High-quality and hand-crafted materials
Cons
Over $2,000
Less pressure relief for those who need it
Mattress type: Innerspring | Height: 14.5 in. (or 15 in. with a pillowtop) | Firmness: Soft, Firm, Pillowtop Soft, Pillowtop Firm | Trial period: 90 days
Who it's best for
This model is for anyone who prefers a firm mattress: It's labeled as a 9 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Stomach sleepers and heavier body weights benefit most from a firm surface that doesn't sink in under pressure.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Support: We reviewed surveys from over 150 Stearns & Foster mattress owners, and the brand was especially loved by those who prefer a firm feel. When comparing this mattress to previous ones they owned, users highlighted the firmness and support as the main upgrades, though you sacrifice the pressure-relieving benefits of foam. One tester noted that the mattress feels "thicker and firmer, and seems to have more support."
✔️ Craftsmanship: This mattress is made with a complex coil system that's available in multiple firmness levels (i.e., not just firm). It uses high-quality materials and is handcrafted, so you can expect it to last longer than other cheaply made beds. "I like how firm this mattress is as well as the quality of the outer material," one user told us.
✔️ Versatility: It's widely available at mattress retailers, meaning you can try it out in a showroom before you buy. And although it's expensive, the price includes in-home delivery and setup as an added benefit. We also love how it can be used with adjustable bases.

Kept its shape well in at-home tests
Cons
Testers didn't seem to notice the claimed cooling effect
Mattress type: Hybrid | Height: 12 in. | Firmness: Medium Plush | Trial period: 101 days
Who it's best for
People who prefer a soft mattress will love the feel of this Puffy bed: It's indulgently plush, yet still supportive — i.e., it doesn't sink in or sag under pressure. It's an ideal mattress for side sleepers and back pain sufferer, thanks to its cushioning pressure relief.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Comfort & support: This hybrid model combines coils and foam layers and conforms to your body for a cushy feel. One tester said, "I feel like I'm sleeping on a cloud, but I still feel supported," while another told us, "it's not too hard and not too soft." A third summarized it by saying, "It really is the best of both worlds. It provides the softness of memory foam beds, but still feels supportive like traditional mattresses." Just note that although the brand claims to use cooling features, it wasn't noticeable to some testers.
✔️ Pain relief: One of the most common highlights from our reviewers was that they experienced fewer aches and pains from it (especially compared to innerspring beds). As one tester told us, "My favorite thing about this mattress is that it completely relieved my lower back pain!"
✔️ Shape retention: Although it conformed to users' bodies, it still held up to pressure. Users reported that it kept its shape nicely without forming indents.

Pros
Testers consistently tell us it sleeps cool
Elastic grid is squishy yet supportive
Good pressure relief and motion isolation
Cons
Some users experienced shipping delays
Mattress type: Memory foam | Height: 9.25 in. | Firmness: Medium firm | Trial period: 100 days
Who it's best for
Hot sleepers who feel sweaty at night will benefit from Purple's grid-shaped top layer, allowing for increased airflow that helps it feel exceptionally cooler. This mattress is also great for couples due to its motion isolation and for heavier body weights, thanks to its 600-pound capacity (or 300 pounds on each side).
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Innovative material: There are a lot of similarities between most mattress materials, but Purple is unique because of the GelFlex Grid: An elastic top layer that feels squishy yet surprisingly firm.
✔️ Cooling: Testers noted that the cooling capabilities were obvious, saying it felt noticeably cooler than other beds they'd owned and ultimately led to better sleep.
✔️ Supportive: Our panelists swore it felt like the perfect combination of soft and firm. As one put it, "It's 'springy' and conforms to my body while still being supportive." Others described it as feeling like "sleeping on air," and, "like floating in every sleeping position."
✔️ Motion isolation: Users also told us they couldn't feel their partners moving throughout the night because of its superior motion isolation.
✔️ Shipping: The main issue with this model is that several told us the delivery took longer than expected.

Some long-term Serta owners said the mattress felt less comfortable over time
Mattress type: Hybrid | Height: 12 in. | Firmness: Standard Plush, Enhanced Plush, Standard Firm, Enhanced Firm | Trial period: 120 days
Who it's best for
This Serta model is especially good for price-conscious shoppers who want to get as close to a luxury model as possible without spending a fortune: It's comfortable, supportive and costs less than $1,000.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Convenience: This mattress is widely available at mattress retailers, making it easy to check it out in person before you buy. It also arrives via a delivery service rather than getting compressed into a box.
✔️ Comfort & support: Testers consistently gave this model high ratings for its comfort and support. "The minute you lay down you don't sink in, which is amazing," said a tester. "It really conforms to the silhouette of your body."
✔️ Pain relief: One reviewer told us, "I have chronic shoulder and back pain. This mattress has such great support that I no longer wake up feeling achy. I now wake up feeling refreshed." Another tester agreed, saying, "I was less sore waking up from a night sleep on this mattress than my previous. I don't think I had one instance when waking up and thinking 'I slept on the wrong side' or 'Why am I so sore?'"
✔️ Brand satisfaction: Serta's Perfect Sleeper line is one of the most searched for mattresses and it's also one of the most commonly purchased models among our panel of consumer testers. We heard from well over 1,000 Serta mattress owners in our latest survey and the Perfect Sleeper line in particular received high ratings for support, though some long-term owners did complain that it hasn't held up as well as they hoped. Still, most were happy.

Durable construction
Cons
Pillowtop and in-home setup cost extra
Mattress type: Latex hybrid | Height: 11, 13 or 15.5 in. | Firmness: Plush, Medium, Firm | Trial period: 365 days
Who it's best for
Eco-conscious shoppers who prefer to buy organic beds instead of memory foam and synthetic fabrics will especially appreciate Avocado's latex hybrid, which uses natural and organic materials. The best part is that it doesn't skimp on quality by going green; in fact, it earned one of the highest scores for delivering quality sleep among our panel.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Certified organic: Not all latex mattresses are organic, but we verified that this one's certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) so you know the entire manufacturing process follows strict guidelines on the materials and ingredients used.
✔️ Firm support: Latex offers more of a floating feel compared to the sinking-in feel of memory foam. Users told us they love sleeping on it and said it kept their body weight evenly distributed. One tester told us, "The mattress is very comfortable, conforms to your body and has bounce," while another added, "It is very firm like a good solid hug, but at the same time conforms to you and embraces you."
✔️ Craftsmanship & durability: This mattress is exceptionally well made: Because it doesn't use synthetic adhesives, its layers are hand-tufted. As a result, our reviewers noted that it's long lasting with no issues to report. As one of our reviewers recapped, "I like that it's made of organic and natural materials, that it's extremely comfortable and that it's held up even after years."
Keep in mind that if you prefer the pillow top model, it will cost an additional $700. In-home setup will also cost extra.

Mattress type: Adjustable | Height: 11 in. | Firmness: Adjustable | Trial period: 100 days
Who it's best for
Sleep Number mattresses are perfect for couples, especially ones who don't agree on firmness level. This model in particular includes a 5-inch layer of foam for sleepers who prioritize pressure relief and support. Also keep in mind: This one is backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal's limited warranty.
How it performed in our tests
✔️ Sleep quality: Sleep Number got high scores for comfort, support and sleep quality from our consumer testers and more than 300 people on our survey panel. Even those who had the bed for close to 10 years gave it positive reviews, showing that it's a worthy investment in the long run. One Sleep Number owner told us, “I was initially hesitant because of the cost, but as soon as I laid on it, it changed my mind,” while another said, “I really feel like it gives me a custom sleep experience."
✔️ Smart features: The mattress is filled with adjustable air chambers so each side of the bed can be customized to whatever firmness level you choose. Plus, biometric sensors in the mattress can tell if you've switched positions and it'll automatically adjust so you stay at your preferred firmness all night. The mattress also has sleep-tracking capabilities to give you feedback through its app.
✔️ Reliable setup: Sleep Number offers a variety of delivery options, including having a team show you how everything works. Our testers reported that delivery and setup went smoothly in their evaluations with no major issues to report.
One thing to note: Although it's expensive, we find that it often goes on sale. If you're considering purchasing, keep an eye out for markdowns instead of paying full price.

How we test mattresses

The fiber scientists in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab have tested over 200 mattress models through hands-on analysis and with the help of at-home consumer testers. We've also surveyed more than 10,000 mattress owners to get data on the beds they purchased for themselves.
All in all, we've reviewed responses to more than 180,000 questions before making our recommendations. We continue to update this page as we receive new insights and as new mattresses are tested by our experts. Here's how we evaluate each model:

✔️ Expert research: We start by reviewing materials, specifications, added features and any noteworthy claims. We also vet the brands to check for common complaints and make sure they're trustworthy. Sometimes mattress brands do a great job of marketing to get on your radar, but we've eliminated ones with red flags for quality or customer service.
✔️ Hands-on analysis: Next, product experts and consumer testers experience the mattresses firsthand for setting up and sleep testing. We ask for feedback after several weeks, then again after extended periods to see how the mattresses hold up over time. We also survey our larger tester panel for additional feedback on the mattresses they own.

✔️ Ordering & delivery: Users tell us whether the mattress was easy to order and if it arrived quickly. If there were any problems during the delivery process, we get intel on how (and if) those issues were resolved by the brand.
✔️ Setup: Our reviewers weigh in on the setup process, regardless of whether it was DIY or via delivery service. They also rate whether the mattress quickly took shape after arrival.
✔️ Comfort & support: Testers share feedback on how comfortable and supportive the mattress felt, including opinions after sleeping on the mattress right away and after a longer adjustment period.

✔️ Firmness level: Each tester gives a perceived firmness rating, which is important because sometimes the brand's claimed rating doesn't match what users feel during real use.
✔️ Edge support: Users tell us about whether the edges of the mattress sink in under their weight or hold up to pressure.
✔️ Temperature regulation: Regardless of cooling claims, we ask reviewers to rate how comfortable their body temperature remained while sleeping on the mattress.

✔️ Sleep quality: Our survey respondents weigh in on whether the mattress seemed to affect their sleep quality (good or bad!) and whether or not they woke up feeling sore. They also give the mattress an overall satisfaction rating and have the opportunity to compare the model to previous beds they've slept on.
✔️ Additional feedback: In addition to scored questions, our testers have the opportunity to specify likes, dislikes and additional comments to help us get a full picture of their testing experience.
How to shop for a mattress

There isn't one model that's best for everyone, so it's important to think about your personal needs when shopping for a mattress. Here's what to consider before you buy:
✔️ Sleep position: The goal is to keep your spine in neutral alignment, so factoring in how you sleep can help narrow down your search. Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress, side sleepers should opt for a softer surface to avoid stress on the pressure points like your shoulders, hips and knees, and back sleepers (and anyone who changes positions) would fall somewhere in between at a medium firmness.
✔️ Body type: Heavy people need a firmer bed for support, while lightweight frames are better suited with a softer mattress. Take into account both your weight and sleep position when deciding on the right firmness level.
✔️ Back pain: If you suffer from lower or upper back pain, look for a pressure-relieving mattress with all foam or a hybrid of foam and coils. Medical experts also advise looking for medium firmness for a balance of cushioning and support.
✔️ Temperature: Hot sleepers or anyone dealing with night sweats would benefit from a mattress with cooling properties. Memory foam tends to sleep hot, so look for a mattress with coils for airflow or cooling technology like copper particles, gel or phase change technology that's added to the foam.
✔️ Trial period: It's difficult to know whether a mattress is a good fit without actually sleeping on it. Fortunately, most mattress companies offer an any-reason return period for at least 100 nights. Before you buy, check whether there are any hidden return fees and how you go about making the return to avoid any headaches later on.
✔️ Certifications: It's important to know the difference between the various emblems you see when you shop since they often get mistaken for meaning the mattress is natural or organic. Here's a breakdown of the most common certifications:
- CertiPUR-US: This certifies whether any foam in the mattress is made without certain harmful chemicals and has been tested for low VOC emissions.
- OEKO-TEX: The Standard 100 by Oeko-TEX shows whether any fabric (like the outer cover) has been tested to ensure there are no unsafe levels of known harmful chemicals.
- GOTS: The Global Organic Textile Standard shows that the mattress follows strict standards throughout the entire production process. This is the gold standard when it comes to picking out an organic mattress made of natural materials. Just be aware that this certification is commonly misused by brands who use just one organic component (e.g., an organic cotton outer cover), so you can always check the GOTS public database to be sure.
- GOLS: The Global Organic Latex Standard is similar to GOTS, but it shows that any latex is certified organic. You'll often see these two organic certifications used together.
