Healthy eating can be challenging, especially if you need to monitor your sodium intake, whether related to a medical condition or just something you want to cut back on (nine out of 10 Americans eat way too much salt). Even if you have the best intentions, there are often hidden sources of sodium that come from unexpected foods like condiments, beverages, and snack foods. A low-sodium meal delivery service can offer a convenient and nutritious solution that takes the guesswork out of meal preparation on a heart-healthy diet.

Not only do I lead meal delivery services testing for the Good Housekeeping Institute, but I'm also a registered dietitian and previously worked in a heart center hospital for several years. I'm very well versed in both low-sodium diets and meal delivery services, and I rounded up the best options that cater to a heart-healthy lifestyle while also providing convenience and quality. These services make low-sodium meals anything but boring, and something that you'll actually look forward to eating (which can increase your success on the diet, too).

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium daily, encouraging an ideal limit of 1,500 milligrams per day for most adults. A food can be considered low sodium if it has 140 milligrams of sodium or less per 100 gram serving. When it comes to a meal, aim for roughly 500 to 600 milligrams of sodium to stay within these limits. For this list, we prioritized services that offer lower-sodium dishes.

Best Overall

Trifecta

Trifecta

Pros

  • Meals developed by dietitians, chefs and doctors
  • Most meals range from 300–500 mg of sodium
  • Dishes are convenient and premade

Cons

  • Not as flavorful as other services

Type: Prepared meals | Cost: About $15/meal, plus $9.99 shipping fee | Availability: Nationwide

How it works: Curated for athletes, Trifecta is our top healthy meal delivery service, and you may have seen it featured on Netflix's You Are What You Eat. The organic service features high-quality ingredients like grass-fed meat and wild-caught seafood. You can choose from over 100 high-protein meals each week, and the service has five different meal plans, including Paleo & Whole 30, keto, plant-based, clean and GLP-1. Everything comes in vacuum-sealed containers and lasts up to seven days in the fridge (or three months in the freezer).

Nutrition: Trifecta meals are developed by a team of dietitians, chefs and doctors, and there is even a companion app that provides great tools if you're looking to lose body fat or gain muscle. On average, the brand says that dishes contain about 300 to 500 milligrams of sodium per meal (except keto meals, which are slightly higher). You can obtain full nutrition facts for each meal on their website before ordering. At press time, they have banned over 237 ingredients from their dishes, including preservatives, certain oils and artificial flavorings.

What testers said: I appreciate that the brand is dedicated to nutrition, helping customers meal plan with clear macronutrient breakdowns for each meal. Testers liked that the meals were not only healthy and convenient but also fresh-tasting. Plus, proteins are responsibly sourced, and the produce is organic. But since Trifecta focuses on healthier options, the food isn't as flavorful as other services we have tried. "The protein and vegetables were great. There was a well-planned balance of meats and other ingredients, and everything was fresh, easy and satisfying," one tester said. Another commented, "The convenience is nice, and the meals are healthy, which is a hard combination to get."

Pros

  • All meals are designed by dietitians
  • Heart Healthy plan available with low-sodium meals
  • Dishes are also calorie-conscious
  • Meals come already prepared and just need reheating

Cons

  • Food arrives frozen

Type: Prepared meals | Cost: $10.99 to $14.99 per meal, plus a $19.95 shipping fee | Availability: Delivery to the contiguous United States.

How it works: BistroMD was founded by a medical doctor and offers meal plans catered to weight loss, diabetes, heart health, menopause and more. They also have gluten-free, keto-flex and vegan programs. Meals are prepared fresh but then frozen before they are shipped to you.

Nutrition: Each BistroMD meal is designed by a dietitian to ensure it is nutritionally balanced and optimized, and most meals have 500 milligrams of sodium or less (and are also calorie-conscious). BistroMD specifically offers a Heart Healthy program with a robust menu. All meals on the Heart Healthy program have an average of 6 grams of fiber, 3.5 grams of saturated fat or less, 5 grams of added sugar or less, and 600 milligrams of sodium or less. Plus, they are cooked with mainly olive oil and prepared by chefs. Complete nutrition facts are available for each meal on their website when you order. Another standout is that the food is free from artificial ingredients, trans fats and refined sugars, and the service has a comprehensive banned ingredients list.

What testers said: If you're looking for a service that provides medically-tailored heart-healthy meals straight to your home, this is likely the best option out there. And if the Heart Healthy plan doesn't meet your specific needs, the service has a team of in-house registered dietitians who can create a custom diet program for you. I appreciate that BistroMD meals are not only balanced and satisfying but also science-backed.

Testers loved that the dishes required no prep work, which helped improve compliance with sticking to the diet. "The meals were very filling for an average of approximately 360 calories each. I loved how convenient they were," one tester said. "The salmon and BBQ beef meals were my favorite. I don't usually fix salmon, so it was nice to enjoy a convenient, healthy meal." Another noted the helpful weight loss tips and nutrition advice available on the brand's website. "Good quality of food, interesting variety and good taste. Plus, I actually lost weight."

Best Tasting

CookUnity

CookUnity
Credit: Cook Unity

Pros

  • Gourmet-style prepared meals
  • Meals come fresh, never frozen
  • On-staff registered dietitian
  • Sodium wise meals filter available

Cons

  • Limited availability in certain areas

Type: Prepared meals | Cost: Meals start at $11, plus $10 for shipping | Availability: Ships to over 90% of the continental U.S.

How it works: Prepared meals are anything but boring with CookUnity. Award-winning chefs create restaurant-quality meals that are delivered straight to your door. You'll find a rotating menu from some of the most talented chefs in the country, and you can select between four and 16 meals per week. Menus are posted two weeks in advance, and you can choose your weekly meals or let CookUnity select for you based on your preferences, including gluten-free, dairy-free, keto, paleo, vegan and more.

Nutrition: Restaurant meals are notorious for high sodium counts, but CookUnity has an on-staff registered dietitian who oversees the nutritional quality of the meals. Full nutrition facts on the meals are available once you create an account, so you can check sodium stats before you order. They offer a sodium-wise meal filter, which includes all meals with 700 milligrams of sodium or less. Based on our review of the offerings, most meals in this category contain roughly 400 to 680 milligrams of sodium. You'll find a decent variety, too, of about 10 to 25 lower-sodium meals per week to choose from, depending on where you live. You can also use the sliding filter to set your own limits for sodium on their site when selecting your meals.

What testers said: Meals were fresh and delicious, receiving top scores for flavor, portion size and overall food quality in our tests. We also like that the brand provides a full nutrition facts panel for each meal. One tester said, "The meals were simple to prepare and absolutely delicious," and all testers said they would recommend the service to a family member or friend. "I was so excited to get meals from one of my favorite chefs, Einat Admony! Balaboosta is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The meal made me feel like I was there," another person commented. The only downside is that the shipping area can be a bit limited, and menu selection isn't as robust in certain areas.

Best Plant-Based

Splendid Spoon

Splendid Spoon
Credit: Splendid Spoon

Pros

  • 100% plant-based and gluten-free
  • Dietitians help to make sure the meals are kept lower in sodium
  • Additional dietary filters to choose from

Cons

  • Meals come frozen and are on the lighter side

Type: Prepared meals | Cost: $10 to $13 per meal, plus a $12.99 shipping fee for orders under 10 items | Availability: Delivery to the contiguous United States.

How it works: This completely plant-based service offers a variety of nutritious smoothies, soups, meals and health shots. You can select how many meals you need – 6, 12 or 18 – and then choose whether you want it weekly, bi-monthly or monthly. They also offer a new 5-Day Detox program available as a one-time order, which includes 25 meals and five cold-pressed shots.

Nutrition: All Splendid Spoon's meals are vegan and free from gluten and artificial sweeteners. The service partners with a registered dietitian to keep the sodium content lower, and in our recent analysis of their website, we found that all entrées were under 800 milligrams of sodium, with most in the 500- to 700-milligram range. You can click on the meals when ordering to get a detailed description of ingredients and nutrition facts and filter for additional dietary needs like higher fiber, higher protein, lower calorie, lower fat and lower sugar.

What testers said: Although the food arrives frozen, testers noted you can still taste the freshness of each item. Even though the meals are plant-based, testers found them hearty and satisfying. "I am not a vegan/vegetarian, but I was very pleasantly surprised with the taste of the bowls and the fact that I did not miss having meat as a part of the meal," one person said. Just note that fare is on the lighter side, and some items, like the smoothies, have two servings per container, so look closely at the nutrition labels. "The smoothies were creative and tasty and contained things that I would never have thought to try. Same with the soups," said one tester. "My absolute favorites were the wellness shot, raspberry cacao smoothie and kimchi fried quinoa. This is also a great option for my husband, who leaves very early for work and often skips breakfast."

Best Meal Kit

Sunbasket

Sunbasket
Credit: Sunbasket

Pros

  • Most meals contain under 800 mg of sodium
  • Nutrition facts information available when ordering
  • High-quality ingredients and organic produce
  • Sustainable packaging materials

Cons

  • Not every option is low-sodium

Type: Standard meal kits and prepared meals | Cost: $9.99 per serving for prepared meals, $11.49–$25.99 per serving for meal kits + $11 shipping fee | Availability: Nationwide with some exceptions

How it works: Sunbasket pairs high-quality ingredients and sustainable packaging features for meals that you can feel good about enjoying. They offer standard meal kits with follow-along recipes, as well as semi-prepared options and completely premade dishes. It's one of my favorite healthy meal delivery services since it offers paleo, carb-conscious, gluten-free, keto-friendly, diabetes-friendly, Mediterranean, vegetarian and pescatarian plans.

Nutrition: Every meal is approved by the brand's dietitians and emphasizes nutrient-dense ingredients like high-quality proteins, healthy fats and whole grains. Everything is made with minimal added sugar and processed ingredients. I especially appreciate that Sunbasket's dietitians ensure that the meals typically contain under 800 calories and 800 milligrams of sodium but are still high in protein and fiber for a satiating, nutritious meal. Though 800 milligrams isn't considered low sodium for a typical meal, it is far lower than most restaurant or takeout dishes that can have upwards of 1,000 milligrams of sodium per serving. You can click on each meal in their menu when ordering to find the exact sodium number to ensure it fits your dietary needs.

What testers said: Testers enjoyed the unique, creative recipes, with everyone saying it encouraged them to try something new. "This meal kit had more interesting recipes and food choices than others I have tried," one tester said. Another said that the service took the guesswork out of meal planning and prepping thanks to the recipe's clear and easy instructions. "Good variety. Things I wouldn't make otherwise."

Best Convenient

Eat Clean Bro

Eat Clean Bro
Credit: Eat Clean Bro

Pros

  • Heart-healthy meal-plan available with reduced sodium meals
  • Now shipping nationwide
  • Meals are fully prepared and ready to heat

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Limited availability

Type: Prepared meals | Cost: Meals range from about $10–$20, with most around $14, shipping cost ranges depending on location | Availability: 29 states on the East Coast

How it works: Although at first glance you would think this service is just for the "gym bros," I find Eat Clean Bro a nice solution for any busy but health-conscious professional. The service doesn't require a subscription to order its nutritious meals. The chef-prepared dishes are made with quality ingredients and arrive fresh (never frozen) to your doorstep. The weekly menu is extensive, and you can choose meals by macro, diet and meal type.

Nutrition: Eat Clean Bro told Good Housekeeping that they offer a variety of meals that align with heart-healthy and low-sodium dietary preferences. According to the brand, dishes are made using whole foods and seasoned in-house, which helps maintain lower sodium levels compared to other highly processed foods. The heart-healthy meal plan, in particular, is plant-forward and high in fiber but lower in sodium and saturated fat.

What testers said: We tested Eat Clean Bro a few years ago, and at the time, the delivery area was limited and the meals were a bit salty. I recently tried some updated offerings that were good quality and more flavorful than what I remember trying from them in the past. I found the meals quite filling, and the service now ships to 29 states along the East Coast (they also offer local hand delivery if you live near one of their facilities). The convenience of being totally premade is a plus, but as with any prepared meal delivery service, the dishes tend to skew on the expensive side. We plan to do a larger test with their updated meals soon and will report back.

  • Meal kits and premade meals both available
  • Variety of low-sodium meals available each week

Cons

  • Expensive

Type: Standard meal kits and prepared meals | Cost: $11–$13 per serving + $12 shipping fee | Availability: Nationwide

This service is specifically dedicated to an entirely vegan menu and includes interesting, globally-inspired dishes that are fun and exciting. They offer your standard meal kit with follow-along recipes, as well as fully prepared meals. But for a kit that does not include meat, it's definitely on the pricier side.

  • Meals are fresh and flavorful
  • Low-sodium meal filter available when selecting your dishes

Cons

It's specifically designed for people with GI disorders (think irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's, colitis, celiac and SIBO). Meals come fully prepared, which makes sticking to a complicated low-FODMAP diet much easier (though this comes at a premium in terms of cost). How we test meal delivery services

testing meal delivery services in the good housekeeping institute
mike garten

Our food and nutrition experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute test and review all different types of food products and services, including food subscription boxes and meal delivery services. We have evaluated over 50 meal delivery services, looking at website navigation, robust menu variety, ample dietary accommodations, simple instruction cards, accurate cooking times, delicious and inventive recipes, and more. We also assess ingredient quality upon arrival, whether or not the kit has everything you need to create the provided recipe, as well as safe and sustainable packaging. Other major factors are cost and delivery ranges, which we strongly consider in our tests.

In addition to expert evaluation, we recruited over 300 at-home testers nationwide. Testers comment on how easy the kits were to follow, their thoughts on the variety and quality of recipes, the condition of the food upon arrival, packaging and more. For low-sodium meal delivery services specifically, we highlighted services that cater to both low- and lower-sodium fare but also offer flexibility for other dietary restrictions on top of that. We prioritized services that use fresh and minimally processed ingredients with quality recipes that taste great even without excess salt.

What to look for when selecting a low-sodium meal delivery service

testing out splendid spoon meal delivery service for good housekeeping
mike garten

There seems to be a new meal delivery service debuting every single week! The options can be overwhelming, and finding ones catering to low-sodium diets can be tough. Here are some things to look for

✔️ Type: Do you prefer a traditional meal kit with follow-along recipes, or would you rather try something that is premade and doesn't require cooking or dirty dishes? There are also services in-between that offer semi-prepared meals to give you the best of both worlds.

✔️ Low-sodium filters: According to the FDA, a food is considered low-sodium if it contains 140 milligrams of sodium or less per 100-gram serving. Services that have a low-sodium label on their meals should adhere to this. That means if the meal is a 400-gram serving size, it should have 560 milligrams of sodium or less per serving. However, some services offer reduced or lower sodium options that may not meet this specific number but are still significantly lower than meals you would get via takeout or at a restaurant (some restaurant meals can contain upwards of 1,000 milligrams of sodium). It's important to see if the service will provide a full nutrition facts panel on the website so you can know exactly what you are ordering.

✔️ Cost: Finding a meal delivery service within your budget is key and should factor into your weekly grocery budget. Many brands also offer discounts when you sign up, as well as if you refer a friend. Typically, you can take advantage of better pricing if you order more meals.

✔️ Delivery range: Make sure the service ships to your area, and consider any associated shipping fees that factor into your budget. Some services offer complimentary shipping if your order is over a specific amount.

✔️ Sustainability: Finding a balance between keeping food safe and incorporating sustainable features into meal delivery service packaging can be tricky. However, we've noticed that many of the leading meal delivery service brands are finding innovative ways to focus on sustainability while ensuring good shipping quality. Almost every service will have specific instructions on their website on how to recycle or dispose of all of the items in the box.

How much sodium should I consume daily?

linebreak

For most adults, the AHA recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, equivalent to about one teaspoon of salt. But the ideal limit is 1,500 milligrams per day, especially for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease or diabetes.

How do I reduce sodium intake without sacrificing flavor?

linebreak

Low-sodium meals don't have to be flavorless. It's entirely possible to reduce sodium intake while maintaining great flavor. Experiment with both fresh and dried herbs, spices and salt-free seasoning blends. Acidic ingredients, like lemon juice, lime juice and vinegar can be a great way to brighten the taste in different recipes. Choosing high-quality ingredients like fresh produce and proteins can also help impart more flavor without adding excess salt. Try gradually reducing your salt in recipes to slowly retrain your taste buds.

Do these services accommodate other dietary restrictions or food allergies?

cookunity chicken grain bowl meal delivery services testing at the good housekeeping institute
Philip Friedman

Many meal delivery services offer multiple filters when selecting your meals, so you can search for low-sodium meals that are also gluten-free, vegan, diabetes-friendly, etc. The only issue we've found in our tests is that multiple dietary filters can significantly decrease the variety and offerings on the menu for certain services. We highlighted options that offered a nice selection of low-sodium meals per week that also meet different dietary preferences, like Purple Carrot for vegans and Epicured for gluten-free diets. Browse the menus online to see if the offerings appeal to you before committing to a subscription.

How do these services ensure the meals meet low-sodium guidelines?

purple carrot meal delivery service testing in sassos' home
Stefani Sassos

You'll notice that many of the services we highlighted above collaborate with registered dietitians to design low-sodium recipes that meet the dietary guidelines (or a range the service has set for lower-sodium fare). These recipes will often have flavors enhanced with herbs, spices and salt-free seasonings to compensate for the reduced sodium. Each dish should be labeled with detailed nutrition information, but ultimately, it's on the brand to do their due diligence. You can always contact the brand's customer service directly to ask specific questions about their low-sodium meals and nutrition analysis processes.
