There’s no better way to usher in a happy, healthy new year than with a gathering of family and friends — and some delicious Rosh Hashanah recipes.

Traditional Rosh Hashanah foods include sweet fruits like raisins, apples and pomegranates (the numerous seeds of this fruit are said to connect to the many commandments of the Torah) and savory proteins like roast chicken or brisket. Side dishes like noodle kugel are a must, as are apples dipped in honey to symbolize a sweet New Year or round loaves of homemade challah to represent the unending cycle of life. Recipes that incorporate these traditional ingredients are also fair game, like apple-based desserts and dried fruit-studded meats or veggies.

The holiday takes place at the beginning of the month of Tishrei, which falls on the evening of Wednesday, October 2 this year. Because of the season, autumnal fare like butternut squash, carrots (which symbolize the desire for increased prosperity in the new year) and potato recipes are also welcome on a Rosh Hashanah table.

Find all of those recipes and more in this roundup of celebratory ideas. And if you’re looking to spoil your loved ones with some Rosh Hashanah gifts, we’ve got you covered. Here's to a great year ahead!
