My parents' love story began at a flower shop, where my mom worked as a florist and my dad, in search of a part-time job, started hand-delivering flowers for that same shop. I was born a few years later and spent my early childhood visiting that very flower shop. I vividly remember hanging out in the refreshing walk-in refrigerator where they stored the flowers or wandering around the shop, mesmerized by the unique blooms and breathtaking arrangements crafted by my mom and her peers.

I've been deeply passionate about flowers for as long as I can remember. When I joined the Good Housekeeping Institute over three and a half years ago, I eagerly volunteered to lead the testing of online flower delivery services, even though it was slightly out of my job scope. In that time, I've tested 19 different online flower delivery services, something a flower enthusiast could only dream of. And one of the flower delivery services that genuinely impressed me and my mother (a florist and very good flower delivery tester) was Farmgirl Flowers.

Farmgirl Flowers was founded by real-life farmgirl Christina Stembel, who was born and raised on a corn and soybean farm in Indiana. Stembel started Farmgirl Flowers from her small San Francisco apartment in November 2010 with her life savings of $49,000. The brand differentiates itself in the crowded flower delivery market for its sustainable practices, such as shipping its bouquets in upcycled and compostable burlap wrapping and offering a daily bouquet model that minimizes waste by not guaranteeing flower varieties or colors but ensuring high-quality stems.

While many services import all of their florals from countries like the Netherlands, Colombia and Ecuador — Farmgirl imports flowers but also sources some of their blooms from the United States, like lily of the valley from Oregon, sunflowers or lilacs from California. They also sell unique varietals of flowers like roselilies or specialty garden roses. And if you prefer to send a bouquet in a vase, they offer chic vases that, trust me, you will want to keep. They also sell wreaths with beautiful greenery or house plants if your loved one doesn't fancy flowers. Fun add-ons like wildflower seed mix, candles, tea, sweets or bath bombs are also available.

How much are Farmgirl Flowers and where do they ship?

Arrangements at Farmgirl Flowers range from $55 to upwards of $500, with many retailing around $100 on average. Our tests found shipping rates to be around $25, but they vary based on time of year or where you're located. However, if you don't want to pay for shipping, they have multiple offerings that ship free. Their website is straightforward and helpful to navigate, with pages dedicated to their under $100 and under $70 arrangements. They currently ship to the lower 48 contiguous United States (sorry, Hawaii and Alaska, but they say they're working on it).

Since Mother's Day is around the corner Farmgirl Flowers gave us a special discount code to share with our readers: GOODHOUSEKEEPING. This code gives you 20% off your order through the end of June and can be used across the Farmgirl website, but cannot be combined with other discounts or the free ship shop.

How we test the best online flower delivery services

We've tested 19 online flower and plant delivery services in the Good Housekeeping Institute since 2022. During that time, we evaluated 57 arrangements, enlisted 38 consumer testers and received surveys from 475 GH+ members nationwide for their valuable insight into flower delivery services.

We put bouquets through rigorous in-Lab testing and at-home consumer testing, judging each service on a list of criteria that includes delivery time, initial appearance and longevity. During Lab testing, for each service, we place an order for pink roses in a clear glass vase (if available), while at-home consumer testers can select any arrangement they prefer.

Farmgirl Flowers testing results

In Lab testing, Farmgirl Flowers' pink roses arrived a little bruised, but after a few days of opening, they were absolutely stunning and smelled sweeter than any other arrangement I tested. The roses were packaged nicely and came with detailed instructions, though they did have a lot of thorns, so I had to be careful as I unboxed them. After a week of testing, the blooms had withered but still looked pretty.

One consumer tester said: "The flowers were quick to arrive, less than 12 hours after ordering. The packaging was well thought out and effective in protecting the tender blooms and the instructions were clear. Plus, the roses were drop-dead gorgeous!" Another tester said: "Was really pleased with the delivery. It came in a beautiful burlap wrapping, and while it didn't feel as swoon-worthy as some other packages, I really appreciated the aesthetic and detail and felt good to be doing something that felt more sustainable."

Over the years, I've also had the pleasure of receiving Farmgirl Flowers from many loved ones. After enjoying nearly a dozen of their arrangements, I can confidently say I've had overwhelmingly positive experiences. On one occasion when I wasn't satisfied, their customer service swiftly stepped in, sending me a replacement bouquet that was even bigger and better than the original. Receiving a Farmgirl Flowers delivery has always felt special — an exciting surprise as I uncovered each bouquet's beautiful, unique blooms.

How do you take care of Farmgirl Flowers?

These are my tips for taking care of your Farmgirl Flowers (or any online flower delivery) once they arrive at your doorstep.

    • Cut at least 2 inches off your flower stems at a 45-degree angle using clean garden shears or sharp scissors.
    • Remove any dead leaves or petals from the arrangement.
    • Use a clean, sterilized vase (a clear vase is ideal so you can monitor your water).
    • Fill the vase with crystal-clear, very cold water and a few ice cubes to perk up your flowers after a long journey in the mail.
    • Use the provided flower food to provide nutrients, regulate water pH and prevent bacteria growth.
    • Repeat these steps every 2–3 days to prolong the life of your arrangement.

Who is Farmgirl Flowers for?

Farmgirl Flowers is for anyone who wants to treat themselves or give a special gift. It's a bit of a splurge compared to other online flower delivery services, but I think it's worth it if you want to send an arrangement that's truly unique, beautiful and seasonal. However, if you're looking for arrangements at slightly lower price points, I also recommend The Bouqs Co. and 1-800-Flowers, which both tested well in my Lab testing.
