Getting clean, fresh-smelling laundry with every cycle involves using the best washing machines and clothes dryers, hard-working detergents and effective stain removers. Extra laundry additives, like fabric softeners, are the icing on the cake as they condition and leave clean clothing and household items smooth, soft and static-free. While they may not be essential in every cycle, there are times when adding a dose of liquid softener or tossing in a dryer sheet is just what your load needs.

In the Good Housekeeping Home Care & Cleaning Lab, we're laundry experts, testing both the appliances and the products you use with them to get clothing stain-free and smelling fresh. For fabric softeners, both sheets and liquids, we assess not only how much softness they impart to our test towels, but also if they build up over time, reduce absorbency or discolor fabrics in any way. We evaluate how well they reduce static cling, impart a lasting scent and more. Based on our testing, these are the top liquid and dryer sheet fabric softeners we recommend.

Best Overall

Procter & Gamble Downy Ultra Liquid Fabric Conditioner

GH Seal
Downy Ultra Liquid Fabric Conditioner

Pros

  • Iconic, long-lasting scent
  • Protects clothing fabrics from stretching and fuzzing
  • Imparts more softness than others

Cons

  • Scent may be strong for some
  • A bit more expensive than others

The gold standard of fabric softeners, Ultra Downy is a long time Good Housekeeping Seal Star for good reason. It always imparts the most noticeable softness in our tests. Its recognizable and long-lasting floral scent is one that most testers love, though it may be a bit strong for anyone sensitive to fragrances. Downy was the first brand to coin the term fabric "conditioner" as it also protects clothing from stretching, fading and fuzz, ultimately adding to the longevity of your favorite items.

While April Fresh is Ultra Downy's most iconic scent and can also be found in dryer sheets and scent beads, there are other Ultra Downy liquid versions available that provide extra softening benefits and luxurious scents, like lavender, vanilla bean, eucalyptus and cedarwood.

Best for Sensitive Skin

Downy Free & Gentle Fabric Softener

Free & Gentle Fabric Softener

Pros

  • Fragrance-free and dye-free
  • Good value
  • Recognized by skin care professionals

Cons

  • Doesn't come as dryer sheets

One of the first things dermatologists often recommend for patients with sensitive skin is to eliminate the use of fabric softener. But for babies or anyone irritated by dyes and fragrances, Downy makes a Free and Gentle liquid version of its beloved fabric softener (though not dryer sheets). And softer fabrics are more soothing on sensitive skin. It's dye-free and perfume-free and also carries our Good Housekeeping Seal.

Our Lab tests consistently show that no fabric softener leaves clothes as soft as Downy, and that's true for the Free and Gentle formula as well. Plus, it's dermatologist-tested and recognized by the National Eczema Association and the National Psoriasis Foundation. And a little goes a long way — all you need is a small capful so it's also a great value.

Best Sheets

Bounce Dryer Sheets

Dryer Sheets
Credit: Mike Garten

Pros

  • Convenient and mess-free
  • Very effective on static
  • Comes in a version that removes pet hair from fabrics

Cons

  • Good for only one use

Dryer sheets work their magic when heat from the dryer transfers the softening and static-zapping ingredients from the sheet to your wet load. And in GH tests, Bounce does it best. Our towels were lightly softened and scented and the socks we tumbled with other synthetic materials emerged cling-free and ready to pair up without having to peel them off other items.

Bounce is perfect for those who want a bit of softening, some scent and static control, but it can also be used in conjunction with a liquid softener for maximum benefits. Bounce is available in several scents, unscented and even in oversized sheets for three times the benefits along with a version that helps remove pet hair clinging to fabrics which we've tested and found worked well.

Though these single-use sheets are disposable and are usually tossed after every use, you can't beat them for convenience. There's no heavy bottle to lug around — great for anyone who heads to the laundromat to do their wash — and no messy drips, spills or gunky dispenser residue to scrub away.

Best Plant-Based Sheets

Beyond Natural Dryer Sheets

Natural Dryer Sheets

Pros

  • Made with plant-based ingredients and essential oils
  • Fresh scent isn't overpowering
  • No greenwashing claims on the package

Cons

  • More expensive than other sheets
  • Comes in only one scent

We were pleasantly surprised when we tested Beyond dryer sheets for a previous Good Housekeeping Best Cleaning & Organizing Award program for a number of reasons. These sheets are a 99% USDA Certified Biobased Product, which means that not only are Beyond's softening ingredients derived from plant-based materials, but the non-woven sheet is made from renewable fibers as well. In addition, the fragrance is made with essential oils and the product is responsibly packaged and labeled, without any exaggerated environmental claims.

Though Beyond is a bit more expensive per use than other sheets and available in only one scent, both our Lab experts and consumers were impressed by its performance. We noted ample softening and static control without any waxy residue. “I liked the long-lasting, natural scent," a tester told us. "It leaves clothes smelling very clean and fresh, but without the perfume-y smell that I am so accustomed to with typical dryer sheets.”

Best Plant-Based Liquid

ENSUEÑO Max Liquid Fabric Softener

Max Liquid Fabric Softener

Pros

  • Long-lasting smell
  • No waxy residue
  • Biodegradable formula and 80% recycled plastic bottle

Cons

  • May be easy to overdose

Liquid softeners get a bad rap because they can leave fabrics feeling waxy and coated, especially when used too often or too generously. This was not the case with Ensueño Max. In our tests, this plant-based formula — a previous winner of a Good Housekeeping Best Cleaning & Organizing Award — softened without leaving items feeling slippery. And one tester praised the product for how well it reduced static.

Those who like a long-lasting scent should take note. Ensueño Max uses essential oils in its formula and, like other brands that emit fragrance over time, contains micro-capsules that release scent as clothing items are touched and worn. And we like that the formula is biodegradable and the bottle is made with 80% recycled plastic.

Some noted that the product is very thick — although we didn't find so in our testing — but it is concentrated, so make sure to follow package dosing instructions carefully to avoid using too much.

Best Fabric Rinse

Downy Rinse & Refresh

GH Seal
Rinse & Refresh
Credit: Mike Garten

Pros

  • Great scent
  • Safe for use on all fabrics
  • Removes old build-up and restores softness
  • Comes in Free & Gentle version

Cons

  • Not a true fabric softener
  • More expensive than traditional softener

Though technically not a traditional fabric softener, Downy Rinse & Refresh gets added to your washer's fabric softener compartment and dispensed into the rinse cycle like a traditional conditioner. The difference: It contains citric acid to rinse away trapped odors and hard water, detergent and other build-up to make stiff, smelly items, like towels, fresh and soft again. It's safe on all fabrics — even those you can't typically use fabric softener on, like athletic wear, microfiber and flame-resistant clothing and won't lessen absorbency.

In our tests, Downy Rinse & Refresh — a Good Housekeeping Seal Star — impressively softened up old, stiff washcloths and it helps keep newer items residue-free, so there's no need for a separate "laundry stripping" step.

The manufacturer recently made the product more concentrated so some versions now tout three times the odor-eliminating power of detergent. The slightly floral, fresh scent it leaves behind is praised by users as "amazing," though there is a Free & Gentle formula for those who prefer it.

Best for Workout Wear

HEX Performance Fabric Conditioner

Fabric Conditioner
Credit: HEX Performance

Pros

  • Safe for all fabrics
  • Softens and removes odors
  • Maintains wicking ability of fabrics

Cons

  • Scent is not particularly long-lasting

HEX Performance is a brand designed around caring for athletic wear and in our Cleaning Lab experience, its detergent works very well in cleaning and removing odors from workout fabrics. And while it's not recommended to use fabric softener on items like microfiber and workout apparel, this formula is an exception to the rule. It's specially designed to be thinner than other fabric conditioners to penetrate tightly knit fabrics, rinse out odors, prevent buildup, and maintain absorbency and moisture-wicking properties.

Though the Fresh & Clean formula does have a subtle scent, it's made with sensitive skin in mind — without heavy fragrances or irritants — so the scent may not be long-lasting enough for some. But for those who prefer, there is a fragrance-free version as well.

How we test fabric softeners

double line break

In the GH Cleaning Lab, we test fabric softeners — both liquids and dryer sheets — for the amount of softness and scent they impart and any discoloration or negative effects they leave behind on our white test towels after multiple washes. Liquids are added to the washer dispenser per the label directions and dryer sheets are placed atop the wet load before drying.

For each softener tested, a towel is removed from the load after one wash and a panel of testers feel and rate it for softness and scent. This same load is washed four more times with softener added to either the washer or dryer and then a second towel is removed and rated. After five more washes — for a total of 10 — a third and final towel is removed and rated.

We also assess and note any yellowing or waxy feel the test towels may exhibit after washing, the size of dryer sheets, cost per use, quality of the packaging, any impact on absorbency and any reduction in static during drying. Finally, the labeling of each softener is reviewed for accuracy, thoroughness and necessary safety statements. Documentation to support any environmental claims is also requested and reviewed.

What to look for when shopping for fabric softener

double line break

While most fabric softeners can be used to smooth wrinkles, reduce static and impart fresh scent on any number of laundry items, there are still a few things to consider when choosing the best fabric softener for your home:

✔️ Type: Liquid and sheets are the two main types of fabric softener, and your choice is largely dependent on preference. Liquid fabric softeners, which are typically added to the rinse cycle of the wash, tend to be more potent conditioners than sheets. Sheets provide light softening, as well as static control to help prevent items from clinging together in the dryer or attracting hair or lint. Liquids also condition fibers to help reduce wrinkling, stretching and fading.

✔️ Machine compatibility: Just as you would with any laundry detergent you're considering, make sure to read package instructions to ensure the product is safe to use with your appliance. If you have a high-efficiency (HE) washer, make sure any liquid fabric softener is also labeled as such. And never use more than is indicated in usage guidelines, since this can lead to unnecessary buildup on clothes and inside the machine. Remove and clean your machine’s fabric softener dispenser regularly to scrub away any residue that may build up there too.

✔️ Scent: Some fabric softeners have a very potent and long-lasting scent. While some users may like this, those with babies, skin sensitivities or allergies should seek out formulas that don't contain harsh fragrances and dyes.

Do you really need to use fabric softener?

double line break

As far as laundry products go, fabric softener is fairly polarizing — some swear by it, while others never touch the stuff. The choice is really up to you. While fabric softener does serve a purpose, it's not a necessary step in the process.

Think of fabric softener as conditioner for your clothes. It penetrates and coats the fiber to smooth them out and better align them, so fabrics feel softer. It also makes fibers more pliable and less prone to creasing, which helps reduce static and wrinkles. The long-lasting scent it imparts is a nice bonus.

There are, however, some instances when you're better off skipping fabric softener altogether — in the case of microfiber cloths and athletic wear, for example. Because it coats fibers, it can impact absorbency and wicking properties. It can also impact the flame resistance of certain fabrics, so it’s not recommended for children’s sleepwear or fleece clothing items, either.

Are dryer balls better than dryer sheets?

double line break

High-quality wool dryer balls are an easy and reusable option that helps keep clothes tumbling so they dry more evenly and emerge fluffy. They are a must when drying items like pillows, comforters, sleeping bags and puffy coats and jackets to help preserve the loft and insulation ability of the fillings.

While they eliminate the single-use waste and added chemicals associated with traditional dryer sheets, dryer balls don't have the same fabric-softening capabilities as traditional softeners so garments will not come out of the dryer with any added softness. Dryer balls do fluff up garments — which makes them feel softer — and can help zap some static, but don't expect the same level of performance that traditional softeners provide.

To add a touch of scent, try placing a few drops of a favorite essential oil onto the wool balls before tossing them into the dryer.
