Q. I’d like to be more considered about my fashion choices but I'm always very drawn to the New In sections at this time of year and often buy things on a whim I don’t end up wearing. Can you help me hone down the worthwhile wardrobe updates I could make for spring, and I’d love your take on the trends too! Jodie, 55

A. I hear you. The New In section is a siren call, and we’ve all fallen for it. But impulse buys often lead to unworn clothes, wasted money, and, ultimately, if you buy cheap polyester pieces, landfill. So, before clicking buy now, pause. Instead, audit your wardrobe—what do you actually need? More often than not, the piece you’re craving is already there.

That said, fashion is about joy, and a well-chosen update in biodegradable natural fibres such as cotton, linen, silk, viscose, Lyocell or Tencel, can be happiness-making and endlessly useful. The key? Knowing which trends have longevity and what singular piece will bring your wardrobe effortlessly into S/S 25.

And that, Jodie, is exactly what I’m here for. P.S We’ve already covered striped preppy shirts, and slim-leg jeans, so this is my pick of the rest.

The trend: Modern Sporty

The one spring buy: A fit-and-flare midi dress with contrast stitching

Luxe sporty minimalism is having a moment, with a side order of preppy polish and a hint of 70s nostalgia. This fit-and-flare midi dress is the best way into it. Preppy, polished, and so flattering—for me, it’s the one-and-done everyday dress of the season. Head to Boden, ME+EM and Mint Velvet for the best on the high street.

The one spring buy: A ruffle blouse

The dreamy, bohemian look is a key mood for spring. Wearing it involves considering sheer fabrics, lace, handcrafted detailing, and natural sun-bleached colours such as faded rose pink, apricot and cream, accessorised with dark brown leather accessories. One thing will take you there: a romantic boho blouse. & Other Stories, Next and Zara are all doing this trend.
