A spotless bathroom is something that we all strive for and keeping your shower screen clean and clear is one of the biggest challenges. This is particularly difficult when you live in a hard water area.
To help you remove limescale from your shower screen and get your bathroom sparkling, we asked the experts at the GHI for their top advice — here’s what you need to know.
Quick mix limescale blitz
You may think you need to buy a trolley full of chemical cleaners to get rid of limescale, but there’s a cheaper and more sustainable way. Distilled white vinegar is brilliant for putting the sparkle back — make sure you use distilled white vinegar, as the brown malt stuff you stick on your chips will make your bathroom smell like a chip shop!
You can either buy a pre-made vinegar solution or just as easily make your own. Get an old spray bottle and mix up a solution with half water, half vinegar and spray on to your shower screen.
Depending on how bad the problem is, you may need to use the rougher side of a non-scratch scouring pad with a dollop of elbow grease, before wiping it off and buffing it up with a dry cloth.

PREVENT LIMESCALE WITH THESE HACKS
Which ready-made product is best at removing limescale?
There are plenty of potions on the supermarket shelves promising to tackle limescale, but these often contain chemicals, so open the windows wide and put on pair of rubber gloves before you use them.
Cif Power & Shine Bathroom Spray can be sprayed on and wiped off within seconds. However, unless you’ve got minimal limescale, you’ll probably need to ‘rub’ rather than ‘wipe’.
Another great product is Viakal Limescale remover; the GHI cleaning experts suggest rubbing hard after using it to get a good shine.
Prevention is better than cure!
Get into the habit of using a squeegee to wipe the screen after every shower. Lakeland does a wide range, and the Oxo Good Grips Wiper Blade is a good one. Work your way from top to bottom; don’t worry about water trickling onto the floor because it will only end up down the drain anyway. But, do go over the residual water with a dry towel to limit limescale. In fact, you should be wiping out the entire shower between uses to prevent mould and limescale.
If you don’t have a squeegee, you can alternatively try out a window vacuum instead; then you won’t have so much to dry by towel afterwards. Do leave the shower door and windows open once you’re finished to vent any residual moisture. Do not hang damp towels to dry over the glass door as this encourages specks of limescale.
Get into the habit of using a daily shower spray to prevent limescale formation, such as Mr Muscle Platinum Shower Shine Spray. With products such as these, you usually don’t even have to wipe out the shower.
