To mark 20 years since Princess Diana’s death, her make-up artist, Mary Greenwell, has appeared on Lisa Eldridge’s YouTube channel, where she recreated one of the Princess’ Royal looks.

Throughout the video, Mary shared brilliant anecdotes from her three years working with Diana – and they reaffirm just how amazing the Princess was.

Speaking to Lisa, Mary says, ‘The first time I met Princess Diana was during the Vogue shoot.

‘We weren’t told who would be coming into the studio. So I was with the famous [hairdresser] Sam McKnight and [Diana] came in.

‘She was so natural and so lovely and so charming. We had such a lovely day.’

And it seems the Princess wasn’t one to shy away from taking risks with her look.

Diana sat in Sam’s chair and let him cut her hair in whichever way he thought would suit her best.

‘She then sat down in front of me,’ explains Mary, ‘I asked her “How are you feeling? What do you want your make-up to be?” and she said “Whatever you want – just make me look fresh and new. Do something different on me.”

‘And that’s when I started to change her look – and had the privilege and joy to work with her.’

In fact, the pair had so much fun working together over the years that Princess Diana frequently called Mary to talk about her love of make-up.

‘She used to call me up and say, “Can you come over and see me?” I remember she called my house one time and my friend picked up,’ says Mary.

‘When I came back an hour later, she said, “Oh my goodness, you’ve just had a call from Princess Diana.” She was so touched that she actually spoke to her.’

But one thing that really stood out for Mary was how humble the Princess was.

‘It was lovely with Princess Diana because she was so relaxed and easy. There were the kids running around – it was just a very relaxing time.’

She added, ‘I remember sitting at her table for lunch in Kensington Palace. It was a table of about 12 of us and she was so kind.

‘She would always say, “Come and join us for lunch,” whenever I was around her place!’

Mary continued, ‘We sat down and I can’t tell you how interesting it was; when she spoke, it was just jaw-dropping.

‘She had this wonderful appeal and everyone love her. She was such a good woman.’
