The refreshing elderflower and mint cocktail is one of our favourite tipples to enjoy in the sunshine.
The warm weather makes us want to get outside immediately with a big spritz in our hands and our ultimate go-to summer cocktail is the Hugo spritz recipe. It's just the drink to cool you down this summer.
A Hugo spritz (if you've not heard of it before) is an aperitif-based cocktail originating from the Austrian-Italian mountain region and originally used lemon balm in the recipe, but was quickly substituted with elderflower as a more easily available ingredient.
What is a Hugo Spritz made of?
Typically, a Hugo spritz is made up of an elderflower liqueur (or cordial), sparkling wine (typically Prosecco), soda water and fresh mint leaves, bruised to reveal the herbaceous flavour. It's typically garnished with a sprig of mint and a wedge of lime, too.
What is the difference between a Hugo and Aperol Spritz?
A Hugo spritz is made with an elderflower aperitif liqueur (or cordial), whereas an Aperol spritz is made with the bitter-orange aperitif. Both spritzes follow a similar recipe makeup of aperitif, sparkling wine and soda water.
How to make a Hugo Spritz at home?
Make sure you have a big wine glass ready and plenty of ice to get the ratio right. The floral aromas of the elderflower liqueur are enhanced when served in a wider wine glass. A cocktail stirrer is also handy too, but you can just use a long spoon if you don't have one.
