Investing in a professional-style gas range or high-end stove can transform your kitchen into a chef’s playground. These luxury appliances cost a pretty penny but may be worth it for serious home cooks who value power, precision and durability.

“What sets pro-style ranges apart from standard stoves is their robust build, luxury design, higher heat output and high-tech features like dual-fuel capabilities, convection ovens and even sous vide technology,” says Eva Bleyer, reviews analyst and range tester in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab. “These brands often cater to consumers working with interior designers, providing customization options to match a kitchen's aesthetic.”

Whether whipping up gourmet meals for a large family or experimenting with professional-level techniques, these ranges can deliver exceptional results comparable to those used in professional kitchens. However, luxury ranges don’t always guarantee top performance, says Bleyer.

To help you get your money’s worth, the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab has extensively tested almost 100 ranges in the last two decades, including induction cooktops, electric ranges, induction stoves and gas ranges. Here are our top picks.

Best Overall

Viking 5 Series 36-Inch Dual Fuel Range

5 Series 36-Inch Dual Fuel Range

Type: Dual-fuel range | Size: 36 in. | Oven capacity: 5.6 cu. ft. | Number of burners: Six | Cooktop maximum BTUs: One burner 18,500; five burners 15,000

Viking has long been synonymous with professional-grade appliances, and the brand's 5 Series range lives up to its reputation. The 36-inch dual fuel range offers precision simmering and high-output cooking, perfect for multitasking. It's a professional gas range designed with simplicity and durability in mind.

“Viking ranges are excellent pro-ranges, but they don’t offer features like a control panel or timer that you might expect from other high-end ranges like Miele or Fisher & Paykel,” says Bleyer. “This model resembles a range a chef would use in their restaurant without the bells, whistles and assisted cooking tools that consumers might be familiar with.”

Its illuminated knobs and clear, contrasting labels enhance usability, making it easy to adjust settings even in dim lighting. The individual burner grates are practical, allowing for easier cleaning than continuous grates.

Performance-wise, the range delivers quality results, excelling in tasks like toasting bread evenly. However, it falters slightly with multiple baking trays, showing uneven heat distribution that can result in some underbaked cookies and some perfectly done cookies.

Its self-clean function is a highlight, effectively removing buildup and leaving minimal residue for post-cleaning maintenance. While it would benefit from alerts for reaching the correct temperature or completing self-cleaning cycles, the range offers solid performance and a straightforward, user-friendly design for those who value reliability over flashy features.

Best Value

BlueStar 30-Inch Freestanding Gas Range

30-Inch Freestanding Gas Range

Type: Gas range | Size: 30 in. | Oven capacity: 4.6 cu. ft. | Number of burners: Four | Cooktop maximum BTUs: Two burners 22,000; one burner 15,000; one burner 9,000

The BlueStar Nova Series is a standout choice for home chefs seeking professional-grade performance and unparalleled customization at half the price of many professional-style ranges.

Its open burner system delivers impressive heat output, providing up to 22,000 BTUs of cooking power, ensuring rapid boiling and commercial-level searing. It bested all others in our cooktop tests.

The precise 130°F simmer burner is perfect for gently cooking delicate dishes. While a lack of self-cleaning functionality in the oven and the burners’ open design require more effort to clean, the removable parts on the stovetop make cleanup manageable.

The extra-large convection oven with a 1,850°F infrared broiler is great for ambitious baking and roasting, even accommodating full-size commercial baking sheets.

BlueStar truly shines in customization, with over 1,000 colors and finishes available to transform the range into a unique kitchen centerpiece. You can further personalize the setup with integrated options like a wok grate, griddle, charbroiler or French top.

Best for Modern Kitchens

Miele 30-Inch Induction Range

Type: Electric range | Size: 30 in. | Oven capacity: 4.6 cu. ft. | Number of burners: Six | Cooktop maximum BTUs: N/A

Miele ranges boast sleek aesthetics, making them a favorite for contemporary kitchens. Innovative features cater to convenience and precision.

This range's standout feature is its flip-out control panel, which enhances usability and visibility, making it easier to operate. An ergonomic swiveling oven handle moves easily with your wrist and body to open and close the door comfortably.

When put to the test in our Lab, the oven displayed impressive temperature accuracy, maintaining consistent heat with only minor deviations from the thermometer readings. The oven heated efficiently, reaching 375°F in approximately 14 minutes. However, in a cookie test, we found the bottom rack produced cookies that were too soft and gooey, while the top rack delivered better browning but some undercooked areas. Similarly, the cake test revealed inconsistent texture and browning.

The cooktop performed better, earning a top score in boiling. It got six quarts of water to a rolling boil in 19 minutes.

4
Most Versatile

Fisher & Paykel 36-Inch Freestanding Induction Smart Range

Type: Electric range | Size: 36 in. | Oven capacity: 4.8 cu. ft. | Number of burners: Five | Cooktop maximum BTUs: N/A

This Fisher & Paykel range is designed for versatility and modern cooking convenience. Its induction cooktop features four standard burners positioned around a large, double-ringed center burner, offering flexibility for various pot and pan sizes. Burners can also be paired to create larger cook zones.

This range earned the top score in our boiling water test. It also simmered water at a consistent temperature. The oven has good oven heat distribution and a great broiling function — especially with steak. Our testers found the oven easy to clean too.

A sleek, retractable touchscreen offers 15 innovative oven cooking modes. Users can follow step-by-step recipes, cook by ingredient or choose from specialized functions like pizza bake, pastry bake, air fry, slow cook, rapid proof and dehydrate. The integrated food probe adds precision when cooking large proteins, ensuring perfect results.

Safety and usability are also well-considered: The light-up knobs glow white when the cooktop is cool and switch to red when it’s hot, while the front panel displays the temperature of each burner for easy monitoring. The oven features a self-cleaning function and self-clean-proof side racks, which don't need to be removed when using this function.

Best Smart Stove

Dacor 36-Inch Freestanding Dual Fuel Smart Range

Type: Dual-fuel range | Size: 36 in. | Oven capacity: 6.3 cu. ft. | Number of burners: Six | Cooktop maximum BTUs: Two burners 22,000; four burners 16,000

Dacor, part of Samsung’s luxury appliance lineup, is known for integrating smart technology into its designs. A standout element is its Wi-Fi-enabled touchpad integrated with SmartThings, which allows remote control and detailed settings for probe cooking, timers and specialized functions like dehydrate, steam proof and keep warm.

Performance-wise, this range excelled in even oven baking, particularly with toasting bread. However, stovetop heat distribution and cookie baking yielded lower scores, indicating some uneven results.

The cooktop includes continuous grates for easy pot movement, though its intricate design — large grates, small crevices and removable parts — makes cleaning a chore. All burners are the same size, providing consistency but lacking flexibility for various cooking needs.

The extra-large oven’s thoughtful design includes two rollout racks, an automatic light that illuminates when opened and steam-based features powered by a built-in water reservoir. Unique dual-center knobs handle oven cooking features and temperature adjustments, while interchangeable burner caps (brassy gold or black) add a customizable aesthetic touch.

Best 48-Inch

Signature Kitchen Suite 48-Inch Dual-Fuel Pro Range with Sous Vide and Induction

Credit: Signature Kitchen Suite

Type: Dual-fuel range | Size: 48 in. | Oven capacity: 2.7 and 5.2 cu. ft. | Number of burners: Four gas, two induction | Cooktop maximum BTUs: Two burners 23,000; two burners 15,000

Signature Kitchen Suite (SKS), a premium brand by LG, specializes in forward-thinking appliances like this 48-inch dual-fuel pro range. While we haven’t tested many SKS products yet, we’ve spent some hands-on time with this range.

We also recently tested the brand's Transitional Series 30-inch double-wall oven, which won a Kitchen Gear Award for its superior broiling and cake-baking performance and incredibly even heat distribution.

Bleyer says she looks forward to getting this 48-inch range into the Lab for a full slate of testing but can already tell that professionals and cooking enthusiasts alike would appreciate that it features both gas burners and induction burners, plus a sous vide compartment.

The convection oven features a steam setting too, making it an all-in-one cooking appliance that looks gorgeous to boot. However, its hybrid design and extensive features come with a steep price and perhaps a steep learning curve.

Best 30-Inch

Miele 30-Inch Gas Range

30-Inch Gas Range
Credit: Miele

Type: Gas range | Size: 30 in. | Oven capacity: 4.6 cu. ft. | Number of burners: Four | Cooktop maximum BTUs: Three burners 19,500; one burner 12,500

This 30-inch gas range offers the same build quality and attention to detail as Miele’s dual-fuel models but is ideal for smaller kitchens. While its capacity and burner count are limited compared to most pro-style ranges, its precision controls make it a favorite for those who value quality over quantity.

The oven's twin power convection fans ensure even heat distribution throughout the oven. This unique luxury feature allows for consistent and precise cooking results by circulating hot air more efficiently, reducing cooking times and enabling multi-rack baking without flavor transfer.

We’ve continued using our tester model for years and years and find it reliable with the best broiler performance among all the ranges we’ve tested. However, it doesn’t perform as well in baking tests. The self-clean function makes that task easy.

How we test the best pro-style ranges

double line break

At the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we have spent the past two decades rigorously testing nearly 100 ranges and cooktops. Our selection process is meticulous, involving showroom visits, in-depth research and consultations with brand representatives to identify the best models to evaluate.

With the capacity to test five ranges side-by-side in the Lab, we continually update our lineup to assess the latest options.

For cooktops, we measure how quickly burners bring six quarts of water to a boil, maintain a steady simmer and distribute heat evenly by browning flour in a skillet.

We also assess the usability of controls, knobs, racks and handles, using thermal guns to ensure surfaces remain safe to touch during operation.

Oven performance is assessed by baking yellow cakes and chocolate chip cookies to gauge evenness and consistency, with over 60 cakes and 1,410 cookies baked to date.

Broilers are tested with white bread and steak, while air-fry functions are evaluated using chicken wings, and steam cooking is put to the test with salmon.

Cleaning efficiency is tested by baking on a simulated mess to evaluate the self-cleaning feature. This detailed approach ensures only the top-performing electric ranges make the cut.

What to look for when shopping for professional gas ranges and high-end stoves

double line break

Aesthetics: Professional gas ranges are as much a statement piece as they are a tool. Brands like BlueStar and Fisher & Paykel excel in delivering stunning designs with customizable finishes and bespoke color options.

Installation: Most high-end ranges are built-in slide-in models, which offer a seamless look. Freestanding models, though less common in this category, have finished side panels and can stand alone in your kitchen or be installed between your kitchen cabinets.

Power source: Dual-fuel models combine the precision of electric ovens with the power of gas burners. Newer ranges have also incorporated induction cooktops. Gas-only ranges, like the BlueStar, prioritize raw cooking power.

Output (BTU): BTU ratings vary widely across models. High-output burners (18,000-23,500 BTUs) excel at searing, while low-output burners (as low as 500 BTUs) ensure precise simmering. Assess your cooking style to determine your needs.

Price: High-end ranges range from $5,000 to over $15,000, depending on features and brand. Consider your budget alongside the must-have features.

Size: Ranging from 30 to 60 inches, size is a key factor. Compact 30-inch models like the Miele above are ideal for small kitchens, while larger models like the 48-inch Signature Kitchen Suite range accommodate extensive cooking needs.

Cooktop style: Some ranges include extras like griddles or grill options. Hybrid cooktops, as seen in the Signature Kitchen Suite, blend gas and induction for maximum versatility.

Features: Look for features such as convection ovens, steam cooking, self-cleaning modes and smart technology. Advanced options like sous vide, guided cooking, probe cooking and infrared grilling elevate the cooking experience.

User interface: Modern ranges increasingly incorporate digital touchscreens, while others maintain minimalistic manual controls. Choose what aligns with your comfort level.

Ventilation needs: Professional ranges produce significant heat and smoke, requiring high-quality ventilation. Ensure your kitchen can support an appropriate hood or vent system. A professional range typically requires a vent hood capable of handling at least 600 CFM (cubic feet per minute) to manage heat and smoke effectively.

Where to buy high-end kitchen appliances

double line break

High-end ranges are occasionally available at retail stores like Best Buy or Home Depot, but Bleyer recommends going to the brands’ showrooms or design stores to see the appliances firsthand — even if you ultimately purchase online.

“Sometimes they even offer cooking demos where you can try an appliance out or watch a chef cook on it and ask questions,” she says. You can also consult your interior designer, but that’s more from a design side, not performance.

Which professional range should I choose?

double line break

Depending on the model, pro-style ranges and high-end stoves are geared toward different people. “High-end models can be super intuitive with lots of helpful tools and settings or very barebones like a professional chef’s range,” says Bleyer. “There are also ones right in the middle.”

If you can afford a high-end range, there are various options based on your culinary needs. Do you have a personal chef in your home, or are you a skilled home cook? A professional range may be good for you. If you cook often but wouldn’t mind extra help, a high-end stove with extra tools for ease of use like guided cooking might be more your speed.

Are dual-fuel ranges better than gas-only models?

double line break

Dual-fuel ranges combine the precision of electric ovens with the responsiveness of gas burners, making them ideal for versatile cooking. However, they tend to be more expensive. “We’re also seeing induction enter the pro-range arena,” says Bleyer. “It makes sense because induction ranges offer precise performance.”

Do high-end stoves come with good warranties?

double line break

“Unfortunately, luxury ranges don’t always equal good warranties, so that’s something to consider,” says Bleyer. High-end ranges include manufacturer warranties similar to that of standard ranges (one to five years). However, brands that are more professional than simply luxury tend to offer great durability.
