Newborns spend most of their time sleeping, so the crib mattress is one of the most important purchases you'll make as a new parent (no pressure, right?). If it helps you budget: You will get years of use out of this purchase, since a crib mattress also fits a toddler bed. First and foremost, you want it to be firm, supportive and made with safe materials. On top of that, it should be easy to clean, because accidents are inevitable. Some parents also like if a mattress has dual firmness: an extra-firm side for the first year and a slightly softer side for the toddler years.

What's the best crib mattress? Our pick for the best overall crib mattress is the My Green Mattress Emily Organic Crib Mattress. It's certified organic, meaning all materials follow strict standards. Our testers loved using it, and the brand offers a generous year-long return period so there's low risk in the investment.

The scientists and engineers in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab have evaluated over 20 crib mattresses in the past eight years. First, we review each model for features such as materials, safety features and certifications. In fact, every recommendation in this article is Greenguard Certified. Our analysts and consumer testers then try out the crib mattresses in their own homes, providing feedback on aspects like how well they fit in a crib, how easy they are to change and how they hold up over time. Our recommendations offer something for every material preference and budget

After our list, read more about what to consider when shopping for a crib mattress and how to set up a safe sleep environment for your baby.

      Pros

      • Reasonably priced for a high-quality, organic mattress
      • 365-night trial period

      Cons

      • Not dual firmness

Made from organic materials and high quality at a reasonable price, this earns our top spot. Constructed from organic latex and coconut fibers surrounded by an outer layer of wool and cotton, it's certified organic by GOTS and GOLS so you know the entire process follows strict standards. It also has a 365-night trial period, so if your baby doesn’t take to it, you can send it back for a refund. (You need to have had the mattress covered with a mattress protector for it to be eligible.)

Our testers gave the Emily a perfect score for overall satisfaction. One noted, "Structurally it seemed more firm and supportive than any other I've used." My Green Mattress also makes our best organic kids mattress and won our Sustainable Innovation Award for their corporate initiatives. Our only quibble is that the firmness is the same on both sides, so there’s not a softer side to move up to.

      Twilight Crib and Toddler Mattress

      Pros

      • Affordable
      • Dual firmness

      Cons

      • Waterproof vinyl cover can be a little noisy

If you're looking to save, this style is frequently on sale at Amazon and has more than 7,000 five-star reviews. It's reversible with two firmness levels so you'll be able to use the firmer side during the first year and the softer side going forward.

It also features a reinforced, waterproof cover and binding that resist liquids and stains, super helpful for diaper leaks through potty training days. The downside is that the vinyl cover can be a bit noisy as your little one shifts around. The Dream On Me company also makes a mini crib mattress if you've purchased a mini crib instead of a full-size one.

      Best Innerspring Crib Mattress

      Saatva Crib Mattress

      Pros

      • Supportive edge keeps newborns toward the mattress center
      • Durable coils

      Cons

      • Higher price

What we really love is how the innerspring core of this crib mattress — 200 recycled-steel coils — is surrounded by firm edge support. It keeps your young baby toward the center of the mattress and when your toddler grows big enough to stand on the mattress edge, the support keeps the mattress from sinking down.

Our textile experts (including real moms!) also appreciate how it uses latex instead of foam, since foam has the potential to off gas. The outside of this crib mattress is cotton that you can take off to wash, and you can flip it from a baby side to a toddler side. The Saatva Classic Mattress is our best mattress pick for adults, plus the crib mattress is sold with free UPS ground shipping and has a 45-day free return window.

      Pros

      • Increased airflow
      • Good edge support

      Cons

      • Some noticed a synthetic smell at first

Instead of using traditional mattress materials, this breathable option is filled with compressed poly fibers to increase airflow. One GH staffer switched to this crib mattress when her daughter had night sweats as a toddler, and said that it really did help. The cotton cover has a water-repellant finish to protect against messes, and the dual-sided design means you can flip it over for the toddler years.

While some mattresses sink at the edges when baby stands on them, this one has a two-inch perimeter of edge support. The cotton cover is machine washable. The only complaints we found were that some online reviewers said this mattress had a synthetic smell when they first unwrapped it; the brand itself claims there are no harmful VOCs or off-gassing since it doesn't contain foam.

      Best Washable Crib Mattress

      Newton Wovenaire Crib Mattress

      Pros

      • Entire mattress (including the inside) can be cleaned
      • Made to be breathable
      • Core can be recycled when you're done with it

      Cons

      • Not organic

At some point every baby has a diaper leak or gets sick in their crib or toddler bed. With this brand the entire mattress can be cleaned. The removable cover was easy to zip off and machine wash in our tests, while the web-like material on the inside can be fully rinsed (think: hosed off in your shower). "I like this way more than any other crib mattress I have used or even seen because it is so much easier to clean," one consumer tester told us. Another said, "After you rinse the actual mattress off it will air dry quickly.”

The interior structure is firm yet breathable because the plastic webbing allows for lots of air to pass through. The inner core is even recyclable (just note that you'll have to find a recycling facility that can accept it; the brand says to reach out if you need help finding one). It's not made from organic materials, if that's important to you. Shown here is white, but it also comes in gray, pink and blue.

      Pros

      • Certified organic
      • Lightweight for an organic option

      Cons

      • The thinnest crib mattress on our list

Naturepedic offers lots of organic crib mattress options at varying price points, but this one stands out because it weighs less than other organic options at just 11 pounds. It still boasts all the great qualities of a good organic crib mattress, like firm and flat support with a waterproof cover. It's also certified organic by GOTS so you know it's responsibly made throughout the entire process. Both the outside fabric and the inside filling of this crib mattress are made of organic cotton. Note that it is the thinnest on our list at only four inches thick.

      Best Lightweight Crib Mattress

Lullaby Earth Healthy Support Crib Mattress

      Healthy Support Crib Mattress

      Pros

      • Lightweight for easy sheet changes
      • Extra edge support

      Cons

      • Not made from organic materials

Lifting the mattress can be a hassle when you have to reach inside a deep crib, but this model is the lightest in our roundup and weighs only seven pounds. It helps to make changing the crib sheet much easier, especially if you have to do it frequently to clean up diaper leaks and spit up.

The inside is a firm and durable woven plastic, with extra support around the edges for when baby starts to stand. While this mattress is not made from polyurethane foam, it is not an organic option. The brand does sell a heavier 15-pound crib mattress with a breathable mattress protector and dual-sided firmness for about $100 more.

      Best Luxury Crib Mattress

      Pros

      • Top-notch quality materials and craftsmanship
      • Certified organic

      Cons

      • Very expensive
      • Heaviest by far on our list

For those willing and able to splurge, this bespoke, made-to-order crib mattress is absolutely worth it. Our experts were blown away by the quality construction, plus it's certified organic by both GOTS and GOLS. The dual-firmness mattress is made up of coils and organic materials like latex, cotton, wool and coconut fibers. Each mattress is hand-sewn to avoid the use of glues. But note that the end result is a 36-pound mattress, so it's super sturdy but requires some work to flip it and change the crib sheet.

The brand was a winner of our Sustainable Innovation Awards and earns our top spot for the best organic mattress for adults. Given that the price is significantly more expensive than most other mattresses, this is not a realistic choice for many, but if you’re looking for the very best, this is the one to buy.

How we test the best crib mattresses

      line break

Our fiber scientists and engineers in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab evaluate mattresses of all types. When it comes to crib mattresses, we review each one for its materials and features, considering aspects like safety, convenience, innovation, value and more. Then we have parents use them in their own homes, with their babies and toddlers, giving us feedback via surveys and sharing insight about how these crib mattresses perform in real life. We've reviewed more than 20 crib mattresses in the past eight years and many more mattresses for kids of all ages.

What to look for when shopping for a crib mattress

      line break

✔️ Size: According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), crib mattresses must be at least 27 1/4 inches wide and 51 1/4 inches long to ensure a secure fit in the crib. They also shouldn't be more than six inches thick.

✔️ Fit: The crib mattress should fit securely in the crib with no gaps between sides. If you can fit more than two fingers between the sides of the crib and the mattress, that means the gap is too wide and poses a risk to the baby.

✔️ Safety: Make sure the fitted crib sheet hugs the mattress securely enough so that your baby can’t pull the edges up, causing a suffocating hazard. An infant's crib should have nothing else in it — no pillows, blankets, stuffed animals or other toys. There also shouldn’t be anything hanging near the crib that baby can pull down.

✔️ Buy new: When it comes to crib mattresses, it's best to buy new instead of used. A used one may not be as firm, can have mildew or bacteria growth, and may not be up-to-date with the latest safety regulations.

✔️ Certifications: If you prefer an organic mattress for your baby, check for certification from Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for fabrics and Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) for latex, which ensure the entire manufacturing process follows strict standards. These certifications are especially important because some mattresses claim to be "organic" when they only use one organic component, like an organic cotton cover over a synthetic foam interior.

What type of mattress is best for a crib?

      line break

Mattresses for babies aren't just smaller versions of ones designed for kids or adults. They're built with extra attention to safety and development for their growing bodies. Here's what you should consider when you shop:

✔️ Extra firm: The best mattress for a newborn is one that’s extra firm; in fact, it should be so hard that as an adult, you can’t imagine it possibly being comfortable to sleep on. Not only does this support their developing bones, but it also helps reduce the risk of SIDS.

✔️ Dual-sided: When a baby is about a year old, they can have a slightly softer (yet still firm) surface to sleep on. Many crib mattresses are reversible with infant and toddler sides so you can use the same one for several years until your child is ready to transition into a bed.

✔️ Foam or innerspring materials: Just like the inner materials in a regular mattress, you’ll commonly choose between innerspring and foam crib mattresses. Innerspring models have steel coils to make it sturdy (the more coils, the more supportive it’ll be), while foam mattresses are usually made of dense yet lightweight polyurethane foam or latex. If you're buying a foam crib mattress, check for GreenGuard Gold certification to be sure that there are low emissions and no harmful levels of off-gassing VOCs. All of the foam mattresses picked by our experts have been GreenGuard certified.

Can a crib mattress help prevent SIDS?

a white crib mattress in a beige crib
      Avocado Green Mattress

Crib mattresses are not medical devices and can't claim to help fight Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). But using a firm, flat surface for your baby's sleep is one of the important steps that the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests. They also stress:

✔️ Putting your baby on their back to sleep, every time, is the best prevention against accidental suffocation.

✔️ Use a crib mattress in a crib, wrapped only in a fitted crib sheet. No other bedding is needed, and don't try to make a twin-size bed sheet fit around the little crib mattress. Better you go with no sheet than the wrong sheet!

✔️ Overheating can increase the rise of SIDS, so don't dress your baby in more than one additional layer from what you yourself would wear. Check their skin to be sure they're not flushed or sweaty.

✔️ Don't allow your baby to sleep in your adult bed or in an infant swing or other piece of baby gear. You can read the AAP's complete list of baby sleep suggestions for more.
