A comfortable bed is key to a good night's sleep, but finding the best bedding that looks great and feels amazing is easier said than done. Even if it's not time to replace your entire bed, upgrading items like your sheets, comforters, pillows and other accessories can have a major effect on your overall comfort.

As a fiber scientist in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, I've been testing bedding for well over a decade using specialized equipment and reviewing feedback from our panel of consumer testers. In the Lab, my team and I evaluate everything from fabric strength and moisture management to wrinkle-, shrinkage- and pilling-resistance. We also send bedding items to hundreds of people on our tester panel to weigh in on everything from ease of use to softness to the overall effect on sleep quality.

You can read more about how we test bedding and what to keep in mind as you shop at the end of this article, but first, here are the best bedding items you can buy:

Best Sheet Set

Brooklinen Luxe Core Sheet Set

Pros

  • Strong and comfortable fabric
  • Labels for easy bed making
  • Earned the Good Housekeeping Seal

Cons

  • May be too short for tall mattresses

I've been testing these Brooklinen sheets for nearly a decade and they're consistently my top recommendation because they offer a great balance of quality and value. They're made with soft and durable cotton sateen fabric yet they're not too pricey. I use this set at home on my own bed (including the matching duvet cover) and love how the designs are neutral but not boring. The fitted sheet even has "long side" and "short side" labels for easy bed-making. One thing to note is that the fitted sheet isn't super deep, so it may be a bit snug on taller mattresses or beds with mattress toppers.

This set includes a fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillowcases, but Brooklinen offers a variety of sets in this material so you can find the configuration that works best for your bed. Another perk: Brooklinen offers any-reason returns for up to a year (minus a $9.95 return fee), so there's low risk to try them out. They also earned the Good Housekeeping Seal, meaning we stand behind it with our limited warranty.

WHY OUR TESTERS LOVE IT: We've had dozens of testers sleep on these sheets for extended periods, and they gave the set high scores for appearance, comfort, softness and being easy to put on the bed. One tester summarized her experience by saying, "I like that the sheets feel very soft to the touch, yet feel that they are made with a quality material that has not pilled, or shown major signs of wear and tear. I like that the sheets came to my home extremely fast via delivery, only days after ordering."

Best Comforter

Buffy Cloud Comforter

Cloud Comforter

Pros

  • Fluffy and cloud-like feel
  • Soft and quiet outer fabric
  • Recycled down alternative fill

Cons

  • Only available in one color and one warmth level

Another tester (and personal!) favorite, Buffy's comforter stands out for being exceptionally soft and fluffy. It uses a unique construction with a web of fibers instead of individual clusters to prevent clumping and a wavy stitching pattern so it's less compressed than a box-stitched comforter. The outer cover is made of Tencel lyocell, a material that's smooth, lightweight and quiet — so no crinkly sounds when you move under the cover. It only comes in one warmth level, but it's designed for year-round use.

Though you can technically use it on its own, it has corner loops to attach a duvet cover, which we recommend so you won't have to wash it as often. It's also only available in white, so a cover will add a more decorative element to your bed. Other things to note: It's fully machine washable and it has a Global Recycling Standard (GRS) certification thanks to its fill of recycled polyester made from water bottles,

WHY OUR TESTERS LOVE IT: Our reviewers consistently describe it as feeling like they're sleeping in a cloud. "It was very comfortable to sleep under and gave the bed a nice, cozy feel," said one tester. "It also looks plump and luxurious without being overly heavy." Users also gave it perfect scores for remaining quiet throughout the night and for the fill not shedding or poking through at all.

Best Pillow

Coop Home Goods Original Pillow

Original Pillow

Pros

  • High ratings from testers
  • Adjustable fill is supportive yet cushioning
  • Machine washable

Cons

  • Outer cover pills easily

With a standout performance in both Textiles Lab and at-home tests, Coop Home Goods' pillow comes with extra stuffing that you can add or remove to create your own personalized height. The fill is a blend of memory foam pieces and microfiber clusters that offers good support while still feeling fluffy.

I also love that the entire pillow is machine washable, which usually isn't the case with foam. It bounced back to shape in our Lab's pressure tests, so you can expect it to keep its shape even after your head has been lying on it all night. Just note that the outer cover (which is a blend of rayon and polyester) pills over time.

WHY OUR TESTERS LOVE IT: Our testers said was it comfortable and supportive, and many even said that it improved their overall sleep quality. One described the cradling comfort by saying, "It wraps around my head, and I sink into it." Another told us, "When I go to bed, I look forward to sleeping on it as I know I will have a restful night's sleep."

Pros

  • Low price for cotton sheets
  • Resisted pilling in our durability tests
  • Soft and substantial, according to testers

Cons

  • May not feel as luxurious as pricier sets

Most cotton sheet sets cost well over $100, but this one has an unbeatable price and performed exceptionally well in our tests. Besides being loved by sleep testers, it also held up to Lab evaluations with perfect scores for pill resistance.

I also love this set's versatility. For starters, the fitted sheets are generously sized so they can fit tall mattresses. You can also purchase the items individually instead of as a set in case you want to mix and match or just buy extra pieces. It comes in more than 30 colors and designs to match your bedroom and is available in a matching duvet cover set to complete the look.

WHY OUR TESTERS LOVE IT: At-home users found it to have a good weight — i.e., it wasn't thin or flimsy. One told us, "The sheets are very comfortable and crisp (without being overly crisp to the point of being stiff)." Another added, "These were very well-made and comfortable sheets and seemed substantial."

Best Hotel Sheets

The Company Store Legends Hotel Sheets

Pros

  • High softness scores
  • Strong and shrink-resistant fabric
  • Mix and match options available

Cons

  • Pricier than other sets

If you're willing to splurge on luxury bedding, this set is absolutely worth it. It earned the highest softness scores in a blind comparison test against other cotton sheets. The fabric is made with Supima cotton (which is similar to Egyptian cotton, but grown in the U.S.) and has a sateen weave with a substantial thickness that resisted shrinkage in our wash tests.

Beyond the high-end quality, this set stands out for its flexible offerings. You can build your own set by buying the fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillowcases and duvet cover separately, and with over a dozen colors to choose from you can also mix and match the sets. Plus, there's a deep-pocket option to fit mattresses up to 20 inches tall.

WHY OUR TESTERS LOVE IT: "These sheets are fabulous for all-year use," one tester told us. "They are soft, feel luxurious and look amazing.” Users also pointed out that although the fabric felt smooth, it wasn't slippery. They loved the thickness and said the fitted sheet stayed put nicely on their beds.

Best Cooling Comforter

Rest Evercool Cooling Comforter

Evercool Cooling Comforter

Pros

  • Cool against skin and moisture-wicking
  • Lightweight
  • Reversible for two color options

Cons

  • Not intended to use with a duvet cover

Using a cool-to-the-touch fabric that you have to feel to believe, Rest's cooling comforter is the perfect solution for hot sleepers. Besides feeling cool, it also proved to be moisture-wicking in our Lab's tests, meaning it can help keep sweaty sleepers dry. Plus, it's super smooth and more lightweight than traditional comforters.

The cover is made with an ultra-thin nylon that helps achieve its smoothness, and the fill is a blend of a fluffy polyester and Tencel lyocell. It's designed to be used without a duvet cover, but it comes in six different colors and is reversible so you have options for your bed.

WHY OUR TESTERS LOVE IT: Our testers — all self-proclaimed hot sleepers — gave it perfect scores for keeping them at a comfortable body temperature throughout the night. "As a hot sleeper, I really appreciate this comforter's cooling effects, especially during the summer," one explained. "I'm using the cooling comforter with a memory foam mattress topper and pillow and I would definitely be overheating without it." Another pointed out that it gave the secure feeling of sleeping with a cover without sacrificing temperature.

Best Quilt

Pottery Barn TENCEL Quilt

TENCEL Quilt
Credit: Pottery Barn

Pros

  • Soft and smooth
  • Decorative appearance that was loved by all testers
  • Good for pet owners

Cons

  • May not be warm enough for cold weather

If you prefer a decorative look for your bed or you want to avoid using a comforter and duvet cover, this comfy quilt stands out for its plush feel and textured appearance. The outer fabric is a soft and lightweight Tencel lyocell while the fill is a polyester down alternative. It's available in eight color options and you can purchase matching shams to complete the look.

WHY OUR TESTERS LOVE IT: Our reviewers unanimously gave it perfect scores for appearance. "This quilt adds a fancy hotel texture to the bedroom that I really like," one told us. "It was light and fluffy but very cozy, even with no other blankets on the bed." As an added bonus, pet owners told us that pet hair didn't stick to the smooth fabric.

Best Silk PIllowcase

Fishers Finery 25mm Mulberry Silk Pillowcase

25mm Mulberry Silk Pillowcase

Pros

  • High comfort ratings
  • Moisture wicking fabric
  • Held up to abrasion tests

Cons

  • Slight shrinkage after laundering

Silk pillowcases feel soft and luxurious to lie on, plus the smooth surface helps prevent skin creases and bedhead. This one from Fishers Finery is a Good Housekeeping Seal holder; it was durable in Lab evaluations and didn't show signs of wear in our abrasion tests. It was also moisture-wicking, meaning it can help you feel cool and dry as you sleep, though it did shrink a bit in the wash. Silk quality is determined by fabric weight, and 25 momme is among the most substantial options on the market. And though it's certainly not cheap, it outperformed much pricier styles.

WHY OUR TESTERS LOVE IT: All of our sleep testers loved how comfortable and refreshing it felt, noting that it led them to waking up without skin creases. One added, "The silky case was better for my hair than my cotton pillowcase."

How we test bedding

double line break

The fiber scientists and engineers in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab test hundreds of bedding items each year. Each item gets put through the wringer in our Lab using specialized equipment to determine performance and durability, plus we send the bedding to the homes of our consumer testers who share feedback on aspects like ease of use, comfort, softness, support and more. Here are more details about how we test some of the top bedding categories:

Sheets

sheets testing on the instron machine
Philip Friedman

When we test sheets in the Lab, we look at features like fabric strength (using a machine called an Instron, pictured here), pilling resistance, wrinkle resistance, shrinkage and appearance after laundering and more. Sleep testers weigh in with ratings on softness, comfort, temperature regulation and more.

Comforters

Dan Dai and Jay Aguirre

Our bedding pros first perform a quality inspection on the duvet inserts and comforters, checking everything from whether the stitching is secure to whether the outer fabric is quiet. We also check to see if the fill sheds and whether there are any odors upon opening. Sleep testers then use the comforters for several weeks before reporting back on aspects like the temperature, noise level, fill shifting, ease of attaching a duvet cover and more.

Pillows

an analyst places weights on a pillow

Our product analysts measure shape retention in the Textiles Lab by timing how quickly the pillows return to their original shape after weights are applied for an extended period (pictured here), which mimics your head sleeping on it overnight. We also assess how easy the pillows are to clean (some are not even washable!) and whether they actually hold up to laundering. On top of that, we check whether they properly fit into a pillowcase.

At the same time, real consumers try out the pillows during sleep testing. Testers are each assigned a specific pillow based on a screening survey to make sure they get a proper match for their sleep style, then they sleep on it for several weeks before providing feedback. The pillows are scored on comfort, support, temperature regulation and more, plus testers have the opportunity to answer open-ended questions about their experiences.

How to shop for the best bedding

double line break

Consider what matters most to you, whether it's softness, convenience, price or another factor. When it comes to the main bedding categories, here's what to look for when you shop:

✔️ Sheets: Instead of focusing on the thread count, consider the fiber and weave:

  • Check the fiber content. 100% cotton sheets are the most popular because they're soft, strong and comfortable to lie on. Polyester or cotton/polyester blends are often more durable and less expensive, but they don’t feel as natural. You can also choose from novelty fibers (like lyocell or linen) for a unique feel.
  • Choose the construction. Your main choices are percale (a basic, grid-like weave that feels light and crisp) or sateen (a satin weave that feels smooth). You can also opt for flannel for more warmth, microfiber that feels buttery smooth, or jersey that’s stretchy and feels more like a T-shirt.

✔️ Comforters: The most important decision to make is whether you prefer down or down alternative. Here are the main things to keep in mind for each:

  • Down, which comes from ducks or geese, are fluffy clusters that trap in air for better warmth. Check the fill power when you shop; it tells you how much space the clusters take up and how well it can insulate. For a warm and toasty comforter, look for a fill power over 600.
  • Down alternatives are typically synthetic fibers, so they’re better for allergy sufferers and are usually less expensive and easier to clean. With the right construction, synthetic down can still feel fluffy and cozy.

✔️ Pillows: Besides choosing the type of pillow you prefer — whether you like down, down alternative, memory foam or latex — also consider your sleep position and body type when you shop. The ultimate goal is to have your head, neck and spine properly aligned with no tilting in any direction. Here's how to pick which pillow is right for you:

  • Sleep position: Pillows for side sleepers should be thick and firm, while pillows for stomach sleepers should be softer and thinner. Pillows for back sleepers (or for those who switch positions) can fall somewhere in between.
  • Body type: People with larger frames need a taller and firmer pillow, while smaller folks should opt for something lower and flatter. Medium frames will fall somewhere in between.
