The right rug can add an extra layer of comfort to any space (especially if you go for a thicker, more heavily-piled option) or give a room an instant sense of character (if you choose a design that has an eye-catching pattern or bold colour). Before you decide which rug is right for you, there are a couple of factors to consider.

First, the shape of your rug. 'Rectangular rugs are very versatile and will work in almost any room,' explains Cassandra Leisz, the Senior Creative Director at Ruggable. 'They're great for defining areas in open spaces and work well in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms,' she says. 'Round rugs tend to soften the feel of a space and create a focal point. They're ideal underneath dining or coffee tables. Runners, meanwhile, are a great way to add warmth and style to narrow spaces.'

Tasha Green, founder of sustainable interiors brand Weaver Green, says that size is as important as shape when it comes to selecting a rug. 'An oversized rug can overwhelm a room, while a rug that is too small can make spaces feel disjointed,' she says. 'The rug you choose should be proportional to the room size,' she explains. 'I'd always recommend measuring the length and width of your room to understand the overall space, and to make sure you'll have enough clear space around the rug.'

From statement designs to contemporary updates on the classics, our Homes Editor has picked some of the best rugs available for you to shop now...
