With Christmas now only 18 weeks away, the signs are clear that this festive season will be one full of colour, pattern and decorations so fun they'll bring a smile to any Scrooge’s face – say hello to 'Kitschmas'.
With some of our favourite retailers including John Lewis & Partners and Dunelm embracing this vibrant trend, we're all for being unapologetically fun and bringing a lighter look to the Christmas celebrations.
Many of you may have spotted the 'kitschen' trend taking over your Instagram feeds at the start of this year, showing how to embrace pops of colour in your kitchen, but the trend continues apace. Many retailers have rolled out the look for the festive season, too, and it is set to be the biggest trend for Christmas 2024.
While most of us tend to opt for either luxurious white Christmas decor or a classical red and green theme to our Christmas trees, this trend is at the completely other end of the spectrum – in the best way possible.
Good Housekeeping's Homes and Gardens Editor James Cunningham explains why he forecasts kitschmas to be the biggest Christmas trend yet.
"Fun is the key ingredient to every celebration, and the Kitschmas look is set to make this festive season all the more exciting! This playful trend is all about being brilliantly out-there.
"From swapping the star on top of your tree to a disco-ball or changing up your cushions to ones emblazoned with novelty slogans, more is definitely more. If you're a traditionalist, tap into all things kitsch by investing in a choice decoration or two to instantly turn your tree into a talking point."

Pink Christmas trees
Did you think pink was so 2023? Well in the world of Kitschmas, pink is everywhere, including on artificial Christmas trees. Whether you looking for more of a blush peachy hue or a candy floss coloured Christmas tree, a pink one will make the perfect eye-catching centrepiece in your sitting room this festive season. If you've already got a tree – or always choose to go for the real thing – try festooning it with pink baubles or placing a couple of pink festive accessories around your home to channel the trend.

It's all about mix and matching when it comes to Kitschmas and, when it comes to baubles, the quirkier the better! With many brands creating baubles this year that are flamboyant, unique and even nostalgic, celebrate the season with playful decorations – from food and drink to celebrity icons! A wonderful combination will make for a winning tree this year. Make sure you pick out baubles that are personal to you and your family, as they can be fabulous conversation starters when having guests over.

Fun lighting
Of course, decorating your space for the festive season isn’t just about the baubles on your tree. Novelty lighting is a brilliant way to bring a sense of fun into any room – and something you may never have considered before! For extra style points, go for a design that uses a bright colour (rather than simple warm white) or choose one that brings a Christmas shape into the mix. Does anything say Kitschmas more than a neon light-up wreath?
Bold accessories
Never underestimate the power of accessories, particularly during the festive season – a new throw here or a lovely vase there can instantly change the look and feel of a space.
