The seminal film that is Clueless might have been released almost 30 years ago but that doesn't mean it's doesn't still provide plenty of fashion inspiration all this time later. We're mainly talking about the protagonist Cher Horowitz, of course, and her endless array of preppy-chic outfits that have become the stuff of legend – and are a firm favourite of the fashion pack still to this day.
The most memorable look of hers is undoubtedly *that* yellow plaid mini-skirt suit, that she wears in one of the film's opening scenes alongside best friend Dionne who rocks a co-ordinating black-and-white set. It's an image that's gone down in film fashion history as truly iconic, and has since been replicated by everyone from Amanda Seyfried and Margot Robbie to Alicia Silverstone herself – and not as a Halloween or fancy-dress costume, either.
Nope, it seems the Cher Horowitz-approved check mini-skirt suit is officially back in fashion, and Penélope Cruz is the latest celebrity to embrace the trend.
Attending the Creative Impact Awards in Palm Springs over the weekend, the 49-year-old actor channeled the Clueless character in a bright pink check co-ord that we can totallt imagine hanging in Cher's digital closet.
While Cher's iconic two-piece was from Dolce & Gabbana, Penélope's preppy tweed ensemble is in fact by Chanel. We love that the Parisian brand has updated the timeless design by adding an asymmetric hemline, contrast seams and a beautiful embroidered floral panel on the front of the jacket. Penélope kept her accessories simple to let the suit do all the talking, adding just a classic black Chanel bag, thin hoop earrings and platform sandals.
We just know that Cher would 100% approve – and we do too.
