Cate Blanchett broke all the rules of Chelsea Flower Show dressing today, arriving to its preview event wearing a sharply tailored steel-grey blazer, pale blue shirt and loose belted brown trousers.
While this outfit description speaks more of urban cityscapes than British gardens in full bloom, Cate’s style inspiration is nonetheless extremely current, if not futuristic, if you know where she’s borrowing her ideas from.
Cate is no stranger to high fashion; she’s a confirmed and long-time fan of Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton and Giorgio Armani, and recently stepped out on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert wearing a fresh-from-the-catwalk pale pink suit paired with a lime green blouse by the designer Haider Ackermann, who recently took over the reins at Tom Ford.
In this look worn at the Chelsea Flower Show, Cate was channelling the forthcoming Tom Ford collection by Ackermann for autumn, which, as its finale, featured a succession of steel-grey double-breasted suits – shaping up to be a key trend in the autumn/winter collections come September.
The good – okay, actually amazing – news is, a jacket exactly like Cate’s forms part of the Uniqlo: C collection – created by former Chloé and Givenchy designer Clare Waight Keller, the designer behind the Duchess of Sussex's wedding dress.
Waight Keller joined Uniqlo as its global creative director last September, and is now bringing her honed eye for luxury design to their entire collection, too.
This beautifully tailored jacket from Uniqlo: C, is a perfect case in point - created from a super lightweight technical fabric and in a delicious shade of steel grey, it's on the Uniqlo website this week down from £69.90 to an incredible £29.90. Personally, I think it's one of the best items in the collection, its smart, classic and - bonus! - is actually ahead of the fashion curve.
Don’t all run at once!
