There’s a gripping new crime drama coming to Netflix very soon, which is full of strong characters and dark secrets. In Untamed, we meet special agent Kyle Turner as he investigates a brutal murder in the wilderness that has deep, unsettling connections not only to the national park he works in, but his own past as well.
Netflix bills the show as ‘a character-driven mystery-thriller’, which is set in the grounds of California’s Yosemite National Park. ‘Everyone thinks of Yosemite as this beautiful place with all the vistas and all the scenery, but we were trying to touch on the dangers that are just beyond that,’ co-showrunner Mark L Smith says via Netflix. What is Untamed about?
In Untamed, we meet Kyle Turner (Eric Bana), who’s a special agent in an elite branch of the National Parks Service. His job is to enforce (human!) law in the vast yet beautiful wilderness of Yosemite. His colleague, Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), is new to the team and joins from Los Angeles, meaning a huge change of pace for her. However, when a brutal murder takes place on their patch, Naya’s big-city crime skills mean she’s an asset to Kyle, as they set out on their investigation.
‘Because Vasquez is new to the park, we get to see the park through her eyes,’ co-showrunner Elle Smith says via Netflix. ‘We get to understand what this job is and see the beauty of the park, but also the dangers.’ However, as they delve further into the depths of the crime, Kyle ‘is sent on a collision course with the dark secrets within the park, and in his own past,’ says the synopsis. Exactly what those secrets are, however, we’ll have to wait and see…
Who is in the Untamed cast?
At the heart of the thriller are a tight cast of characters, with actor Eric Bana at the centre as Kyle Turner. Those starring alongside him include:
- Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Apples Never Fall) – Paul Souter: he’s been the chief park ranger in Yosemite for half his life. He’s a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend to Kyle.
- Rosemarie DeWitt (La La Land, The Staircase) – Jill Bodwin: Kyle’s ex-wife. A former teacher and park counsellor, Jill remarried a few years after their divorce but they maintain a strong bond.
- Lily Santiago (La Brea, Mary Jane On Broadway) as Naya Vasquez, an ambitious young copper from Los Angeles and the newest addition to Yosemite’s ranger squad.
- Wilson Bethel (Daredevil, All Rise) – Shane Maguire: a former army ranger who now uses his skills as the park’s wildlife management officer.
