21 best shampoos for dry hair starting from £2, tested on 800 people
Expert-tested products to help revive brittle strands

No matter what your hair texture or type, we all strive for hydrated, healthy-looking tresses. While it can be tricky to add life back into thirsty, lacklustre locks, using one of our best shampoos for dry hair is a savvy place to start.
To help you in your search, our Good Housekeeping Institute product reviews experts, ably assisted by over 800 readers, have tested a wide range of the best shampoos that claim to moisturise parched manes, de-frizz and boost shine.
Here are our salon-worthy stars at a glance but keep scrolling for their full reviews.
What causes hair to become dry?
You’ve probably been lectured with your hairdresser's advice about the importance of using one of the best heat protection sprays, and if you’ve got dry hair, it’s a must. Being overzealous with the straighteners or curling tongs will damage your hair cuticles, which means they can struggle to hold moisture, and will result in ends appearing straw-like.
Plus, as we age, our hair will not only start to lose its natural colour, but also its shine. This is due to hormonal changes — often sparked by menopause — which reduce the amount of natural oil your scalp produces. This can also result in hair looking more brittle and damaged.
Your genetics, diet, climate and general health and wellbeing also all have an impact on the health of your locks. Some of which we have control over and some we don’t, but finding the right hair routine for you is a step in the right direction.
What ingredients are good for dry hair?
Those with thicker hair can opt for richer shampoos containing nourishing oils such as argan and almond oil. These heavier products will be too much for fine hair, though, so if that's you, go for options that contain conditioning agents such as glycerin, which will retain moisture without weighing strands down.
Whatever your hair type, avoid formulas that have a high alcohol content as these will dry out ends. We’ve also highlighted whether the shampoos below contain parabens, silicones or sulphates, in case they’re dealbreakers for you.
How we test
Our panel of 800 testers — with a range of hair types, from straight to kinky and coiled — tried 59 shampoos for a month. From supermarket own-brands to luxe labels, each product claims to hydrate dry ends. Panellists judged each shampoo on its ease of use, packaging design, fragrance and product performance.
In the GHI lab, our experts used a Dia-Stron machine to measure the smoothness of hair switches after they were washed with each product and dried.
Here are the formulations that sit head and shoulders above the rest.
