Best hair straighteners for 2025

Ready to change up your hair? It’s time to invest in a pair of the best hair straighteners for silky smooth strands and creating those effortless, beachy waves.

From premium to budget buys, the Good Housekeeping Institute has tested a plethora of leading hair tools to find the very best straighteners to suit all hair types. As well analysing them in the lab, we sent them out to our panel of 285 testers to try them out as part of their daily routine and give us detailed feedback.

Which hair straighteners are best for my hair type?

Fine hair: Look for ceramic plates that distribute heat evenly and more gently. Use lower temperature settings to minimise heat damage.

Frizzy hair: Ionic technology is a must to stop water and humidity “fluffing up your hair and creating more frizz.

Thick hair: Larger plates will save you time and reduce heat damage. Metal plates will give you the best and most long-lasting results.

Afro hair (3C-4C curl types): Consider ceramic-coated plates, which offer a good balance of effectiveness and protection. Steam hair straighteners are a good alternative for powerful styling that do less damage. There’s a pair (the L'Oréal Professionnel New Generation Steampod 3.0) on our list below.

How we test hair straighteners

best hair straighteners

Our panel of 285 testers — with every type of hair, including straight, wavy, curly, coily and kinky textures — tried a variety of hair straighteners to find the best you can buy.

They fed back on how quickly each tool heated up, how easy it was to reach their roots, whether it achieved their desired look, and how shiny and healthy their hair looked after styling.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute lab, our experts turned to the Bossa Nova Shuffle machine to assess how long their style lasted and how much frizz was created in a humid environment.

They also used an EV Standard machine, which records the temperature of each hair tool, to note how quickly they heated up and measure the accuracy of their temperature settings.

ghd Chronos Max

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Chronos Max

Pros

  • 35-second heat-up time
  • Ultra gloss coating helps boost shine

Cons

  • Trickier to style very short hair because of the large plates

Score: 95/100

The new ghd Chronos Max’s wider plates prove that, sometimes, bigger is better. They’re designed for those with thicker hair and are able to pick up more strands at once and ultimately reduce styling time – cue sighs of relief from those who dread hair wash night.

Our panellists were big fans. “The size of the plates cuts down the straightening time massively,” said one. With a heat-up time of just 35 seconds, it’s speedy from start to finish too. Everyone agreed that it helped them achieve their desired style quickly. Impressed to the max.

While they may be designed for thick hair, our beauty director, Lynne Hyland, who has thinner strands was also a fan, telling us: “While those super-sized plates may have been created to scoop up and tame masses of thick, lustrous locks, they’re also a dream for skinny-haired girls like me in search of a shortcut to va-va-volume.” She also loved the speedy styling and was even accused of having a professional blow dry before heading to the salon by her stylist.

Our experts appreciated the plates’ ultra-gloss coating, which leaves hair looking shinier after just one stroke. “No snagging or catching, and it leaves my mane looking super shiny,” said one pleased tester.

Joint best wet-to-dry straightener

ghd Duet 2-in-1 Hot Air Styler

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Duet 2-in-1 Hot Air Styler

Pros

  • Quick wet-to-dry styling
  • 2-in-1 format makes it a good travel option
  • Reduces frizz

Cons

  • Delivers less volume than a hair dryer
  • Slightly heavy

Score: 92/100

Like the Airstrait (below), this is a handsome hybrid tool, which transforms hair from wet to dry and straightens in half the time. Our panel praised how soft and silky it left their lengths after drying, often without even having to use the ‘shine shot’ straightening function.

It did well in the lab, too. Our experts found it excelled in our humidity tests (meaning lengths were left sleek after use, despite humid conditions) and true-to-claim checks. Ghd assures its customers that none of the brand’s products heat above 185℃ — which it claims to be the optimum temperature for styling without damage — and our lab tests substantiated this for the Duet.

The only small complaints were that it’s heavy and the wide panels mean it's trickier to use on fringes and short hair (we had similar feedback for the Airstrait), but ultimately this is a game-changing tool.

Dyson Airstrait Straightener

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Airstrait Straightener

Pros

  • Quick styling time
  • Auto power-off when you put it down
  • Uses temperature control to reduce hair damage

Cons

  • Only straight styling possible
  • No hanging hook

Score: 92/100

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we're always keen to get our hands on the latest Dyson hair tool to see how it performs in testing. And the new Airstrait didn’t disappoint. Part of a new wave of wet-to-dry hair tools (alongside the ghd Duet), it straightens hair using a concentrated airflow, instead of the heated ceramic plates used by most, which can cause damage if the temperature is too high, they’re used too often, or you forget a heat protector – big no no. (We recommend you always apply one of our best heat protection sprays). This reflects the reduced-damage approach Dyson is known for.

Testers were incredibly impressed with this high-tech hair tool. It scored full marks for straightening hair effectively and quickly, with one person saying it only around five to eight minutes to dry and style their hair – impressive. The most popular feature? It automatically switches off when you set it down, so no more worrying about leaving them on. All this, plus you get a handy HD screen that displays the airflow and temperature settings.

“Very easy to use. Heated up quickly. Hair felt smooth after using it,” was one tester’s straight to the point feedback – speedy sleekness, what more could you want?

Gtech Hair Straighteners

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Hair Straighteners

Pros

  • Helpful display screen
  • Thin and agile plates
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Not everyone loved the colours
  • Some found it easy to accidentally knock the temperature controls

Score: 91/100

You may know the Gtech of household appliance fame – featuring in our best vacuum cleaners and best electric lawnmower roundups – but what if we told you that, much like Dyson before it, the company has taken all its gadget expertise and applied it to tools that give you silky, straight hair? Well, that’s what’s happened. And our testers were pleasantly surprised with the results.

All our panellists said the tool was comfortable to hold, lightweight and easy to travel with, and – more importantly – the straightener turned hair from curly to smooth in a single swipe. Everyone agreed it left dry or damaged looking hair looking healthier, it was easy to achieve their desired look, and they didn’t have to wait long for it to heat up, either.

The only real grumbles were about the colourways available (a bottle green and white) and the fact that – if you aren’t concentrating – it’s easy to knock the temperature dial slightly. All in all, the brand’s first foray into hair tools (it's also launched a hair dryer) has been a successful one – delivering great results at an affordable price point.

Another entry from ghd, it's easy to see why the brand has built its reputation as a market-leader. And we weren't disappointed in our blind tests – these lightweight straighteners are a top pick for creating poker-straight strands.

The rounded barrel makes creating curls and waves easy too, and our testers had no trouble using it for a variety of styles. They also loved how silky their hair felt after use and thought it looked healthier, too.

Their locks stood up to the elements, as everyone said their chosen style lasted till the end of the day.

Remington Wet2Straight Pro Hair Straighteners

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Wet2Straight Pro Hair Straighteners

Pros

  • Affordable
  • The long cord made it easier to style the back of the hair
  • 2-in-1 styling

Cons

  • Takes more than no swipe to straighten
  • Tricky to reach the roots

Score: 81/100

This time-saving device lets you straighten wet hair (rather than using a hair dryer as a middle man). Its unique 'moisture sensor' measures the dampness of your mane and adjusts the temperature accordingly, with excess water particles evaporating through the holes in the plates – that’s seriously smart tech.

Our testers liked how easily it glided through their hair, and were impressed by how quickly they achieved their desired style. Many thought their hair looked healthier, shinier and smoother after use, making it perfect for anyone in need of speedy, salon-worthy results.

Our testers loved it, with nearly all saying how pleased they were with their newly silky and soft hair. It was quick to heat up and the large plates styled and gripped hair well. The indicator sound when it turns on and off gives peace of mind, too.

ghd Chronos Straightener

Chronos Straightener

Pros

  • Sleek design
  • One glide straightening
  • Speedy heat-up time

Cons

  • No adjustable heat settings

Score: 80/100

This is the previous iteration of our winning Chronos Max straightener and given that it's only £20 cheaper, we'd probably opt for the Max if you're looking for premium ghds. However, the motion-responsive straightener is three times quicker at styling hair than the ghd original styler. And our panel backed this up, with all agreeing it was effective at quickly styling hair. “It straightened my hair without having to go over it multiple times,” said one tester.

It has two gloss-coated ceramic plates, which leave hair sleek and frizz-free in just one glide. There’s also a re-engineered wishbone, which keeps the plates in perfect alignment, so you have total control over styling, whether you’re opting for a pin straight 90s ‘do, or soft mermaid curls.

And the brand's straightener didn’t disappoint in testing. Panellists said it was “light to hold”, so your arms won’t get sore when styling your whole head, making getting ready a less stressful experience.

They also praised the tool's quality feel, sleek design and fast work, all of which are also true of the brand’s Blow hair dryer. The only niggle came from those with thicker, coarser hair who would have preferred chunkier plates.

The verdict: Which are the best hair straighteners?

The speedy styling and sleek-hair-enhancing capabilities of the ghd Chronos Max earned this new tool its place at the top of our list, and we think it deserves a spot on your dressing table too.

If you want to invest in the latest tech and take your styling seriously, opt for one of our joint wet-to-dry stylers. The Dyson Airstrait will transform your hair from wet to sleek fast and its auto-pause feature means you also won’t have to turn around mid-commute to check you haven’t burnt the house down. The ghd Duet Style is equally impressive, delivering shiny, straight lengths in half the time (minimising any heat damage).

But for a more affordable option that doesn’t skimp on performance, we recommend the Remington Wet2Straight styler. And, of course, you can’t go wrong with some classic ghds – the brand’s original styler is easy to use, heated up fast and gets the job done.

How do I choose a good hair straightener?

Straighteners are a big investment, so you need to make sure you’ve got all your hair needs covered in one tool before you make the commitment to buy. If you’re not sure what all those buzzwords mean on the side of the box, we’ve simplified them below, so you can figure out what to prioritise.

Variable temperature settings: this is useful if you’re planning on sharing your device. Lower heat suits fine hair best, while thick or coarse tresses may need more heat to be effective.

Ionic technology: when there’s too much positive charge on each hair strand, they begin to repel each other, making hair static and flyaway. This technology helps to neutralise the charge, smoothing strands down instead.

Ceramic plates: they are slower to warm up than other materials, but they distribute heat more evenly. They tend to be cheaper too, but are more prone to chipping.

Titanium/metal plates: these get very hot quickly but tend to be expensive. Improper usage can cause heat damage, too. We recommend leaving these hair straighteners on your locks for only a few seconds at a time.

Ceramic-coated plates: they usually have a metal base topped with a ceramic layer, combining the best qualities of both materials. The outer layer can chip and wear away over time, but a good-quality model should last you at least three years if stored properly.

Additional accessories: higher priced straighteners may come with accessories such as a heat mat, gloves and a travel case.

How do I know if I need a new pair of straighteners?

Your trusted pair of straighteners should last you between two to three years (depending on how well you look after them).

However, there are a few things to look out for if you’re worried your pair are on their way out.

Scratched plates: after a few years, you may start to notice scratches or even dents on the plates. This can lead to snagging (ouch) and means your hair is more likely to experience heat damage. Hair products can often sink into the dents too, which not only smells unpleasant, but won’t help your hair either.

Struggling to straighten hair: straighteners should get the job done quickly, but if you’re finding it takes longer than normal, it may mean the power has been compromised, which isn’t good for your hair or your plug sockets.

Irregular temperatures: taking longer to straighten your hair may also mean the temperature settings aren’t what they used to be. Failing to reach the max temperature might be kinder on your hair, but it won’t give you the silky-smooth results you're after.

What are tourmaline hair straighteners?

Hair straighteners with tourmaline plates contain the gem itself. It adds moisture and shine to your ends and leaves strands looking healthier and sleeker. However, it’s not the most durable material, and won’t last as long as titanium or ceramic plates.

Are titanium straighteners better than ceramic?

Hair straighteners may all look fairly similar, but the tech can vary. The big question is: ceramic or titanium plates?

While ceramic plates gradually heat up – making them a safer option for fine hair or those prone to damage – titanium will be your saviour if you’re in a rush, making them not only quick but effective at tackling thicker, more hard-to-style strands.

How to prevent damaging your hair

Hair is most fragile when it's wet, so make sure it’s completely dry before heat styling. Wet locks can only withstand temperatures of 40-60C, but dry (undamaged) hair can handle up to 185C. Always use the best heat protection spray, too.

How to curl your hair with straighteners

For many, this is a trick as old as time, yet one that seems hard to master. Luckily, our beauty team have written a full fool-proof guide on how to curl your hair with straighteners.

Can you take hair straighteners in hand luggage?

In short, yes! You can take them in hand luggage and in your hold luggage, should you wish. We recommend the ghd wet-to-dry or the Dyson if you want a multi-tasking tool (hair dryer and straightener) for your trip. We doubt you'll have the baggage allowance for both!
