The cord isn’t that long so you’ll need to place it close to a plug socket and it doesn’t have a bagel setting, so ours came out toasted on the back as well, but those are very minor niggles. With a handy high-lift feature for getting your toast out easily, a built-in crumb tray for fuss-free cleaning and adjustable slots for thicker slices, this is a great all-rounder.

Just like the ProCook model, this proved itself to be a great all-rounder for toasting everything from thick-slice farmhouse bread to fresh sourdough and bagels, barely dropping a mark in our batch-toasting tests.

It features seven browning settings with dedicated functions including Crispy Side and Small Bread, which means there are 21 different possible combinations to play with for achieving just the right level of toasted-ness. There’s a memory function too so once you’ve found that sweet spot, you’ll never lose it.

It’s on the expensive side and it struggled slightly with toasting frozen bread, taking longer than others we’ve tested. But when you take into account all the features offered, including a lift-and-look function and a hygienic anti-dust lid, it really is a great investment.

It also has minimal dirt traps and a removable crumb tray, to help with clean-up. Testers liked the anti-jamming function for easy toast extraction, too.

In our toast tests, slices browned evenly with good coverage and our bagels were ready in just two minutes. Note that the toaster walls took a little while to cool down after use.

Thanks to the retro design, it also looks the part – we’re fans of the pastel blue colourway for a pop of colour on your countertop.

It doesn’t have a bagel setting, but the wide slots mean it can accommodate a whole bagel with no need to slice it in half, and it didn’t come out of the toaster squashed either. It also has extra lift, so it’s easy to get your toast out without burning those fingers.

KitchenAid has a reputation for creating good-looking products, and this four-slice is no exception. It’s big and heavy, so you’ll need spare worktop space, but it boasts every bell and whistle in the book.

Our favourite design features include the sandwich setting (rack included) and clever sensor that automatically lowers your toast after 45 seconds and keeps it warm for three minutes – a saviour for those manic mornings.

There are seven browning levels to suit all tastes and an LED countdown timer for keeping an eye on its progress while attending to other chores. It could have been more consistent when toasting a single slice, especially in the right-hand slots, but it delivered delicious results from thick rustic bread and is a winner for big families.

It performed well in our tests, toasting everything from regular slices to thick, chunky farmhouse bread, and providing good colour and consistent browning on both sides. However, it only toasted two-thirds of a slice at a time due to its shallow slots, and the browning dial didn’t feel that sturdy. That said, for the price, this is a trusty buy.

For anyone who likes to experiment with a variety of different breads, this Breville model boasts extra-long slots and variable widths to accommodate everything from oversized slices of sourdough to crumpets and bagels.

Our testers found the central controls made the toaster easily accessible for both left and right-hand users; however, they weren’t the most responsive. Browning coverage was a little patchier when toasting vertically, too. However, it makes up for any inconsistencies with its speed – it took just over a minute for one slice – and stylish stainless-steel exterior.

It fared better when batch toasting, but its hefty power meant our testers achieved a golden brown shade on setting two but noted some burning on three, leaving limited options for those who like paler toast.

It toasted quickly (two and a half minutes max) and performed well, especially when batch toasting. Our tester also loved that each pair of slots could be set to different temperatures, meeting everyone’s demands.

The effective bagel setting is sure to prove popular, too – on test, it evenly browned the sliced sides and left the backs pillowy soft. Our only qualm is that, while the outer casing remains cool, the metal top gets hot, and there’s no extra lift function to keep your fingers safe.

This affordable two-slice looks more expensive than it is with its trendy metallic controls. It was speedy in action, taking under two and a half minutes to toast most of our slices, and it wowed our tester with its near-perfect performance when batch toasting.

Toast popped up evenly browned every time, with 100% coverage on each slice, thanks to an electronic temperature sensor, which ensures colour consistency. It proved similarly reliable when toasting bagels and thickly sliced farmhouse bread.

Our only complaint was that when toasting single slices, the inwards-facing sides came out much darker than the outer sides, but that’s an ideal excuse to indulge in two slices.

For reliability, it was difficult to fault this toaster. Slice after slice emerged with consistent browning and coverage; out of 20 slices of bread, only one differed. Testers saw similar results with thick-cut bread too – good news if you love a farmhouse loaf. And there’s even a handy lift-and-look function if you want to check on its progress mid-toasting.

There’s no bagel setting though, making it hard to get the right level of toastiness for those. But the wide slots meant they didn’t get squashed and removing them was simple. Just note that the primary slots are on the right side, so you can’t use the left slots on their own. But this quirk aside, our experts found the toaster enjoyable and intuitive to use.

The matching stainless-steel kettle and toaster from Procook claimed top spot in both our kettle and our toaster tests, making them a real stand-out buy. The kettle (which scored 94/100 in our best kettle roundup) has a 360-degree swivel base and ergonomically designed handle so pouring a cuppa is effortless. Plus, at its full 1.5-litre capacity, it only takes three minutes to boil – making it ideal for dinnertime too.

The matching toaster (92/100) is a two-slice model that provides consistently browned toast every time. Adjustable slots make it great for chunky farmhouse bread, too.

Compact, but with a decent 1.7L capacity, Salter’s kettle (87/100) is a good option if you don’t have much counter space. It’s packed full of fantastic features like a boil-dry sensor and an auto shut-off function, too.

A four-slice toaster (91/100) completes the matching set, and has adjustable slot sizes and a bagel setting, making it a real crowd pleaser come breakfast time.
