Can you use a beard trimmer for body hair?
For obvious reasons, using the same shaving tool for your face, body and pubic hair wouldn't be the most hygienic. Thankfully, most modern body groomers come with beard trimming attachments – a different head and different blade that simply clicks into place.
Body groomers are also designed to be gentler on skin, making them safer to use on delicate areas such as the armpits and groin. They also tend to come with a variety of angled blades and multi-length clippers for the most precise finish possible.
How to choose a body groomer
Firstly, consider what your chosen body groomer will be used for, as not all models cater for all zones of the body. Check the list of included attachments, so you know it will be up for the job.
Battery life is another important factor – you don't want to run out of charge mid-hair removal. Rechargeable devices are not only handy while travelling but they also tend to be more powerful than battery-operated options, meaning you can groom your whole body quickly and effectively in one go.
If shower shaves are on the cards, check that your favoured model is reliably waterproof. Wet grooming sessions are cleaner as the debris washes away immediately.
How do I maintain my beard?
The actual trimming and shaping of your chin hair is one thing, but maintenance is also key to keeping your beard in top notch condition. There are a few things you can do before and after trimming your facial hair to keep it looking fresh. Beforehand, we’d recommend giving it a good wash to remove any excess oil or debris (read: crumbs).
Make sure you’re getting deep into the hair; we suggest using your fingers to give your face a light exfoliation at the same time. You can use a regular facial cleanser to create a nice lather and give an extra deep clean.
After a good wash and trim, applying the best beard oil will help with styling and add some extra shine. Containing soothing ingredients such as aloe vera and castor seed oil, they will keep strays in check and help condition the skin underneath.
How we test
We asked 225 testers to try a range of body groomers over a two-week period, to find the best at tackling hair from head to toe. They judged each gadget on how easy it was to use, the quality of any attachments, its overall design and its performance, both when trimming and shaving body hair.
Back at the Good Housekeeping Institute, our expert team used a noise meter to give each device a rating out of five, based on how loud it is in use. We then collated all the feedback and scores to find our winners. Here are the tools that came out on top.
