The best memory foam mattresses for comfort and support

These mattresses will make you feel as if you’re sleeping on a cloud

A soft, sink-in mattress that cradles your body to lull you into a deep sleep...sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? And that’s why the best memory foam mattresses have gained such a huge reputation over the years.

Memory foam was developed in the 1960s by NASA-funded researchers who were looking for ways to keep test pilots well-cushioned during take off. The foam was designed to absorb shock and offer improved protection and comfort – to a level that’s out of this world.

Now, memory foam is used to create some of the top mattresses on the market. You’ll find designs made entirely of memory foam, ones with a memory foam ‘pillow-top’, or ones that combine foam with supportive pocket springs in a hybrid design that aims to give the best of both worlds.

All the mattresses in this roundup are made entirely of memory foam. We’ve gone into more detail about its pros and cons below, but if you’re keen to investigate hybrid options, check out the Good Housekeeping Institute's guide to the best hybrid mattresses, and if you decide the fabric's not for you, hop straight on over to our selection of the best pocket sprung mattresses.

If you’re already convinced by the benefits of memory foam, these are our top-rated memory foam mattresses at a glance but keep scrolling for a full guide to this innovative filling.

What are the benefits of memory foam mattresses?

First and foremost, sleep is subjective – what suits one person’s style doesn’t necessarily suit another's (hence the nightly ‘discussions’ between you and your partner about the room temperature.)

However, memory foam can be particularly beneficial to our sleep as it’s designed to relieve pressure points and support your body along the curves and natural alignment of your spine.

Along with easing pressure around those key areas, memory foam mattresses are typically firmer, which can provide better support for some.

Thanks to the dense material, they can also help reduce the amount of movement transferred across the sleep surface, which means you’re less likely to be disturbed when your partner tosses and turns at night.

If you're already a convert, we've found the best memory foam pillows too.

What things should you consider before buying?

While that sounds fantastic, it’s not all good news. Memory foam mattresses have earned a bit of a reputation over the last few years for being quite hot and causing poor temperature regulation.

This is because the dense foam structure can trap heat close to the body and limit air flow through the mattress, leaving people waking up sweaty and uncomfortable – not ideal for hot sleepers.

Another thing to note is that memory foam mattresses may not be best suited to elderly people or those with limited mobility as they typically have less edge-to-edge support than pocket sprung mattresses. If you need to sit on the edge of your mattress to steady yourself before getting up, the close contouring and sink-in sensation of a memory foam design may not provide enough stability.

This is also why hybrid mattresses have become so popular; they combine the luxurious contouring of foam with the added stability of pocket springs. Many of the GHI’s best mattresses fit into this category.

If you love that sink-in feeling when you lie down on your mattress though, there’s nothing better than memory foam. And the good news is that some designs come with a free trial offer, so it’s okay if you decide it’s not for you (we’ve included info on free trials in the specs below).

How we choose the best memory foam mattresses

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we’ve rigorously reviewed hundreds of sleep products (you only have to take one look at our inaugural sleep awards to see the breadth of testing we do), and between our expert testers and our writers, we have tried all the best products and latest innovations on the market.

We’ve used all of this expertise and scoured the offerings from our top-rated sleep brands to bring you a selection of memory foam mattresses we believe will deliver a quality night’s sleep.

As always, there won’t be a one-size-fits-all solution so we recommend trying out your preferred mattress before buying if you can, or making use of the free sleep trials that many brands offer.

Good for adjustability

Eve the wunderflip memory foam mattress

the wunderflip memory foam mattress

The clue is in the name of this mattress...It has two sides of memory foam (one firm, one extra firm) and you can flip it to sleep on whichever side you prefer – very clever!

It’s simple to do, too. Just unzip the top layer, flip the mattress, and re-zip the comfort layer back on. You’ll need a friend to help you turn the mattress over as it’s a weighty design but it’s perfect for indecisive sleepers or for a guest room so people can adjust the mattress to their own preferences.
