12 best sofa beds that you'll actually want to sit and sleep on

Here ends the sofa bed's bad rap

Good Housekeeping

Sofa beds are one of life’s tricky purchases. Like any multitasker, there’s a lot to consider – whether it will fit through your doorway is just question number one. In fact, they make shopping for the best regular sofa seem easy in comparison!

In your hunt for the best sofa bed, you need to weigh up whether it will meet your comfort requirements both during the day and when you lie down at night. And let's be honest, sofa beds don't have the greatest reputation. They struggle to measure up to the best mattress and best bed frame combo and they're often viewed as a last-resort option.

Looking for a great value buy? We recommend the Dreams 3-Seater Clic-Clac Sofa Bed (£899), which is stylish and easy to set up. Or look to the Made.com Haru 2-Seater Sofa Bed (£450) for smaller spaces.

But you shouldn't compromise, and the good news is that more and more sofa bed brands are factoring this into their designs. Some mattress manufacturers (like Emma) have even ventured into the market.

There is, however, a lot to think about, including how it operates as a bed and how easy it is to pull out and set up – especially if you're going to be using it regularly.

While we can’t pick which colour will work for your living room (which is the fun bit anyway), here at the Good Housekeeping Institute, we can help with the comfort and durability questions. We put a range of leading furniture brands to the test, to find the best for every need. Find our full reviews and buying guide below.

How we test sofa beds

Reviewing sofa beds is a team effort at the Good Housekeeping Institute. Our experts assess each one in our testing facility, judging ease of assembly, the transition between sofa and bed, and quality of instructions.

Then it’s time to see how well made it is. Our experts imitate a pet (not literally!) and scratch each sofa bed over 500 times, looking to see if it sustains any damage. They also test the fabric, staining it with common household spills like coffee, wine, mud and makeup. After 24 hours, they see how easy it is to clean – this is particularly important as all the sofa beds we tested were spot clean only.

They test whether the cushions absorb water spillages or if they repel it. And they leave weights on the cushions, before timing how quickly they bounce back into shape when removed.

We don’t forget about comfort either – our testers take it in turns putting their feet up and providing feedback.

Of course, we don’t make the team stay in the lab overnight, so we also send each sofa bed out to testers’ homes. There, our panellists swap their bedroom for the living room for a few nights, and tell us about their experience. We also ask them about how they found set-up, sitting on the sofa, and its overall design.

These are the ones you'll actually want to sit and sleep on.

Swyft Model 04 3 Seater Sofa Bed

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Model 04 3 Seater Sofa Bed

Pros

  • Quick to set-up initially and easy to convert from sofa to bed
  • Our panel raved about its comfort
  • Water-repellant fabric meant it had generally good stain removal in the lab, even with red wine – just watch makeup as this was more stubborn

Cons

  • Spot clean only (most are)
  • More comfortable with two people sat on it than three

Score: 88/100

Everyone who tried this velvet sofa bed said they would recommend it to others – one even said that some friends who'd slept on it for a night then went and bought it for their own home. Testers declared it “high quality” and so comfortable that one of them said they regularly fell asleep on it.

In fact, there was little they disliked. It fared well in our stain resistance tests, didn’t scratch when we replicated the impact of having a pet at home, and the plump cushions bounced back well after our weight tests.

Even the build and ease of use were hard to fault – everything arrives in boxes that should fit through your door frame, all the instructions are clear, and its fold-out frame slotted into place seamlessly.

While it’s designed for three people, it would be roomier with just two on it, but even that wouldn’t be a downside if you’re investing in a sofa for a smaller household or to sit alongside another. And for extra peace of mind, it comes with a 100-day trial.

Loaf Jonesy Love Seat Sofa Bed

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Jonesy Love Seat Sofa Bed

Pros

  • Plush, plump cushions
  • A wide range of fabrics to match your interiors
  • Simple set-up process

Cons

  • Some testers wished the soft armrests were slightly more supportive
  • Heavy to move

Score: 85/100

“You’d never know it was a sofa bed at first glance,” was just one of the positive comments we got on this stylish Love Seat. We tried the plush velvet design, but there are hundreds (yes, really!) of fabrics and shades to choose from. It’s designed for two people to sit on and folds out easily and quickly into a generous single bed. Good looks aside, it was super comfy to sit on, especially compared to other sofa beds our panellists had tried before.

In our lab tests, we used warm, soapy water and a damp cloth to clean stains and most (including red wine and coffee) lifted with no issues; however, foundation marks proved a little trickier to clean. Overall, though, it’s an extremely chic design – perfect for curling up on to watch TV and remaining there for the rest of the night.

Sofa.com Isla Sofa Bed

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Isla Sofa Bed

Pros

  • Fabric felt comfortable against the skin
  • Cushions are very plump and easy to fluff up

Cons

  • Quite deep as a sofa so not ideal for those with short legs
  • It’s a little tight for two adults to sleep on comfortably

Score: 83/100

This traditional-style sofa bed is made to order, with the flexibility to change the size, colour (there are 109 to choose from across the different fabrics), legs, and mattress type (either foam or spring). We should note, however, that the level of customisation meant it took around two months to arrive from the order date, so make sure you’re planning ahead.

When it did arrive, the delivery team was super helpful, setting the sofa bed up and demonstrating how to pull it out – a process our tester also found easy to do when left alone.

It was at bedtime that this sofa bed really excelled though. “I’ve never slept on a better made sofa bed,” said our tester, adding that it felt “as good as sleeping in a regular bed.” A rave review.

It didn’t scratch either and most stains lifted with warm soapy water. It is very absorbent, though, so you’ll need to give it a while to dry after cleaning or if you spill anything on it.

Best corner sofa bed

Cocoon Ashley Corner Sofa Bed

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Ashley Corner Sofa Bed

Pros

  • Generous size with built-in storage and option to choose right- or left-hand configuration
  • Easy to convert into a bed
  • Testers were impressed with its resistance to scratching and water spillages

Cons

  • Set-up lengthier than some designs but the brand will also build it for you if this is a concern
  • Trickier stains like foundation, lipstick and oil were hard to remove

Score: 83/100

This L-shaped sofa bed is made for lounging. It could easily be your main seating, it’s that roomy and comfortable. And guests will be happy too – when opened out (which was simple to do on test), it’s a king size bed. Testers liked the firm feel of the mattress and said it left them feeling well-rested come morning.

Like our winner, it’s modular so it arrives in boxes, and while it wasn’t the quickest to build for everyone (it took about an hour), it was still “intuitive”. There’s even some built-in storage and if you damage one section, you can replace just that component to keep your sofa in tip-top shape for years to come.

Based on our lab testing, that won’t happen any time soon anyway – cushions bounced back quickly, and our testers were able to clean away most traces of typical household stains, including red wine, coffee and biro scribbles. Mud, mustard and makeup were largely eradicated too, but depending on the colour you opt for, it could be trickier to restore the fabric fully.

Oh, and it scored full marks for its resistance to pet scratches, and our testers simply watched as water spillages ran off the cushion. It’s a quality buy.

Best clic-clac sofa bed

Dreams Gallway 3-Seater Clic-Clac Sofa Bed

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Gallway 3-Seater Clic-Clac Sofa Bed

Pros

  • Simple to assemble and switch between set-ups
  • Very soft velvety fabric generally wiped clean well
  • Comfortable to sleep on

Cons

  • Firmer sofa cushions may not suit everyone and were a little narrow for some testers
  • Not very water resistant, so take care to avoid spillages – although red wine was cleaned with ease

Score: 82/100

Clic-clac sofa beds are quick and easy to set up, and work well in tighter spaces. This one was no exception – it took testers about 15 minutes to put it up after they unboxed it and swapping between sofa and bed was done in a jiffy. It was comfortably supportive to sleep on too (as we’d hoped, given this is from a slumber specialist).

That said, because of its firmer design, it’s not the best sofa for lounging on – there’s plenty of room for three people, you just won’t quite sink into it. If that’s to your taste, though, you’ll be pleased to hear that the velvety fabric impressed in our stain removal tests – although our spilt glass of water left a slight mark, red wine proved no trouble to banish, making it a good one for day-to-day use.

DFS Orka Large 2-Seater Deluxe Sofa Bed

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Orka Large 2-Seater Deluxe Sofa Bed

Pros

  • Moisture-resistant
  • Pre-made so no assembly needed
  • Comfortable, especially as a sofa

Cons

  • Not everyone rated it as a bed
  • Mixed performance in the stain removal tests
  • Slouchy feel not to everyone’s taste

Score: 81/100

At first glance, thanks to its classic design, you certainly wouldn’t suspect there’s a mattress tucked away within this sofa. But trust us, there is one there! In all honesty, the bed itself received mixed reviews with our panel, but if you just need it for the odd night here and there, this shouldn’t prove too troublesome – plus, you can transform it in seconds.

And as a sofa, this one was well rated. It arrives in one piece (so you will need to measure your doorframes this time), and our experts were impressed with its overall quality; it repelled moisture well when we poured water, tea, coffee and wine on it, and our scratch tests didn’t leave a mark. Food and makeup stains were largely easy to wipe away, and both its cushions and mattress bounced back into shape after testing too.

As for what it’s like to sit on, we’ll leave you with words from one of our testers who described it as a “comfortable sofa with nice squashy cushions.” Delightful.

Best value corner sofa bed

Ikea FRIHETEN Corner Sofa Bed With Storage

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
FRIHETEN Corner Sofa Bed With Storage

Pros

  • Built-in storage
  • Spacious seating
  • Easy to switch between sofa and bed

Cons

  • Assembly not the quickest
  • Hard to remove some tricky stains, and cushions absorbed more water than others
  • Firmer design not to everyone’s taste

Score: 78/100

You can always rely on Ikea for a box-ticker, and this roomy corner sofa is no exception. It has built-in storage, transitions easily into a bed and proved durable on test, with cushions bouncing back and scratches causing no damage.

It took a while to build, and some testers found it a bit confusing, mainly because you can choose which side you configure the L on. But ultimately this means it will work for every home, so it’s worth powering through that bit.

It cleaned up respectably but wasn’t the best in test – curry sauce was hard to fully eradicate (so be careful if it’s TV dinner night), and you’ll need to watch makeup and drinks too as it absorbed some water, rather than repelling it fully.

Our panel was pleased with this sofa bed though– while it’s relatively firm, it was comfortable both to sit on and sleep on. As you’d expect from the brand, it’s more affordable than many, and it even comes with a 10-year guarantee. Don’t forget to tuck into some Swedish meatballs for us when you go to pick this one up!

Best sofa bed for small spaces

Made Haru Small Sofa Bed

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Haru Small Sofa Bed

Pros

  • Great for smaller rooms
  • Velvet fabric cleaned up well
  • Quick and easy to set-up

Cons

  • Lack of arm rests means it’s not the comfiest design if you’re after a main sofa
  • Low to the ground
  • Velvet fabric can get dusty

Score: 77/100

If you’re fitting out a spare room or home office, this sofa bed would be perfect. It assembles in just 15 minutes, and while the compact design isn’t the best for lounging on in the evenings (there are no arm rests), it’s wide enough to seat two people. The sink-in seats were a hit with our testers and bounced back into shape swiftly after we tested them for indentations too. So, if you want to sit there from time to time, you’re not compromising on comfort.

Then, when you’ve got a guest, it folds out into a bed in no time. It’s lightweight if you need to reposition it, and while it sits low to the ground, testers found it stable. One even said they enjoyed “excellent sleep” on its firmer surface. However you plan to use it though, our experts were pleased with its stain and scratch resistance in the lab.

And of course, it oozes that mid-century style Made is known for, proving that you can get a sofa bed that ticks the all-important design box.

How to choose a sofa bed

Each type of sofa bed uses different mechanisms, so it's important to find a design that suits your requirements. If you're working with a larger room, you'll be able to experiment a bit more with corner and clic-clac sofa beds, while A-frames and storage sofa beds work best for smaller spaces. Here's a rundown of the different designs available.

Clic-clac sofa beds

You'll need space behind a clic-clac design, as you have to pull it out and then push down the back to create a flat surface. If you're going to be using it as a bed regularly, you'll likely want something lighter and more portable, but this is a good pick if you plan on turning your living room sofa into a bed every now and then.

3-fold roll out sofa beds

3-fold roll outs store a mattress beneath their seat cushions, which can be rolled out as and when you need it. This mechanism works for all sizes of sofa and is an easy way of creating a sleep space quickly.

A-frame sofa beds

Here, you unfold the seat cushion to extend your sofa into a bed. These work best as a smaller or more portable sofa or futon, as opposed to your main living room sofa.

Storage sofa beds

Ideal for those who need more storage space, these sofa beds work brilliantly in living rooms and studies for stashing away bits and bobs that don't have a specific place: your best bed sheets and duvet covers, board games, DVDs, or even the vacuum cleaner.

Pull-out and lift-up sofa beds

These designs are often used for corner and storage sofas. Simply pull the bed out and up to create your sleep space. Thanks to how easy they are to operate, they work pretty well for any room and size.

Corner sofa beds

Corner sofa beds are commonly used in living rooms, because they work well as everyday family sofas too. Simply pull out your bed from the bottom when needed, filling the gap in the 'L' design.

The verdict on sofa beds

There’s no doubt about it from our testing that the Swyft Model 04 Large 3-Seater is the best sofa bed if you have the budget – testers found it comfortable for sitting and sleeping on, and it looks timeless.

If you’re after a corner sofa, then Cocoon’s Ashley Sofa Bed is a quality investment that also aced our testing at home and in the lab. But, in terms of size and price, our winner and runner-up are both what we'd class as living room sofa beds.

For a spare room, Made’s Haru Small Sofa Bed is compact and more affordable while still comfortable enough for one-off sleepovers.
