Which is the best Dyson vacuum?

Fantastic performance, great design and a powerful design are all features we've come to expect from a Dyson vacuum, but which one is the best value buy?

As with anything, the best product for you comes down to your individual needs and lifestyle. You may want a Dyson with a speedy charging time (like the Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute) so you can get hoovering as soon as possible, or you may prefer one with a large capacity, such as the Dyson V11 Outsize, so you don’t have to empty the vacuum as often. Or perhaps you just want a robot to do it all for you?

What you’ll notice about the Dyson products below is that they’re all cordless. This is because the company announced it was focusing on smaller, battery-powered models in 2018 and has since stopped developing new corded vacuum models. Cordless vacuums are light, convenient and mean you don’t have to keep stopping to switch power outlets as you move round the house.

Best Dyson cordless stick vacuums

The Dyson Gen5detect is our current overall best buy (a joint winner alongside the Samsung Bespoke Jet Pro Extra). But if you don’t want to splash out on the latest tech, there are plenty of other Dyson models that still offer great performance, at slightly lower price tags. Check out our experts' top-rated picks below to find the right one for your household.

Gen5detect™ Absolute Cordless Vacuum Cleaner
Dyson Gen5detect™ Absolute Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

Pros

  • Longest Dyson run time (up to 70 minutes)
  • Slim design is easier to store
  • Relatively quiet

Cons

  • Eco setting only effective on hard floors
  • When cleaning with boost mode, battery only lasted for 15 minutes

Score: 97/100

The newest edition to Dyson’s stick vacuum line up, the Gen5detect is claimed to be its most powerful yet, adjusting its suction according to what its cleaning. And it showed on test; all the debris our experts laid, including pet hair, vanished swiftly from carpets and hard floors.

It has an informative LCD screen, head lights for highlighting dirt traps, and it’s easy to set-up and use. However, weighing 3.5kg, it’s not the lightest vacuum out there, and our testers found it heavy when using it as a handheld vac.

V11 Total Clean Cordless Vacuum Cleaner
Dyson V11 Total Clean Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

Pros

  • Vacuum is light (3kg) and well balanced
  • One button gives access to all the information you need (mode, runtime, battery life)
  • Dust canister and filters were easy to remove and refit

Cons

  • Tools can’t be stored on board
  • Only lasts around 15 minutes on boost mode

Score: 96/100

Dyson’s V11 is an impressive multitasker with eight different attachments to cover all your day-to-day cleaning needs. It won’t surprise then that it aced nearly every single test, from picking up dust to banishing biscuit crumbs. It only faltered with pet hair; it performed well, but a few strands escaped its pull to linger on our carpet.

To operate the vacuum, you must hold the trigger button down constantly, which can be tiresome during lengthier cleans. But everything else was easy to use and the battery lasted nearly an hour on eco mode, giving you plenty of time to freshen up your floors.

V10 Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner
Dyson V10 Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner
Now 10% Off

Pros

  • Picks up pet hair in one sweep without tangling
  • Easy to assemble and emptying is mess-free
  • Well-positioned battery-life indicators

Cons

  • Mini Motorised Tool struggled to lift crumbs
  • Handle warmed after continuous use

Score: 95/100

This is lighter than our winning Dyson (at 2.68kg), so it was easy to manoeuvre and control, both as a handheld and stick vacuum. This means it’s better suited to reaching awkward spots. Its pick-up was impressive too, scoring full marks across the board.

While the price is slightly lower than some of the other Dyson vacuums, you do have less battery life – testers found its max power setting drained the battery in eight minutes, and a recharge takes three and a half hours. That niggle aside, whether attaching its crevice tool or emptying the canister, it’s a delight to use.

V15 Detect Absolute Cordless Vacuum
Dyson V15 Detect Absolute Cordless Vacuum
Now 23% Off

Pros

  • Three power levels
  • Lots of helpful tools
  • Clear battery life indicator

Cons

  • Fairly heavy
  • Lasers only work on hard floors

Score: 92/100

Designed to detect microscopic dust, we expected this stick vacuum to excel with pick-up – and we certainly weren’t disappointed. It aced our cleaning tests, even when dealing with tricky pet hair.

Like the Gen5detect, it shows you what’s been picked up on its LCD display. Our testers liked the lasers that illuminate dust as you go, even if this didn’t have a huge impact on the overall cleaning experience. And the suction was almost too powerful for our long pile carpets, which made them hard work to clean – we'd recommend using the eco mode for that surface. Otherwise, it moved smoothly and was intuitive to use.

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
V12 Detect Slim Absolute Vacuum
Dyson V12 Detect Slim Absolute Vacuum

Pros

  • Three power modes including an eco-mode, which will prolong battery life
  • Easy to use
  • Good with pet hair

Cons

  • Slightly bulky around the handle

Score: 89/100

This is the lightest Dyson stick vacuum on our list at just 2.2kg, so if maximum portability is your priority, this will serve you well. Like the others, it has a nifty light-up floorhead to illuminate dirt, so you can catch every last speck. It also has the same informative LCD screen, which updates you on run time and the particles being sucked-up.

Our testers noted that it struggled when cleaning long pile carpets, but otherwise its pick-up was excellent.

Best of the rest: Dyson robots, uprights and more

It’s true that these days Dyson is best known for its stick vacuums, but it also boasts some trusty upright vacuums if you need a bigger capacity, and even a robot vacuum, if you don't want to lift a finger. Here's our experts' best of the rest.

Best Dyson robot vacuum

360 Vis Nav™ robot vacuum
Dyson 360 Vis Nav™ robot vacuum
Credit: Dyson

Pros

  • Easy to empty
  • Compatible with an informative app that shows where it has cleaned
  • Didn’t get caught up in any table legs or furniture

Cons

  • Battery only lasts for about two rooms before it must dock to recharge
  • Instructions could be more detailed, but there are videos on YouTube

Score: 95/100

If you're looking to splurge on a robot vacuum, this Dyson was our top-performer on test. It's simple to set up and mapped our rooms easily, negotiating 'no-go' areas and ferrying around with no problems. When it's finished cleaning, it will return to its compact docking station to recharge (although you will have to empty it yourself).

It’s not short on suction power either. Pick-up on both carpet and hard flooring was excellent, although it struggled to get right into the corners. Overall, though, it’s efficient and well designed.

Omni-Glide
Dyson Omni-Glide

Pros

  • Great manoeuvrability
  • Lightweight
  • Good for cleaning under furniture

Cons

  • Short run time of up to 20 minutes – but just five on max
  • Smaller dust canister may require more frequent emptying

Score: 92/100

The Omni Glide is one of the most affordable Dyson vacuums we’ve tested and is specially engineered for tackling hard floors. It boasts a fluffy cleaner head that turns on 360-degree rollers to clean in all directions – forwards, backwards and even sideways.

This clever design meant the vacuum easily removed dust from our floorboards, scoring a perfect 10/10.

V15s Detect Submarine
Dyson V15s Detect Submarine
Now 19% Off

Pros

  • Controls are intuitive and responsive
  • Easy to clean the mop roller
  • Has an informative LCD screen

Cons

  • Left the floor slightly damp after use
  • Suction was a tad too strong at times, blowing larger debris away

Score: 89/100

Packed full of the latest tech, Dyson’s newest release works wet and dry, meaning you can vacuum your carpets then mop any hard flooring. It has the same powerful suction as the V15 vacuum above but comes with an additional mop head that washes floors instead of sucking up debris when attached.

It put in an excellent performance in both our vacuuming and mopping tests, only needing a few passes to do the job. Note that a puddle tended to form around the head of the mop when left, so it’s worth cleaning up quickly. But this is a smart multi-tasker.

Ball™ Animal
Dyson Ball™ Animal
Now 18% Off

Pros

  • Large 1.15-litre dust bin
  • Lightweight and easy to manoeuvre
  • Reaches under furniture well

Cons

  • Struggled with edge cleaning

Score: 86/100

It may not be cordless but with a ten-metre-long lead, you won't have to worry too much about where your nearest plug socket is. Plus, you’re not at risk of running out of battery mid-clean, either.

Suction on short pile carpet and hard floors was excellent, but it struggled on long pile, removing just 79% of the debris we'd laid down. It removed pet hair without any tangling though and has a wide array of tools to help with cleaning. One for big homes.

The best Dyson air purifiers, tower fans and heaters

As we become increasingly aware of the importance of good air quality, more and more of us have turned to air purifiers for help in reducing pollutants in our homes. Indeed, according to Dyson’s own Global Air Quality Connected Data report, the UK experienced worse air quality indoors than outside for 11 out of 12 months in 2022, with everything from wood burners, gas cooking, pollen, pet fur and dust contributing to higher pollution levels. That's where air purifiers come in, using high-quality filters to remove pollutants.

Dyson’s air treatment products include a range of purifiers, humidifiers, fans and heaters, as well as some devices that combine functions to tackle several jobs at once. Shop all our tried and tested air products below.

Big+Quiet Formaldehyde Air Purifier
Dyson Big+Quiet Formaldehyde Air Purifier
Now 11% Off

Pros

  • Concealed wheels make it easy to move
  • Quiet, even at night
  • Adjustable air flow

Cons

  • Bulky
  • Expensive

Score: 98/100

The sleek Big+Quiet purifier was hard to fault in testing. It removed dust and pollutants from the room quickly, filtering out almost all deodorant particles in 40 minutes. If you want to get geeky about what you’re breathing, the accompanying app reports the type and levels of particles in the air too. It’s easy to use and intuitively designed too.

Pros

  • Adjustable airflow with 10 speed settings and 350 degree oscillation
  • Easy set-up
  • Accompanying app

Cons

  • Noisy at higher speeds
  • No information on filter maintenance or replacements

This is an impressive triple threat – it’s an air purifier (scoring 93/100 in that dedicated test), tower fan (86/100), and electric heater (77/100). We’ve tested all three functions, and as you can see from the scores it's an excellent air purifier and tower fan. It was good as an electric heater too, projecting heat well – it just wasn’t as quiet as some.

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Humidify+Cool PH04 Air Purifier
Dyson Humidify+Cool PH04 Air Purifier

Pros

  • Filters trap and breaks down formaldehyde molecules
  • Straightforward to use, and compatible with MyDyson app

Cons

  • Noisy on higher settings
  • Heavy

Score: 93/100

This is our best-in-test tower fan and just like the model above, it's multi-purpose. It also works as an air purifier and it humidifies too.

Our experts liked its powerful maximum airflow, easy-to-use control panel and modern design that won’t interfere with your home aesthetics. Its 10 speed settings kept our testers cool, and it has a night mode for a comfortable, peaceful sleep.

Dyson lighting

In 2020, Dyson entered the lighting market with its Solarcycle Morph. It’s a lamp that tracks natural daylight and intelligently adapts light levels to align with your surroundings. It’s available as a floor and a desk lamp, but is it worth the investment? The Good Housekeeping Institute reviewed it to find out.

Solarcycle Morph™ desk
Dyson Solarcycle Morph™ desk
Now 20% Off

Pros

  • Has onboard USB-C charging
  • LED light should last for up to 60 years

Cons

  • Base is bulky and heavy, taking up lots of desk space
  • Lamp arm felt quite delicate when repositioning

Score: 85/100

When we tested this, we focused on its functionality as a sunrise light. It has a wake-up mode that can be programmed in the MyDyson app to turn on at a set time and gradually brighten over a half hour period, for a gentler start to your day. To fully remove the fear of oversleeping, we’d have liked some natural sounds or alarm capabilities as you get with other sunrise alarms (although that’s being picky, and it doesn’t claim to be an alarm).

Testers still liked the setting, and you essentially get four lights in one, including a task light for reducing eye strain when working, and an ambient mode with reduced blue light to help you switch off in the evenings. There are even sensors that turn the light off after five minutes if they don't detect any motion – clever and energy saving if you often forget to turn off the lights!

The fact that it automatically adjusts its light levels every 60 seconds to best suit the time of day, emulating natural daylight, is another huge win if you’re often stuck inside and struggle with productivity. However, the price bursts our happy bubble a little, as it’s certainly an investment piece.

Overall, testers were impressed – the product is easy to assemble and use (both physically and on the app), and they thoroughly enjoyed the range of functions and brightness levels.

Dyson hair care: Airwraps, Dyson hair dryers and more

In 2016, Dyson took the leap into hair care and we’re oh-so-glad it did. Now with a range of hair dryers, straighteners, and multi-purpose stylers, Dyson has certainly got its grips on the beauty world.

But the premium price tags can make shopping Dyson’s range of hair care products daunting. Luckily, our Good Housekeeping Institute experts love trialling the latest launches – here’s their verdict on what's worth a spot on your dressing table.

Best Dyson wet-to-dry straightener
UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Airstrait™ straightener
Dyson Airstrait™ straightener

Pros

  • Uses concentrated air flow to straighten hair instead of heated ceramic plates, reducing hair damage
  • Very easy to use
  • Heated up quickly

Cons

  • Chunkier than others so not the best for travelling with
  • The wide panels mean fringes and short hair are trickier to style

Score: 92/100

Wet-to-dry styling tools are the latest innovation in the beauty gadget sphere and the Dyson Airstrait didn't disappoint, taking one tester's hair from sopping to super sleek in under eight minutes. It also uses a powerful, targeted air flow rather than heated plates, to minimise damage.

One of the features that impressed the most was that they automatically switch off when you put them down, which means no burnt carpet or catastrophising that you've left them on while you're out and about.

Supersonic Nural™ hair dryer
Dyson Supersonic Nural™ hair dryer

Pros

  • Two-year guarantee
  • Attachments are all magnetic and easy to add on
  • Left hair beautifully shiny

Cons

  • Lots of attachments, which may be confusing for some

Score: 85/100

Dyson’s newest hair dryer was declared “the best hair dryer I’ve ever used” by one of our testers, which is probably all we need to say. It boasts a scalp sensor that automatically adjusts the temperature whenever the tool gets close to your hairline, to avoid any burning or damage to the roots. Plus, it made fast work of drying thick hair, while smoothing any flyaways.

The handle wasn’t the comfiest to hold but its lightweight design ensures there shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Supersonic Hair Dryer

Pros

  • Quick at drying
  • Left hair feeling softer
  • Gave hair lasting body and volume

Cons

  • Motor has a high-pitched sound
  • Control indicator lights could be clearer

Score: 82/100

It’s the hair dryer that broke the internet when it was first launched and, upon testing, it was clear to see why. Our panel loved how efficiently it got the job done – heating up well without roasting our hair.

Obviously, it's an investment buy, but its stellar performance is undeniable. In fact, every tester said they’d replace their current hair dryer with this Dyson.

Dyson Corrale™ Straightener Exclusive Edition (copper)

Pros

  • Elegant design
  • Plays a sound when it's preheated to the selected temperature
  • Styles hair efficiently and effectively

Cons

  • Heavier than normal straighteners

Score: 80/100

Bringing the joy of cordless appliances to hair care, the Dyson Corrale straighteners earned plenty of brownie points from our testers. There are three heat settings (160 to 210C) and they straightened hair with a single stroke.

Plus, this tool is packed full of handy features including an OLED screen that provides handy information on battery life and temperature. It also comes with a charging stand and heat-resistant travel pouch.

  • Easy to set up
  • Comfortable to use and didn't feel too hot for testers

Cons

  • No styling tips included in instructions
  • Attachments are large so tricky to travel with

Score: 76/100

The beauty equivalent of Dyson’s multi-purpose fans, the Airwrap dries, smooths and styles hair. All our testers said it created their desired style effortlessly, without having to go over each area multiple times.

It comes with six styling attachments that are suitable for a range of hair types including the Coanda smoothing dryer, which claims to reduce frizz and flyaways by up to 58%. It boosted shine and volume too.
