best sunrise alarm clock

Dragging yourself out of bed when it’s dark and dreary outside is tough (read: nigh on impossible some days), particularly when your bed is so warm and cosy.

Being rudely awakened by your smartphone's annoying ringtone doesn’t help either. It can be enough to put anyone in a bad mood – and that’s before you face a day of meetings, train delays, and trying to tick off everything on your to-do list.

But there is another way. The best sunrise alarm clocks offer a gentler start to your day. The clever gadgets wake you up gradually by simulating a sunrise, filling your room with warm, golden light (and maybe the peaceful chirp of a bird or two) to create a far less jarring wake-up call.

Need more convincing? As a homes writer, I've tried a lot of the best sleep gadgets in my time, and my sunrise alarm clock may be one of my favourites, helping me wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day head on.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we wanted to see which models were worth the investment, so we tested a range of the leading models, both in the lab and at home. Keep scrolling to read our full reviews, but here are our experts’ top-rated picks at a glance:

Best sunrise alarm clocks 2025

If you’re replacing an existing sunrise alarm clock or are upgrading your traditional alarm for one of these, there are plenty of places for you to safely recycle your old one. Find your nearest electrical recycling point, or read our guide on how to donate or dispose of your appliances and tech for extra guidance.

What kind of morning alarm is best?

While the best alarm for waking up in the morning is largely subjective, it’s no surprise that a gradual awakening is better for us than being jolted out of bed in the morning.

According to medical reviewer Dr Chester Wu, who is double board certified in psychiatry and sleep medicine, the combination of light and sound offered by a sunrise alarm will cater to many different preferences.

“There’s evidence that lower frequency alarm sounds are more effective at waking us up and reducing sleep inertia compared to higher frequency sounds, while pleasant, familiar musical alarms can improve our mood and make us less likely to press snooze,” he explains.

Should you buy a sunrise alarm clock?

If the sound of your alarm ringtone is enough to send a shiver down your spine, it may be time to treat yourself to an upgrade. By gentling simulating the rising of the sun, sunrise alarms can slowly rouse you from sleep, potentially making it much easier to wake up in the morning.

According to Dr Wu, the simulation of a “natural dawn” can help regulate our body clocks, so we feel less groggy when we wake up. “Morning light exposure suppresses melatonin production and kickstarts other physiological processes that make us feel more alert and keep our sleep-wake cycle on track,” he explains.

While they may be on the pricier side, sunrise alarm clocks can also help you manage conditions such as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Sometimes known as “the winter blues”, SAD is a mental health condition that affects more than two million people across the UK during winter when daylight hours are shortened. Using light boxes or sunrise alarms is recommended as a form of therapy that can help to ease depressive symptoms, literally brightening up your day.

And not only do they help you wake up gently in the morning, but many can also help improve your wind-down routine by simulating a sunset and using soothing sounds to create a relaxing environment for sleep.

What features should you look for in a sunrise alarm?

Before you add to basket, there are a few factors to consider.

Size: You’ll want an alarm that will fit comfortably on your bedside table. If you travel a lot and would like to take your alarm with you, you may also want to consider a more compact, lightweight model.

Adjustable sunrise times: How gradual do you want your wake-up call to be? Some of the alarms on our list can start increasing the level of brightness in your room from as much as 90 minutes before you want to get up.

Wireless: If you don’t want to be tied to a plug, look for a wireless option, such as the Lexon Mina Sunrise Alarm on our list below. These are also good for frequent travellers.

Brightness and colour options: Most sunrise alarms will have a choice of brightness settings and colour hues. Brightness is measured in lux, with the typical level for a natural sunrise being around 400. The higher the lux, the brighter the alarm can go. Adjustable colour hues are also good for those who like a night light or reading light, with orange and red tones best for minimising sleep disruption.

Sound: All the alarms on our list also offer the choice of using sound to wake you up, with some boasting up to 15 different options, from purring kittens to white noise.

Bonus features: Many of the products we tested also double up as an FM radio, mood light, a reading lamp, and even Bluetooth speakers, adding a whole new element to your sleep set-up.

How we test

We recruited a panel of 21 testers to trial each alarm over two weeks. We then asked them to give detailed feedback on design, ease of use and range of light settings, sounds and features available, as well as telling us how the alarm affected their sleep routine overall.

But we didn’t stop there – we also put the alarms to the test in the Good Housekeeping Institute lab. Our experts scored each one on how reliable it was in real-life scenarios, from stumbling for the snooze button in the dark to creating the perfect pre-snooze mood lighting. We also considered looks and the quality of instructions provided, before combining all our findings into a final score.

These are our top-rated picks to transform your mornings.

Best sunrise alarm clock

Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
SmartSleep Wake-up Light

Pros

  • User-friendly manual for easy set-up
  • Sounds were soft but had clear definition

Cons

  • Can’t set separate alarms for weekdays and weekends

Score: 92/100

Our winning alarm clock provided the ultimate wind-down/wake-up routine for our testers, thanks to its gentle sunrise and sunset simulations. Our panel liked the sleek design, the responsive controls that make it easy to cycle through the 20 different levels of light intensity and volume, and the wide range of sleep sounds. The sunset simulation is a particular highlight, gradually reducing the alarm’s brightness and helping you wind down before bed.

Our testers were also big fans of the ‘midnight function’, which is designed to provide just the right amount of light to allow you to move around in the dark without disturbing a partner. Simply tap twice on the top of the device to activate.

It is the most expensive model on our list and it’s fairly bulky, so you’ll need a good amount of space on your bedside table. However, this is a premium device that lets you personalise your wake-up call. Plus, it has a handy USB for charging your phone or smartwatch.

Runner-up sunrise alarm clock

Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300

Bodyclock Shine 300

Pros

  • You can save radio channels to make them easy to find without having to go through the entire menu
  • Easy to switch between sounds and light modes for a personalised experience

Cons

  • No troubleshooting guide

Score: 91/100

Coming in just behind the Philips alarm is the Lumie Bodyclock Shine. This alarm is a real multi-tasker, featuring everything from a traditional FM radio to a fancy sunset mode, and doubling up as a reading lamp. Most of our testers found it straightforward to use, with the sunset simulation providing the perfect wind-down at the end of the day.

There were a few niggles with set-up, which took a little longer than other products; however, once it was up and running, the controls were intuitive and testers enjoyed trying the 15 different wake-up sounds, which include everything from waves and purring kittens to white noise. Plus, you can even set and save a different alarm for every day of the week, which means there will be no accidental 6am starts on a Saturday if you forget to turn the alarm off.

Lexon Mina Sunrise Alarm Clock

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Mina Sunrise Alarm Clock

Pros

  • LED display turns off quite quickly, so it doesn’t keep you awake at night
  • Easy-access snooze button

Cons

  • Some panellists found the transition from dark to light quite sudden

Score: 88/100

The compact design of this Lexon alarm makes it the perfect addition to your bedside table. Our testers loved how easy it was to activate the sunset simulation, as well as the range of mood lighting, which helped them relax before bed. It also works wirelessly, so you can take it with you when travelling and keep up with your wind-down/wake-up routine.

Our testers also enjoyed the range of colour modes; however, one noted that the sunrise simulation starts on the colder end of the spectrum, moving from blue to warm lighting, which may not be to everyone’s liking. Overall, it’s a great buy, especially if you’re looking for a flexible option you can take on the go with you.

Best wake-up lamp

Dyson Solarcycle Morph™ desk

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Solarcycle Morph™ desk

Pros

  • Auto-corrects brightness for your age (the Illuminating Engineering Society suggests we need up to four times more light when we get older) as well as with the weather
  • Automatically goes into standby mode after five minutes of no motion detection
  • Has a USB-C charging function onboard
  • LEDs should last for up to 60 years

Cons

  • Base is sizeable and weighs 3kg, while the lamp's moveable parts feel delicate – so position it somewhere it won’t be easily knocked
  • No sound, so you may want to set an extra alarm as a back-up
  • No sunset function (although it will soften to provide the right level of light for the evening)

Score: 85/100

If we’re honest, sunrise alarm clocks aren’t always the most stylish gadgets. That’s where this innovative Dyson design comes in. It's not strictly an alarm clock (it doesn’t make a sound), but its smart capabilities mean it can function as a wake-up light.

Once you've programmed the wake-up mode via the MyDyson app, it will switch on at a set time and gradually brighten over a set half hour period. The light also changes throughout the day, adjusting its colour and brightness every 60 seconds to work with the natural light conditions in your home.

It’s simple to set up and there are responsive touch controls on the lamp itself if you don’t want to use the app all the time. It also detects and reacts to motion and can switch on at regular intervals for security purposes.

Plus, it has four different configurations, which make it incredibly versatile. There’s a task light to help reduce eye strain if you’re working or reading, an indirect light to create a soft background glow, a feature light that acts like a spotlight, and an ambient setting with reduced blue light to help you unwind before bed (our panel’s favourite pre-set option).

It’s expensive, but gadget fans will love it, whether it’s on the desk or by the bed.

Best multi-purpose sunrise alarm clock

Beurer WL50 Wake Up Light

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
WL50 Wake Up Light
Now 32% Off

Pros

  • Compact design
  • Buttons are clearly labelled and responsive to the touch

Cons

  • Some static when listening to the radio

Score: 85/100

With soothing lights, simulations and sounds, this alarm helped our testers drift off to sleep and wake up feeling relaxed. The Beurer WL50’s selling point is that it offers Bluetooth connectivity, so you can also use it as a speaker, as well as a sunrise alarm, mood light and bedside lamp.

One hitch our testers encountered was with the battery life. Most found it didn’t last very long, leaving some concerned that the alarm clock would run out overnight and not wake them in the morning. However, that’s simply a case of leaving it plugged in if you’re concerned or making sure you’re charging it before bedtime. Despite that niggle, almost all testers noted an improvement in their morning routines with this device.

Best sunrise alarm clock for radio functions

Pure Moment Charge Clock Radio

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Moment Charge Clock Radio

Pros

  • Loud alarm can reach another room when set on loudest level
  • Big snooze button makes it easy to find in the dark and there's a clear, glare-free screen

Cons

  • Snooze function is fixed and set at 10 minutes

Score: 82/100

This is one versatile alarm clock. It has a DAB/FM radio, Bluetooth pairing, a dimmable night light, and an impressive 20 natural sounds to help you drift off to sleep. There's even a wireless charging dock for your phone at the back of the alarm, which testers particularly loved – it’s practical and keeps your bedside table tidy.

In terms of its sunrise feature, both our expert and panel had mixed opinions. Set-up was time consuming, and you have to toggle through a combination of buttons and dials to navigate the menu. The light transition wasn’t the smoothest we’ve tried either and there’s no programmable sunset feature – so you’ll have to rely on its white noise sounds alone.

Best compact sunrise alarm clock

Lumie Sunrise Alarm

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Sunrise Alarm

Pros

  • Easy to set up and programme the simulations
  • Minimalist design makes it suitable for any bedroom

Cons

  • The snooze button is quite difficult to find when sleepy

Score: 70/100

While this is the simplest of the Lumie alarm clocks we tested, it still does a great job at simulating sunrise and sunset, offering a smooth and gradual wake-up for our testers. Small and lightweight, it fits easily on a bedside table and is a good pick for travellers who don't want to mess with their sleep routines.

The dimmable white light has 10 different levels of brightness, which makes it ideal for bedside reading. There are just five natural sounds to choose from – fewer than most of the other alarms we tested – and some of our panel found the sound quality a little tinny. But, for a budget model from market-leaders Lumie, this is a reliable buy.

The verdict on sunrise alarm clocks

Our testers loved the positive impact the Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light had on their bedtime routines. The 20 levels of light intensity and responsive controls completely won them over.

Lumie’s Bodyclock Shine 300 also put in an impressive performance in our tests, coming a close second. Set-up was a little fiddly at first, but it does come with 15 different wake-up sounds, so a little patience is definitely worth it.
