The best sunrise alarm clocks for a smoother wake-up call, tested by experts
Enjoy a gentler start to your day with these tried and tested sunrise simulators

Dragging yourself out of bed when it’s dark and dreary outside is tough (read: nigh on impossible some days), particularly when your bed is so warm and cosy.
Being rudely awakened by your smartphone's annoying ringtone doesn’t help either. It can be enough to put anyone in a bad mood – and that’s before you face a day of meetings, train delays, and trying to tick off everything on your to-do list.
But there is another way. The best sunrise alarm clocks offer a gentler start to your day. The clever gadgets wake you up gradually by simulating a sunrise, filling your room with warm, golden light (and maybe the peaceful chirp of a bird or two) to create a far less jarring wake-up call.
Need more convincing? As a homes writer, I've tried a lot of the best sleep gadgets in my time, and my sunrise alarm clock may be one of my favourites, helping me wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day head on.
At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we wanted to see which models were worth the investment, so we tested a range of the leading models, both in the lab and at home. Keep scrolling to read our full reviews, but here are our experts’ top-rated picks at a glance:

What kind of morning alarm is best?
While the best alarm for waking up in the morning is largely subjective, it’s no surprise that a gradual awakening is better for us than being jolted out of bed in the morning.
According to medical reviewer Dr Chester Wu, who is double board certified in psychiatry and sleep medicine, the combination of light and sound offered by a sunrise alarm will cater to many different preferences.
“There’s evidence that lower frequency alarm sounds are more effective at waking us up and reducing sleep inertia compared to higher frequency sounds, while pleasant, familiar musical alarms can improve our mood and make us less likely to press snooze,” he explains.
Should you buy a sunrise alarm clock?
If the sound of your alarm ringtone is enough to send a shiver down your spine, it may be time to treat yourself to an upgrade. By gentling simulating the rising of the sun, sunrise alarms can slowly rouse you from sleep, potentially making it much easier to wake up in the morning.
According to Dr Wu, the simulation of a “natural dawn” can help regulate our body clocks, so we feel less groggy when we wake up. “Morning light exposure suppresses melatonin production and kickstarts other physiological processes that make us feel more alert and keep our sleep-wake cycle on track,” he explains.
While they may be on the pricier side, sunrise alarm clocks can also help you manage conditions such as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Sometimes known as “the winter blues”, SAD is a mental health condition that affects more than two million people across the UK during winter when daylight hours are shortened. Using light boxes or sunrise alarms is recommended as a form of therapy that can help to ease depressive symptoms, literally brightening up your day.
And not only do they help you wake up gently in the morning, but many can also help improve your wind-down routine by simulating a sunset and using soothing sounds to create a relaxing environment for sleep.
What features should you look for in a sunrise alarm?
Before you add to basket, there are a few factors to consider.
Size: You’ll want an alarm that will fit comfortably on your bedside table. If you travel a lot and would like to take your alarm with you, you may also want to consider a more compact, lightweight model.
Adjustable sunrise times: How gradual do you want your wake-up call to be? Some of the alarms on our list can start increasing the level of brightness in your room from as much as 90 minutes before you want to get up.
Wireless: If you don’t want to be tied to a plug, look for a wireless option, such as the Lexon Mina Sunrise Alarm on our list below. These are also good for frequent travellers.
Brightness and colour options: Most sunrise alarms will have a choice of brightness settings and colour hues. Brightness is measured in lux, with the typical level for a natural sunrise being around 400. The higher the lux, the brighter the alarm can go. Adjustable colour hues are also good for those who like a night light or reading light, with orange and red tones best for minimising sleep disruption.
Sound: All the alarms on our list also offer the choice of using sound to wake you up, with some boasting up to 15 different options, from purring kittens to white noise.
Bonus features: Many of the products we tested also double up as an FM radio, mood light, a reading lamp, and even Bluetooth speakers, adding a whole new element to your sleep set-up.
How we test
We recruited a panel of 21 testers to trial each alarm over two weeks. We then asked them to give detailed feedback on design, ease of use and range of light settings, sounds and features available, as well as telling us how the alarm affected their sleep routine overall.
But we didn’t stop there – we also put the alarms to the test in the Good Housekeeping Institute lab. Our experts scored each one on how reliable it was in real-life scenarios, from stumbling for the snooze button in the dark to creating the perfect pre-snooze mood lighting. We also considered looks and the quality of instructions provided, before combining all our findings into a final score.
