9 best pregnancy pillows for a better night’s sleep

These tried and tested pregnancy and nursing pillows can help relieve aches and pains

Good Housekeeping UK

A good night’s sleep is incredibly important at any stage of life, and even more so when you're pregnant and your body is growing a tiny human. As your bump grows, it can become increasingly difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position (even if you're sleeping on the best mattress), and the baby can put added pressure on your back and hips.

That’s where the best pregnancy pillows come in. They’re specifically designed to support your body as it changes, helping you snooze uninterrupted. While they’re not an essential buy, these pillows can help make nighttime that little bit easier, especially when your sleep is impacted by aches, pains or pregnancy hormones.

So, the Good Housekeeping Institute got busy analysing a range of market-leading pregnancy pillows in the lab and sent them out to mums-to-be to find out which offer ACTUAL support.

Want to start shopping straight away? These are our top-rated pregnancy pillows at a glance but keep reading to find out everything you need to know before shopping.

What is a pregnancy pillow?

More than a standard pillow, these cushions come in a range of shapes that offer greater support and help to ease any discomfort. As your bump grows, you may find its weight starts to put pressure on different parts of your body, such as your back. Some can also experience discomfort in their legs or hips – or even pelvic girdle pain (aches caused by stiffness of the joints at either the front or back of the pelvis), which can be incredibly painful.

Most pregnant women start experiencing difficulties with sleep and comfort at around 20 weeks, so this may be a good time to invest in a pregnancy pillow. Having extra support will promote neutral spinal alignment and ease pressure around your back and hips – and there’s no hiding from the fact that they’re probably more comfortable to snuggle with than a twitchy, snoring partner...

The NHS also advises that you shouldn’t sleep on your back after 28 weeks, as it could increase the risk of stillbirth. If that’s your usual sleep style, a pregnancy pillow can help you stay comfortably on your side while asleep, keeping you well-supported.

What are the different types of pregnancy pillow and how do you use them?

There are a variety of styles of pregnancy pillow that can provide support while you sleep. These are the four main types.

  • I-shaped or sausage-shaped: You guessed it, these pillows are long like a sausage. When lying on your side, you can place them under your bump to provide extra support.
  • U-shaped: These are designed to wrap around your head, bump and legs. As they’re longer, you can place the curve of the U-shape behind your head to give full support on both sides of your body.
  • C-shaped: These curved pillows are perfect for wrapping round your bump and are typically smaller than U-shaped designs. You can lie your head on the top part of the C and rest the bottom part between your knees to give your back or front added support.
  • Wedge-shaped: These are smaller and can be used to provide support to specific areas, such as your back or pelvis.

What should I look for in a pregnancy pillow?

While comfort will be the main priority, there are a few other things to consider when shopping for the best pregnancy pillow.

Support: We all have our personal preferences when it comes to the best duvets and best standard pillows and a pregnancy pillow is no different. Think about whether you want to go firmer or softer.

Multifunctional use: Some pillows aren’t just for pregnancy. Some are also designed to be used once your baby is born to help provide support when you’re feeding. We’ve included a few baby feeding pillows (also known as nursing pillows) in our list.

Size: U-shaped pillows in particular can be rather large. This could make it more difficult to turn over at night and it may also push your partner out the other side of the bed – we’ll let you decide whether that’s a negative or not!

Washing: Look for a pillow you can wash easily, as it can get quite sweaty – or dirty if you also use it for feeding. Some can even be put in the tumble dryer, too.

Affordability: As with any purchase, think about what you can afford. Pregnancy pillows can be surprisingly expensive and the ones in this list range from £15 to over £150. If you buy a more expensive, fashionable one, you may find it can be sold on second-hand once you have finished with it.

How we test pregnancy pillows

how we test pregnancy pillows
Sally Hall/Good Housekeeping

To test pregnancy pillows, our expert first pulled, prodded and analysed them in the lab, assessing design, quality and comfort, as well as seeing how easy they are to clean, before awarding them a score out of 100.

We also sent them out to a panel of mums-to-be who trialled the pillows for a few weeks. They provided feedback on criteria such as firmness, comfort, whether the pillow made them too hot or too cool, and whether it washed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. These are the ones they loved curling up with.

Pros

  • Supportive and easy to use
  • Has a soft and stretchy organic cotton cover

Cons

  • Colour faded slightly after multiple washes

Score: 98/100

Our testers were fans of this innovative design, with one telling us it was ”one of the best cushions” they'd used for them and their baby. The large U-shaped pillow offers much more than meets the eye. Unzip the cover, turn its belly inside out and re-zip into the other supplied cover and you have a smaller, C-shaped pillow that’s great for keeping you comfortable throughout the day or for feeding your newborn.

It's great for providing extra support on the sofa and comfortable when lying in bed, with the internal microbeads providing a good level of firmness and support for our tester who found the pillow helped ease her back ache. The covers washed well too and were easy to get on and off the inner cushion. It’s a fairly expensive pillow but its versatility makes it our winner.

Purflo Breathe Pregnancy Pillow

Breathe Pregnancy Pillow

Pros

  • Both the cover and inner pillow can be washed
  • Soft-touch cover

Cons

  • May be a little thick to use for tummy time for newborns

Score: 98/100

Struggling to keep your cool? This is the pregnancy pillow for you. The cushion not only has a soft jersey cover, but it uses spacer mesh panels, which allow air to circulate, helping to regulate your temperature. Testers liked that the cover was easily removable for washing, and fuss-free to get back on afterwards.

One panellist also praised the ergonomic C-shaped design, which naturally follows the contours of your body and can be placed between the legs, around your back, or under your head – supporting you however you like to sleep! Our expert liked that it can be used as a feeding pillow too, or as a tummy time cushion for little ones from around four months old (but not for newborns as it’s quite thick).

Hippychick Nursing Pillow

Nursing Pillow

Pros

  • Comes with its own travel bag
  • Various patterns and colours available

Cons

  • Can be tricky to take off quickly as it ties behind your back

Score: 91/100

When feeding your newborn, you want a well-filled, supportive pillow that won’t move around or slip on your lap. This is where Hippychick’s Feeding Pillow comes in. It ties around your waist, allowing you to sit comfortably on any chair, sofa or bed and still have a stable surface for feeding.

Testers found the microbead filling provided just the right height to save your arms from fatigue and one confirmed that the firmness "kept [her baby] in a comfortable position throughout the feed." We appreciated the machine washable cover, and you can also purchase replacement covers, allowing you to keep your pillow looking fresh.

Best adjustable pregnancy pillow

BBhugme™ Pregnancy Pillow Kit

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Pregnancy Pillow Kit

Pros

  • You can easily position it to stop you rolling onto your back
  • The cover washed well

Cons

  • It’s a little cumbersome

Score: 91/100

Testers loved this pregnancy pillow from BBhugme because of its sleek design, pretty colourways and, most importantly, its functionality. It’s a long sausage-shaped pillow with a BPA-free (a chemical used to make certain plastic) microbead filling, which we found easy to squish around and adjust. Panellists noted that it's much lighter than other pregnancy pillows on the market, too.

You can also move the end clips (called pebbles) to adjust the firmness level – move further into the centre for firmer support or outwards for a softer pillow – to create the perfect pillow for your bump.

This makes it more versatile, as you can adjust it as your needs change throughout your pregnancy and for using afterwards as a feeding pillow. The outer cover was a little tricky to get back on post-wash and it's a pricey option; however, if you can splash the cash, it’s a worthy buy.

DreamGenii Pregnancy Support and Feeding Pillow

Pregnancy Support and Feeding Pillow

Pros

  • Washable cover
  • Offers full body support

Cons

  • Not the easiest to use on a sofa or chair due to the flat sections that are designed for sleeping on

Score: 89/100

The unique shape of this pillow won our expert over. They appreciated its large, supportive style, which makes it adaptable to a range of sleeping positions and different uses. Its extra back pillow helps prevent you from rolling onto your back in your sleep and the long, curved section is perfect for offering support to your legs, hips and bump. Note that it can be tricky to adjust and reposition when turning over in bed.

The cushion is well-padded though, and one panellist said they loved using it for extra support on the sofa. You can also use it as a feeding pillow after you give birth, making it a fantastic, versatile buy.

IKEA Nejlika Pregnancy Pillow

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Nejlika Pregnancy Pillow

Pros

  • Can be tumble dried
  • Easy to use and reposition

Cons

  • Made from polyester, which can be quite warm in hot weather

Score: 88/100

This affordable buy was labelled a "must have" by one panel member, especially for the later days of pregnancy. It works in a similar way to C-shaped pillows, and has a more pointed middle section (like a V-shape) and can be used to prop yourself up on the sofa or in bed.

Our expert thought it was a good option for wrapping around the body, with one end providing extra support, which is great for breastfeeding. They appreciated its full, firm padding but found the point of the V compressed a little too much when placed between the knees while side-sleeping. This didn't prove an issue for our pregnant mums though with one saying the pillow gave them "the best sleep since becoming pregnant."

We’d recommend getting one of the covers available for extra protection but the whole thing is machine washable anyway so it can be easily cleaned if it does get stained or sweaty.

Best nursing pillow for baby's digestion

Ergobaby Natural Curve Nursing Pillow with Strap

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Natural Curve Nursing Pillow with Strap

Pros

  • Cover is easy to clean
  • Has a useful carry handle

Cons

  • Some testers found it a little too firm

Score: 87/100

Created with the support of breastfeeding experts, this nursing pillow is wide and flat and is a good shape for laying your baby on during breast or bottle feeding. It's a firm pillow with gently curved sides that will help position your baby’s head properly and relieve strain on your arms, back and shoulders; it can also help ease wind, as your baby’s head is held higher than their tummy.

While the padding isn’t adjustable, it does have a strap you can fasten around your waist to keep it secure while you concentrate on your baby. It also comes with a lifetime guarantee so you can be confident that it will last you throughout pregnancy and beyond.

BBhugme Adjustable Nursing Pillow

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Adjustable Nursing Pillow

Pros

  • Designed by female health professionals
  • Adjustable so it can help prevent neck and back ache

Cons

  • Ties around your back so it’s tricky to take off quickly

Score: 85/100

Like BBhugme’s pregnancy pillow, this nursing-specific design comes in an I-shape and is filled with microbeads. Its cover is longer than the pillow itself so you can adjust the firmness of the filling with the help of the two ‘pebbles’ on either end. Our panellists loved the removable and washable cover as well as the handy carry case for trips away.

Its versatility impressed our expert too – the adjustable support means it’s suitable for people with different body shapes, so both you and your partner can find a comfortable position for feeding your baby. Plus, with lots of different colourways and designs, it can be used as a normal cushion when you no longer need it for feeding.

Snuz SnuzCurve

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
SnuzCurve

Pros

  • Good for encouraging side sleeping
  • Cover is soft and cool

Cons

  • Can’t be used easily in a seated position or on the sofa

Score: 82/100

Designed in collaboration with pregnancy experts (including chiropractors, midwives and physiotherapists) to support side-sleeping, this is a great buy for getting a comfortable, supported night’s sleep.

It has a section called the 'knee blade', which slips between your legs to keep your knees and ankles separated and your hips aligned, easing pressure on those key areas. It also means you’re less likely to change position and roll onto your back, which one panel member said she appreciated as she moved into her third trimester. The top section feels soft and squidgy and can be moved around to help you get comfy, but it isn't long enough to offer any head support.

It doesn't have the same versatility and longevity offered by some of the other pillows we tested. Our panellists would have liked an attachment or wedge to support your back or the other side of the body. It's designed for sleep so doesn't double as a nursing pillow. However, if you're looking for a pillow to encourage side sleeping, it delivers.

The verdict on pregnancy pillows

For full body support, our joint winners are our top pick when it comes to pregnancy pillows. The Babymoov B.Love 2-in-1 Pillow offers the benefits of both a U-shape and a C-shape pillow thanks to its adjustable design but Purflo’s Breathe Pregnancy Pillow earned a rave review for its breathable mesh panel that’s perfect for hot sleepers.

If you’re after an I-shaped design, we recommend BBhugme’s Pregnancy Pillow which is both stylish and adjustable.
