Good Housekeeping

While it might not be the same level of investment as the best mattress, your duvet can have a huge impact on your quality of sleep. You want one that’s cosy, but not too hot; one that’s light so you don't feel claustrophobic, but heavy enough to feel snug; and one that's easy to clean and durable, so you don't have to replace it too soon...And that’s all before you get into the best materials and fibres.

A lot of this does come down to your own personal sleep preferences, but with so many on the market, the Good Housekeeping Institute is here to lend a helping hand in your hunt for the best duvet for your bedroom set-up. In fact, we’ve tested 74 duvets over the years, so we’re pretty sure one of our picks will suit you.

Say goodbye to counting sheep and check out our best duvets below. Then keep scrolling for the full reviews and to find out what you need to consider before buying.

Best duvets for 2025

Want to complete your perfect sleep set-up? We've also tested the best mattress toppers, the best mattress protectors, and the best bed sheets and duvet covers in our lab.

How we test duvets

Testing duvets at the Good Housekeeping Institute is tiring work, but someone has to do it! Each one goes through rigorous testing with our in-house experts and we also send them out to panellists to see how they stand up in real world conditions – sweaty sleepers, fidgeting partners and all.

In the lab, every duvet is meticulously inspected to assess quality, with our experts keeping an eye out for any flaws or standout features. They’re then measured and checked to see whether they’re the same size as the brands claim. Then it's time to get washing. We put each duvet through the brand’s recommended wash and dry cycles before inspecting them again for any changes to the size, filling or appearance.

Meanwhile, we ask our panel of sleeping beauties to try each duvet and give us detailed feedback after a few weeks, telling us how well they slept and what it was like to cosy up with.

Finally, our experts collate all this information to award each duvet a score.

All sizes shown are for a UK double, unless specified.

Best summer duvet

Simba Summer Hybrid® Duvet

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Summer Hybrid® Duvet

Score: 98/100

A 4.5 tog duvet may seem too light to keep you warm on chillier nights, but Simba’s clever Stratos “cool touch” fabric works to regulate temperature and kept our testers snug without causing them to sweat during testing.

It scored highly in other areas, too – the fabric was soft, durable and well-made, while the recycled plastic bottle filling was evenly distributed without clumping. As a result, everyone slept soundly.

In fact, this duvet was difficult to fault – it was easy to clean, store and fit into a double duvet cover, so you won’t be wrestling with it on laundry day, either.

Best all-seasons duvet

Soak & Sleep Soft As Down Microfibre Duvet (4.5 + 9 tog)

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Soft As Down Microfibre Duvet (4.5 + 9 tog)

Score: 97/100

This all-seasons duvet was a “game-changer” for testers. They loved the choice between layers (either 4.5 or 9 tog) and the option to join them together to create a thicker 13.5 tog duvet for the coldest nights – even if connecting them via the ‘cufflink’ design was a tad fiddly.

Making the bed with both layers combined was also a challenge due to its cosy thickness. But this didn’t put our testers off – all agreed they would recommend this duvet to friends and family, with its luxuriously soft feel and high-quality touches, such as the grey trim detailing, helping to seal the deal.

We also tested the Soak and Sleep Soft As Down Microfibre Duvet with a 10.5 tog rating, which scored 96/100. Read our review in our roundup of the best winter duvets.

Best down duvet

The White Company Hungarian Goose Down Duvet – 10.5 Tog

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Hungarian Goose Down Duvet – 10.5 Tog

Score: 96/100

Our winning down duvet wowed the experts with its luxurious quality. Its combination of goose down and feathers makes it super soft, lightweight and comfortable to sleep under – and our testers weren’t prickled by feathers poking through, either. Some found it slightly bumpier than synthetic duvets, but that’s to be expected with down.

Note that The White Company says its filling is sourced from cruelty-free suppliers and it only uses food industry by-products. Impressively for down, it washed well and was easy to pop inside a duvet cover. But we’ll leave you with the words of one of our testers, who said: “This is amazing, like a hug in a duvet!”

Best value duvet for winter

Slumberdown Chilly Nights Double Duvet 15 Tog

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Chilly Nights Double Duvet 15 Tog

Score: 94/100

Despite the high 15 tog rating, testers didn’t find this duvet too thick; instead, they said it was comfortable and snug to sleep under. They also liked the ‘puffy’ appearance, which made their beds even more inviting than normal.

It may not be as luxurious and dense as a down duvet, but every tester said they’d recommend it to friends and family after the four-week trial. It washed well (though it took a while to dry) and maintained its high-quality stitching and comfort.

Emma 4-Seasons Duvet

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
4-Seasons Duvet

Score: 94/100

Small, secure poppers turn this into a versatile, year-round duvet. When its 3.5 tog and 7 tog layers are combined, the full 10.5 togs are perfect for the chillier nights, while the separate layers will see you through the rest of the year.

We’d have liked a storage bag for the extra parts but otherwise, the three-in-one design was a big hit. The layers stayed together securely when combined and were quiet too. Our experts noticed some shrinkage during the wash tests but otherwise, it maintained it’s even filling and high-quality stitching.

Simba Hybrid® 3-in-1 Duvet

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Hybrid® 3-in-1 Duvet

Score: 93/100

Just like the Emma above, this is another 10.5 tog duvet that's made up of two lighter layers. Again, this Simba duvet is filled with soft polyester, which is made from recycled plastic bottles and boasts the brand's temperature control technology, designed to help you sleep well all year round.

Some testers found the fully combined duvet too hot, so they appreciated the versatility of the separate layers on warmer nights. It shrunk slightly in the wash too and rustled a bit when testers tossed and turned in their sleep, but everyone still said they’d recommend it to a friend.

Brooke +Wilde The Everdene Cooling Duvet

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
The Everdene Cooling Duvet

Score: 92/100

This cooling duvet is made with thermo-regulating fibres and soothing aloe vera, and hit the sweet spot with our testers. It was warm enough when needed but comfortable on hot nights, and the premium 100% Egyptian cotton casing added a touch of luxury to bedtime. So much so that every single tester said this duvet helped them get a good night’s sleep and they would recommend it to friends and family.

There was a little shrinkage when it went through the wash but not enough to leave a gap when we popped the cover back on; plus, the filling and stitching came out as good as new.

Panda Cloud Duvet

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Cloud Duvet

Score: 92/100

Described as offering “five-star hotel quality” by one panellist, this more eco-friendly, two-part duvet cover is a delight to sleep under, with a high-thread-count finish that feels cool-to-the-touch and silky-soft against the skin. The duvet was easy to unpack, fitted snugly inside our cover, and washed and dried well, although it did shrink very slightly after cleaning.

The snap button system allows you to attach the 4.5 tog duvet and 10.5 tog duvet together (you’ll need to purchase both separately) for extra warmth in the winter, making this a versatile year-round design. It’s worth noting that the popper connection can be a bit fiddly to fasten and, as expected, it’s heavier when using both layers, but this was by no means a deal-breaker. In fact, 100% of panellists said they’d purchase the duvet again and recommend it to others.

Joint best wool duvet

Slumberdown Wonderful Wool Double Duvet - Heavyweight

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Wonderful Wool Double Duvet - Heavyweight

Score: 91/100

Made from 100% British wool, this Slumberdown duvet is a heavyweight option that naturally regulates body temperature to provide warmth and cosiness. Testers found it a joy to sleep under and appreciated the nice natural smell of the wool, alongside the crisp, quality cotton cover.

Performance-wise, it was a real all-rounder. However, it's a bit trickier to care for than others on our list. Wool is naturally anti-bacterial, but this duvet’s not machine washable. Removing coffee stains with a wet sponge required plenty of scrubbing, and drying took a while, too. But if you're careful with your morning brew, it’s a fantastic buy.

Another wool duvet that wowed our testers, this premium buy from Rise and Fall is made with traceable British wool. Our panel found it luxuriously soft to the touch thanks to its high-quality finish and even filling. All of which helped them enjoy a dreamy night’s sleep.

It regulated their temperature well, but some found it noisy when they snuggled under the covers, so that’s something to keep in mind if you’re a light sleeper. It’s not machine washable either, but that’s easily solved with a trip to the dry cleaners.

George Home 4.5 Tog Duvet

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
4.5 Tog Duvet

Score: 91/100

This duvet may be cheap, but you can trust it to deliver a restful night's sleep. Every single one of our testers would recommend it to a friend after enjoying four weeks of its soft and snuggly hollowfibre filling.

Due to its 4.5 tog design, it’s not overly thick, making it best suited to warmer weather. Our testers appreciated that it can easily be washed and dried at home, with the laundry process proving a breeze from start to finish. Testers praised its clear instructions, minimal shrinkage and short drying time.

Just note that the quality of the fabric isn’t as high as others we’ve tested, although this wasn’t an issue for our panellists.

Score: 91/100

Our testers appreciated the sustainable efforts behind Snuggledown’s down duvet; the natural materials are ethically sourced and Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified. The brand also manufactures it right here in the UK.

It doesn’t just impress on paper, though. Testers loved its comforting yet lightweight feel, which kept them pleasingly warm at night. It was effortless to unpack, move and fit into a duvet cover too.

The only real downside came post-wash and dry, when some elbow grease was needed to fluff and disperse the down filling evenly again. Otherwise, it remained the same premium duvet our testers had come to love.

Best bamboo duvet

Ethical Bedding Bamboo Duvet (Eucalyptus & Bamboo) - Light/Medium

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Bamboo Duvet (Eucalyptus & Bamboo) - Light/Medium

Score: 91/100

Testers raved about the oh-so-soft feel of this duvet with its cover made from 100% eucalyptus fibre. This luxurious material is naturally moisture wicking, breathable, hypoallergenic and zero static. The bamboo filling (which also uses some recycled plastic bottles) has similar breathability characteristics.

Everything about the product was super high-quality – it even came packed in a well-designed bag that’s handy for storage, should you need something that’s weightier in winter (although our testers found it lightweight and cosy).

One thing to note is that the bag doesn’t contain any care instructions, so look online for those – everything on the website is thorough and easy to understand though, so this shouldn’t be an issue.

This duvet lived up to its name. Our testers found the 10.5 tog option was indeed brilliant at regulating their body temperature, keeping them cool at night and stopping them from waking up sweaty. And rest assured that it also aced our wash tests – its quality was still high after multiple washes (with no shrinkage) and it dried quickly.

In theory, this duvet should suit all year round, but it may be a little too airy for chillier months (although one of our best blankets may solve this). For quality and comfort though, this is a stellar buy, whatever the weather.

Cloud Duvet - 6.7 Tog

Score: 90/100

If you think a 4.5 tog duvet may be too lightweight for you, then this Emma could be a great alternative – at 6.7 togs, it's slightly more substantial. Our panel described it as “indulgent,” generally enjoying the way its soft microfibre filling and casing regulated their body temperature. Plus, small touches like piping around the edges gave it a premium finish.

Instead of shrinking like some of the other duvets we’ve tested, this one stretched in our wash tests. This was only minimal though, so it still fitted nicely into our duvet cover, and the filling remained evenly distributed, helping our testers enjoy their beauty sleep.

Soft, fluffy and “like a cloud” were just some of the ways our panellists described this premium buy. They were comfortable tucked up in it all night and didn't have to deal with any annoying feathers poking through the casing.

It’s a lofty design, especially when the 4.5 and 9 tog parts are combined, and some had to experiment to find their Goldilocks configuration. Christy recommends taking it to be laundered professionally, which was backed up in our tests, as panellists found it a tad too buoyant to fit into some domestic washing machines.
