Keep your mattress in tip-top shape with the GHI's tried and tested picks

The best mattresses can be expensive, so it’s important to look after yours to ensure it lasts as long as possible. A simple way to keep a mattress in shop-bought condition is by investing in a mattress protector, which will keep it safe from spills, stains, dust and bacteria.
Finding the best mattress protector for your set-up is just as important as finding the best duvet or best pillow, and should be considered an essential part of your bedding. Luckily, the Good Housekeeping Institute has made the search a lot easier by putting the market leaders to the test.
Here are our top recommendations, but keep scrolling for our detailed reviews and expert guide on what to look for – from fabrics to design.
How we test mattress protectors
In the Good Housekeeping Institute lab, we tested 53 mattress protectors, assessing each one on fit, security and comfort. We also assessed any waterproofing claims made by brands.
We checked whether the protectors rustled when moving sleep positions, and we monitored any cooling properties by seeing if our temperature stayed level overnight. Finally, we put each mattress protector through a series of wash tests to make sure there was no shrinkage or damage.
These are the ones that came out on top.
