If you’re a spy thriller fan, you may already know about the faultless spy drama starring Lesley Manville, which goes by the name of Citadel. If you don’t, you should know that the Prime Video series has been described as being better than Slow Horses (yes, really) and that it’s set to make an emotional return.
The first series starred Richard Madden and Priyanka Jonas as two spies who had their memories wiped when their agency, Citadel, was destroyed by powerful criminal syndicate Manticore. Their new mission? To prevent their enemy agency from establishing a new world order that would destroy everything.
Now, the spy drama is officially making its way back to our screes for what’s been described as the “most exhilarating” series yet – and we implore you to tune in (you can still catch up on series 1). Ahead of the show's return to our screens, here's everything you need to know about it, including the cast, series 2 plot and release date.
What is Citadel about?
The spy thriller first aired on Amazon Prime Video in April 2023 and starred Richard Madden and Priyanka Jonas as two spies who once loved each other – before their memories were wiped after their agency, Citadel, was destroyed by the operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows.
Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) had remained hidden ever since Citadel’s fall, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts. Until one night, when Mason was tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needed his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order.
Mason sought out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embarked on a mission that took them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love.
The adrenaline-fueled series also starred Lesley Manville as Dahlia Archer, Osy Ikhile as Carter Spence, Ashleigh Cummings as Abby Conroy, Roland Møller as Anders Silje and Davik Silje, Caoilinn Springall as Hendrix Conroy, and more. It also spawned two spin-offs, Citadel: Diana, which was released in October 2024 and Citadel: Honey Bunny, which was released in November 2024. Citadel: Honey Bunny was set in India, while Citadel: Diana was set in Italy and both followed different sects of the Citadel spy agency.
What will happen in Citadel series 2?
According to Deadline, the storylines of Citadel: Diana and Citadel: Honey Bunny, will be woven into series 2. The official synopsis reads: “One month after the events of the first season, we find our Citadel spies underground, as they’re being hunted by Manticore agents around the world.
“They’re pulled out of hiding to join forces with a new team of unconventional spies when Manticore’s Brazilian billionaire Paulo Braga threatens to unleash a cataclysmic piece of technology, built by Citadel’s own Bernard Orlick, into the world.”
Amazon MGM Studios head of television Vernon Sanders, has teased that series 2 will be the “most exhilarating yet”. He continued: “With high-stakes storytelling, new additions to our amazing cast and bold, cinematic ambition, the new season will deepen the emotional journeys of Nadia, Mason and Orlick against the relentless force that is Manticore.
Who's starring in Citadel series 2?
While Prime Video hasn't yet shared who the new additions to the cast are, we do know that the following cast members will reprise their roles:
- Richard Madden as Mason Kane
- Priyanka Jonas as Nadia Sinh
- Stanley Tucci as Bernard Orlick
- Lesley Manville as Dahlia Archer
Is Citadel any good?
Yes - if you're a fan of Apple TV+'s Slow Horses, it's well worth a watch. As we mentioned, it's actually been described as being better than Slow Horses, which might be to do with the brilliant visuals, continual twists and turns and, of course, its rather special cast. Lesley Manville, Richard Madden and Stanley Tucci all in one show? What's not to love.
How can I watch Citadel series 2?
The good news is that we have a release window for the new series - but it unfortunately looks like we might have a while to wait before we can watch it. Amazon MGM Studios head of television Vernon Sanders has confirmed that the series will return in 2026, and we can only hope that it will be the early part of it. As soon as we have a confirmed date, we'll share it here. In the meantime, you can check out our pick of the best spy thrillers that you can watch now.
