What is a cylinder vacuum cleaner?
Cylinder vacuums are made up of two parts: the main body, which you pull behind you as you work, and the suction head, which is connected via a hose. They're usually lightweight and, unlike cordless or robot models, you don't need to worry about recharging them as they run on mains power.
Cylinders tend to be better at cleaning stairs and all those tricky crevices and places you often forget to vacuum too, thanks to their long, flexible hoses. Designs are either bagged or bagless and often come with a good selection of tools, but some can be bulkier and more awkward to store, which is worth bearing in mind if space is tight.
How to choose a cylinder vacuum cleaner
Many modern cylinder vacuum cleaners come with a host of fancy features. These can be useful, but don't fork out money for tech that you don't need or won’t use. We’ve broken down what’s on offer to help you settle on the features that meet your vacuuming needs.
- Telescopic extendable tube: This handy feature extends the metal section of the hose to give you extra reach in larger rooms.
- Variable power: This is useful if you need more power for deep-pile carpets or are conscious of energy use.
- Retractable cord: At the press of a button, you can rewind the cord into the cleaner.
- Dust capacity: The bigger the dust capacity, the more your vacuum can hold. Typically measured in litres, a larger dust capacity means you'll need to empty it less often.
- Range of tools: Most cylinders now count a crevice tool and upholstery brush among their additional vacuum attachments. If you have pets, look for a rotating brush to collect ground-in hair.
- Accessory storage: This varies from model to model; some allow you to store the accessories within the main body of the vacuum while others clip on or may need to be stored separately.
- Filters: All vacuums contain filters that stop the dust you suck up from re-entering the atmosphere. Some even contain more than one filter for added retention. To keep them working, they need to either be washed regularly or replaced, although some are self-cleaning. It’s important that you keep up with this maintenance so the dust is contained and your vacuum works at full efficiency. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are also worth looking out for, as they offer the highest quality of air filtration.
- Bagged/bagless: Some vacuums contain bags that need replacing once full. Helpfully for allergy sufferers, you don't have to touch the dust and dirt to empty the canister, which you may need to do with a bagless model. However, if you opt for a bagged cylinder, you’ll need to keep some empty bags in stock at all times.
