10 best handheld vacuums for speedy cleans, from sofas to cars

These tried and tested vacuums will banish dust, dirt and pet hair from every nook and cranny

preview for GHI How We Test : Vacuums

When it comes to cleaning awkward spaces, it's important to select the best vacuum for the job. And that's what the best handheld vacuums are for.

These compact machines make light work of sofas and car interiors, while their cordless design makes them easy to grab for emergency pre-hosting touch-ups. Some even suck up liquid spills, meaning no more crying over spilt milk.

Handheld vacuums lack the long battery life and large dust capacity of the best upright vacuums and best cylinder vacuums, but they’re a top choice for smaller homes with lots of nooks and crannies, or for messy car owners (you know who you are).

What is the best handheld vacuum to buy?

If you’ve already decided that a handheld vacuum is the best friend you never knew you needed, these are our tried and tested top models in a handy list:

If you’re replacing an existing vacuum, there are plenty of places for you to safely recycle your old one. Find your nearest electrical recycling point, or read our guide on how to donate or dispose of your appliances and tech for extra guidance.

Our Good Housekeeping Institute experts have rigorously tested every vacuum on this list across four different floor types (long- and short-piled carpet, laminate and floorboards). Scroll on to read their full reviews, and learn more about how we test vacuum cleaners.

Happy vacuuming!

How we test handheld vacuum cleaners

how we test vacuums
Good Housekeeping

The Good Housekeeping Institute tests each handheld vacuum on four different floor types: long- and short-piled carpet, laminate and floorboards.

Firstly, we assess general pick-up using our special formulation of dust. We lay down a designated volume, before weighing exactly how much each vacuum has collected after a set number of sweeps. This is repeated for every floor type.

We then judge how well each model deals with pet hair by grinding real fur into the carpet.

We also test performance when picking up larger debris, including common household residues such as cereal and biscuit crumbs.

On top of this, we run an interior car cleaning test to gauge how effective each vacuum is, with a particular focus on how it tackles crevices and removes dirt from awkward spaces.

We note how long its battery lasts and how long it takes to recharge.

Finally, our experts consider its design, ease of use, instructions and any innovative features before awarding each vacuum with a final score.

Shark Classic Handheld Pet Vacuum CH950UKT

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Classic Handheld Pet Vacuum CH950UKT

Pros

  • Excellent pick-up across all our tests
  • Well-designed and easy to use

Cons

  • Shorter battery life may inhibit bigger cleaning jobs like cars

Score: 94/100

Designed with pet owners in mind, this well-priced Shark gobbled up pet hair in one swift sweep thanks to its dedicated tool. It was superb with food crumbs too – lifting every morsel from all floor types – and dust, picking up 99%, with the majority vanishing in one sweep.

The battery lasts for just over 10 minutes (it takes about four hours to recharge) but this was long enough for us to clean a small car. It’s weightier than others tested and doesn’t have any onboard storage for additional tools. Otherwise, it's an all-round excellent performer, making it our top choice.

Black+Decker Wet and Dry Cordless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Wet and Dry Cordless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

Pros

  • Cleans wet and dry messes with ease
  • Intuitively designed

Cons

  • Again, 10-minute battery life may not be enough for big cars

Score: 94/100

Both affordable and an all-rounder, this compact handheld is a savvy buy if you don’t want to splash out. It had great pick-up across all our tests and floor types, whether lifting dust, pet hair, or crumbs. It also scored top marks for its car cleaning abilities and our testers were impressed with the way it easily cleaned up liquids, leaving our flooring dry to the touch.

It’s easy to set up and use, but best kept for quick cleans as you need to hold the on button down throughout use, which can take its toll after a short while. It only has one power setting, too.

Gtech ProLite MM001

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
ProLite MM001

Pros

  • Excellent at cleaning food spillages
  • Simple to use

Cons

  • Took three sweeps to lift pet hair

Score: 94/100

The best at lifting crumbs and debris, turn to this vacuum when cleaning small spillages in the kitchen or on the sofa. Its larger, bagged design makes it ideal for bigger households, while emptying is also mess-free.

Built-in LED lights make it easier to spot debris and dust in awkward spots and the battery lasted 20 minutes, even on max power, which was ample time to clean a car.

Its bulky body made it tricky to reach narrow crevices and it struggled with embedded pet hair. Overall, though, this handheld is a trusty and intuitive buy.

Shark WandVac 2.0 Handheld Vacuum Cleaner WV270UK

WandVac 2.0 Handheld Vacuum Cleaner WV270UK

Pros

  • Excellent for cleaning cars
  • Great accompanying tools

Cons

  • Small capacity

Score 92/100

Shark’s second entry should be first choice if your home has a lot of hard floors, as it scored full marks for pick-up on laminate and floorboards. It was also the best on test for lifting dirt from cars thanks to its lightweight design and crevice tool.

It wasn’t the best performer on carpet, struggling to pick up some debris, but its upholstery tool lifted pet hair nicely. If storage is tight, you can mount the accompanying charging base on the wall.

Note: it needs frequent emptying and using it in max power mode ran down the battery in seven and a half minutes on test (on standard it lasts 15), but it recharges in about three hours, which is faster than our winning Shark.

Best handheld vacuum for carpet spot cleans

Dyson Car+Boat handheld vacuum cleaner

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Car+Boat handheld vacuum cleaner

Pros

  • Clear and easy to see when the dust canister is full
  • Dyson app includes troubleshooting, care and maintenance advice

Cons

  • Have to continuously hold down trigger to use, which can be uncomfortable after extended periods
  • Quite heavy for a handheld

Score: 89/100

Claiming to be the most powerful handheld vacuum on the market, Dyson’s brand-new Car+Boat handheld gadget promised a lot, so how did it fare when our experts put it to the test?

Overall, its pickup was excellent, something we’ve come to expect from a Dyson vacuum. On both long and short pile carpet, most crumbs were removed in one sweep and even pet hair lifted without too much trouble. In fact, it dropped only one mark across our carpet, laminate and floorboard tests.

It was the battery that let it down, though. When switched onto max mode, it lasted 10-15 minutes at most, which wasn’t long enough for our tester to clean an entire car. And it then takes five hours to recharge – not ideal if you’re mid-cleaning. Pop it back on to charge after short spot cleans though, and it’s a joy to use.

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Dustbuster Flexi Pet 10.8v PD1020LP-GB Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

Pros

  • Long reach thanks to accompanying extension hose
  • Good-sized dust canister

Cons

  • Heavier than some

Score: 88/100

This outstanding performer comes at a relatively affordable price. Its useful accessories make vacuuming easy; there’s an extension hose for reaching into awkward spaces and a pet tool to make your fluffball’s fur disappear.

It works well on every surface but runs out in 15 minutes – not quite enough time to clean a big car. The upholstery brush on the 2-in-1 nozzle needs clicking into place every now and again and the main handle vibrates a little uncomfortably. That said, it’s undoubtedly a steal.

Beldray Airlite Cordless Hand Vacuum

Airlite Cordless Hand Vacuum

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Good with dust and crumbs

Cons

  • Not one for pet owners

Score: 85/100

Scroll on if you have dogs or cats, as this vacuum struggled to pick up pet hair. That aside, it’s lightweight, comfortable to hold and powerful. It impresses on any type of flooring, but the colour starts to wear away around the short nozzle after a few uses.

Its dust capacity is small, but its slim design makes it a breeze to pack away and the charging dock’s tool storage space makes it a smart choice for compact homes.

Best for pet hair

GTECH Multi MK2 Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Multi MK2 Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

Pros

  • Good all-rounder
  • Longer battery life than many

Cons

  • Heavy

Score: 84/100

Pet hair can be a pain, but this model removes it at pace. It glides over all floor types and comes with a handy selection of tools, including a lengthy crevice tool and an extension tube that reaches into awkward corners. It’s just a shame that these attachments don’t click into place, making it hard to know if they’re secured.

Its removable battery makes charging unobtrusive, but it’s fairly bulky and the dust container is tricky to remove and refit. The exhaust blows out a lot of air, too, which can dislodge some lighter debris.

Beldray BEL0944 Revo Cordless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

BEL0944 Revo Cordless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

Pros

  • Great for bigger jobs like car cleaning
  • Intuitively designed

Cons

  • Struggled with pet hair

Score: 79/100

You get 30 minutes of battery life with this lightweight vacuum, but the trade-off is that it takes five hours to recharge. It’s slim enough to squeeze into tight spaces and the charging base offers a neat storage solution, with room to house the included tools.

It’s generally easy to empty but hair and fluff can get stuck, meaning the washable filter has to be removed. It’s sturdy, thanks to suction cups on the base, and there’s no need to hold down the power switch. The buttons are accessible with the same hand holding the vacuum – a welcome, thoughtful design feature.

Hoover H-Handy 700 Pets HH710TPT Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

H-Handy 700 Pets HH710TPT Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

Pros

  • Versatile
  • Good for cleaning crumbs

Cons

  • Struggled with dust

Score: 78/100

Three’s not a crowd with the sturdy multi-purpose tool that comes with this model – it features a crevice tool, an upholstery tool and a dusting brush. It also comes with a motorised pet tool, but the vacuum must be held at a low angle for this to sit properly on the floor.

The stand’s accessory box makes it bulky to store, but it’s otherwise compact enough to manoeuvre easily. It sucks up debris well, especially on hard floors and long pile carpets, but its dust pick-up lets it down. The handle is chunky and the battery life short, but on balance, it’s a neat gadget to have on hand.

Do I need a handheld or cordless vacuum?

Before investing in a handheld model, check your current vacuum’s functionalities as some of the best cordless vacuums double up as handhelds, so you may have one already. Equally, buying a multi-tasking stick vacuum may be a better fit for your home, particularly if you’re tight on space.

Cordless vacuums do tend to cost more than their mini counterparts, however, so if you aren’t looking to upgrade your existing model, a handheld would make a thrifty buy that can still competently reach those awkward spots.

What to look for in a handheld vacuum

If a handheld vacuum is for you, here’s what to look out for before you buy.

Battery life

If possible, opt for a model that has a running time of at least 20 minutes, as this should give you enough charge to clean a car. A model that recharges quickly may also prove helpful.

Dust capacity

To avoid continuously emptying your dust canister, look for a minimum capacity of 0.3 litres.

Weight

Between 1-1.5kg should be light enough to keep your arms from aching while in use.

Attachments

If you’re constantly cleaning up after a four-legged friend, look for a pet hair brush to make vacuuming up fur easy. Or, if you’re planning on valeting your car regularly, a crevice tool will help you reach fiddly recesses, making it an essential accessory.

The verdict on handheld vacuums

There are three handheld vacuums sharing our podium top spot, and they each offer something slightly different.

If you need your handheld vacuum to deal with pet hair, then the Shark Classic Handheld Pet Vacuum is designed specifically for the job. Its battery life isn’t that extensive though, lasting long enough for a small car on test, but you'll probably struggle to clean anything bigger in one go.

The Gtech ProLite Handheld Vacuum had a 20-minute battery life on test and was our stand-out pick-up for dealing with dust and debris, although it wasn’t as good with embedded pet hair. It’s also the most expensive of our three joint winners.

Finally, there’s the Black+Decker Wet and Dry Cordless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner. This is our budget pick. Like the Shark, its battery lasts for ten minutes, and it only has one power setting, but its pick-up was excellent, more than holding its own when compared with more expensive counterparts.
