With hair tangles, critters and the jungle swamp water long since washed away, Coleen Rooney has unveiled her most luxurious beauty look ever. The WAG and TV star has stepped out with the most artfully undone bun we’ve ever seen, in a super-shiny, Bournville chocolate shade that works seamlessly with her cocoa-toned smoky makeup.
The star is wearing her hair in a fashionable centre parting, with the updo itself kept just the right degree of loose for a casual yet chic finish. Retaining a degree of ‘give’ and having a smattering of loose tendrils around her face adds a modern, soft finish to Coleen’s look, which is far more flattering than a scraped-back version. It’s also far less likely to cause either traction alopecia or the dreaded tight hair headaches; a benefit we’re sure Coleen will appreciate.
And not only does it happen to look stunning on Coleen, it’s THE most wanted brunette look of the season, according to trend experts.
Coleen’s hair is now a far richer shade than the sunny caramel we saw during I’m A Celebrity.., and her balayage pieces have been swapped for a shade that’s single tone yet still multi-dimensional. In other words, monochromatic without being monotonous.
It’s a look that L’Oréal Professionnel UK editorial colour ambassador Zoë Irwin has dubbed ‘starlet brunette’, one of her key hair trend predictions for this season. As she explains: ‘Ultra-deep monotones give a luminous glow to the skin and draw to the eye colour’.
Hairdresser and trendspotter Tom Smith is also a huge fan of a Coleen-esque ‘monobrown’ look. ‘There’s something that all trending deeper hair shades have in common at the moment,’ he says. ‘Multi-dimensional brunettes are taking a backseat, as the monochromatic tones I’m calling “monobrown” take centre stage.’
Because it’s a look that doesn’t involve balayage or babylights, it’s cheaper to achieve, yet happens to look incredibly luxurious. ‘It’s super glossy and high shine, without high or lowlights, just minimal, beautiful brunettes. Simplicity is key for this trend.’
How to get Coleen’s starlet brunette
This trend works on all tones of brunette hair, and all skin tones, Tom explains that monobrown can be adapted for ‘warm, cool or neutral tones’ of brunette. There are essentially just two key components.
Firstly, a single shade of brunette that still allows the hair’s own, very subtle multi-dimensional tones to show through (nobody has flat, one-tone hair unless it’s been horribly over-dyed). And secondly, masses of healthy shine, which plays into the brunette hair’s natural light-reflecting advantage over blondes.

Coleen sticks to the richly indulgent theme with her makeup, with a mix of toffee, caramel and chocolate tones on her lips, cheeks and eyes. While her makeup artist Cassie Lomas hasn’t yet shared the products she used, Coleen herself has revealed she’s a fan of Charlotte Tilbury tinted moisturiser for her base, paired with Chanel Les Beiges Bronzing Cream.
