We’re used to seeing her with more structured hairstyles, but Glenn Close has shown her softer side this week. The Hollywood icon swapped her usual waved and swept back silver hair for something a lot more relaxed for her latest red carpet look, and honestly? It’s great to see her letting her hair down.
The actress, 78, appeared at the Disney Upfront 2025 Red Carpet event wearing a pastel lemon trouser suit and a new hairstyle that was equally soft and spring-like. Any hint of Devil Wears Prada hard-hold steeliness was quite literally swept aside, with Glenn opting for a long, fluffy fringe that skimmed her eyelashes and gently curled around her temples. Her usual waves made way for a smoothed out, silky texture, which made her silver hair shine.
Seen from the side, the long layers continue around the side of her head, creating a chic, 1960s-style shape. It’s a little bit vintage Twiggy, brought up to date for 2025 with plenty of volume and a modern, texturised finish.
The key to the whole transformation, though? It’s the parting. Glenn has jettisoned a more central parting for a deep sweep that starts on the far left of her head, with the whole front section being pushed across to the opposite side.
‘Parting your hair to a different side can make a huge difference to your hair without getting it cut,’ says celebrity hairdresser Michael Douglas. ‘It’s such a good, no-risk, no-commitment tweak. Most women think they have a ‘good’ side to their face, and a side parting allows your hair to fall so that more of that side is on show.’
As a smart touch, Glenn has gone for a slightly diagonal parting, rather than an extreme comb-over (Bobby Charlton is not the look to aim for). ‘I like a diagonal parting, starting in the middle at the crown and coming forward at a slight angle. It switches up your style but it also avoids ending up with lots more hair on one side than the other,’ says Michael.
The fringe helps to keep the shape of Glenn’s hair in balance, as does the back section, which is pushed backwards from the crown and gently teased for a little oomph.
If your hair objects to being taken in a new direction, a good hair tool will help to stop it stubbornly falling apart in the same spot. Mdlondon’s WAVE Heated barrel brush multi-styler is a cinch to use, and it’s Davina McCall’s favourite hair tool for boosting volume and shaping her curtain bangs.
Glenn complemented the fluffy 1960s fringe with an equally flattering cat eye, where liquid liner has been diffused to avoid a harsh line. Add in the velvety rose lipstick and dewy blusher and you’ve got a masterclass in soft glam with a 1960s twist.
