The 80s are calling – and no, don’t worry shoulder pads aren’t back (yet). This time, we’re welcoming back blue eyeshadow, but with a fresh, modern twist. Although you might assume blue is an intimidating beauty look, it’s actually completely wearable and very flattering. Don’t believe us? Just look at Gabby Logan who just proved just how soft and chic it can look.
The TV presenter graced the (blue) carpet last night at the 2025 Women's Football Awards, in a look that couldn’t be more on theme. Not only did she match the carpet in a satin blue dress, but she doubled down with matching eyeshadow - clearly, coordination is her secret superpower.
This blue-eyed girl look is actually a classic that’s never gone out of fashion, according to Charlotte Tilbury, who has made blue a key tone in her new eyeshadow collection, which GH has tried and loved. ‘Blue eyeshadow is a quintessential pop of colour that makeup artists and eyeshadow lovers have gravitated towards for decades,’ says Charlotte.
Gabby looked so beautiful wearing the shade that we had to find out what it was, so we asked Gabby’s makeup artist Liz Beckett to give us the lowdown. The answer? Lancôme’s Hypnôse Eyeshadow Palette in Drama Denim.
The trick, according to Liz, is not to just go for one shade of bright blue, but use a tonal palette of cooler blue hues. Gabby’s makeup is essentially a classic smokey eye but with navy and petrol colours standing in for the usual dark brown shades.
‘To keep it modern, I used the central blue shade all over Gabby’s lid and up to the crease,’ Liz tells GH. ‘Next, I took the same shadow under the lower lash line and blended it to create a soft smudgy look. I then added the darker shade on the crease to open up her eyes.’
Liz has a clever hack to help you get the application spot-on – try not to smile when you’re applying this makeup! ‘I suggest you look directly into a mirror and keep a neutral face so you can see exactly where the darker eyeshadow needs to go. I use a blending brush to ensure there are no hard edges.’
‘I finished the look with a navy pencil eyeliner in her top and bottom waterline to make sure there was no skin visible between her upper lashes,’ says Liz. ‘I also winged the navy pencil out on the eyelid to create an extended line and create lift. The look was completed with a good curl of the lashes and coatings of black mascara.’
The blue tones really suit Gabby’s green eyes, but according to Liz there are no set rules on this one: ‘I actually like loads of different eyeshadow colours on lots of different colour eyes,’ she tells us.
In this case though, her inspiration came directly from Gabby's dress. ‘Sometimes it’s more about the outfit than the eye colour’. There you have it, Gabby is proof you can coordinate your outfit and makeup without looking matchy-matchy!
If you’re still worried about blue eyeshadow looking too 80s, consider what else you pair it with. ‘I’d recommend avoiding using the highlighters as they can really date a blue eyeshadow,’ says Liz. Step away from the Strobe Cream!
