Gone are the days when foundation sticks were hard, dry and a pain to blend. Although the revival of Y2K has brought back some of our favourite beauty trends of the early 2000s, those chalky stick foundations are firmly stuck in the past, instead making way for today’s much improved offerings. The new wave of ultra-hydrating formulas expertly rolls convenience, coverage and a radiant finish into one space-saving base product. And, frankly, we’re smitten.

If you’ve only ever dabbled in liquid foundations, the concept of a stick offering you just as seamless a finish (if not more) is likely confusing, but the pros of opting for a foundation stick in 2025 are practically endless. Not only are they now packed full of hardworking skincare ingredients, foundation sticks can deliver a natural but perfected finish in just a few quick swipes.

And as well as seeing a rise in popularity, foundation sticks are nothing if not topical as summer starts to call. For overpackers and weekend break-ers alike, these travel-friendly formulas remove the risk of spills and free up essential space in your suitcase when you’re on the move. Best of all, they don’t count as a liquid in your hand luggage – a boon since we’re still waiting for a national roll-out of new airport scanners that will eventually do away with the 100ml-or-less rule.

In short, sticks are a one-stop shop for a flawless base that both your skin and suitcase will thank you for. So, whatever your skin type or skill set when it comes to makeup, here are our best expert-backed tips for a quick application, plus the top 10 foundation sticks to try out.

What are the benefits of using a foundation stick?

According to Amanda Bell, Pixi’s global director of artistry, one of the biggest selling points of foundation sticks is that they offer a foolproof, simple application – ideal for makeup novices. ‘Swift and quick to apply, foundation sticks blend out seamlessly, whether you prefer using your fingers, a brush or a sponge.’

They also offer a non-cakey skin-like finish, which especially suits dry or mature skin, or anyone after a minimalistic look. ‘Their effortlessly buildable texture allows you to customise your coverage with ease, from a soft, natural finish to something more defined and polished – all without ever feeling heavy on the skin,’ adds Amanda.

Jamie Coombes, international pro artist at Dior Makeup, explains that versatility is also key with foundation sticks. ‘Depending on your personal style of makeup, they can be used as an all-over foundation or to conceal and contour,’ he says. ‘Most sticks have a medium coverage that can be layered, and again, the texture makes the skin appear smoother in a natural way.’

But for those with packed schedules or overflowing suitcases, foundation sticks’ dual benefit of speed and space saving is what sets them apart. ‘Particularly for those with busy lifestyles, the formula has many advantages,’ says Hollie Burke, pro artist at Bobbi Brown.

‘They serve as the perfect companion for on-the-go moments—whether you're commuting, refreshing your makeup during the day or transitioning from desk to dance floor. Plus, a stick formula ensures there’s no risk of spills, making them a reliable choice to keep in your bag without any mess.’

How have modern foundation sticks improved?

We’ve seen a rise in skincare-makeup hybrids recently (from foundations to powders) and foundation sticks are front and centre of this new wave. ‘Today, formulas are largely skincare-infused, often containing natural ingredients, so the textures are buttery and melt into the skin,’ explains Jamie.

‘This also means that they’re breathable and longer-wearing (ie more resilient against oils and sweat than in past formulas).’

And with skin-loving ingredients comes that subtle, ‘no makeup makeup’ look. ‘These formulas have evolved significantly in their blendability as well, and how skin-like their finish appears,’ adds Amanda. This means that instead of the dry, often cakey offerings of the early 2000s, foundation sticks in 2025 are flattering on all skin types.

‘Enhanced with blurring pigments, they deliver a smooth, flawless look that mimics the natural texture of skin, not only perfecting the complexion but nourishing it,’ she explains. ‘This makes them suitable and accessible whatever your skin type, including sensitive and mature skin.’

What should I look for in a foundation stick?

The best foundation sticks won’t drag on your skin, but rather offer an easily blendable, buttery texture. Particular skincare-quality ingredients will always elevate formulas as well. ‘Think plant-based oils, humectants and added vitamins that not only improve performance but also support skin health with every application,’ advises Amanda.

It’s also essential to consider your skin type and desired level of coverage when shopping for a foundation stick. Jamie tells GH: ‘For dry skin, choose a glowy texture with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid to bring radiance to your complexion. For oily skin, look for oil-free, mattifying oil-control formulas with mineral pigments that blur away imperfections and shine.’

These days, there are countless options for light, medium and full coverage – though many formulas are easily buildable, for when a certain occasion calls for a fuller face.

Are foundation sticks suitable for mature skin?

Absolutely – ‘I love to use them on mature skin!’ says Jamie. ‘The balm-like, buttery texture smooths the skin, creating a hydrated and blurred effect without being heavy.’ This means that any fine lines and texture can be easily concealed, with minimal product or effort.

Amanda also recommends opting for a particularly moisturising foundation stick, without a matte finish, when working with mature skin. ‘They offer a smooth, radiant finish that perfects the complexion while allowing you to precisely tailor coverage to the areas that need it most. The result is a natural, luminous look that enhances, rather than masks, the skin.’

For oilier mature skin, opt for a mattifying primer underneath your foundation and finish with a hydrating setting spray.

How should I apply a foundation stick?

Whatever’s in your toolkit (or whether you prefer to use your fingers alone), the beauty of a foundation stick is that it’s quick and easy to apply.

‘A foundation stick can be applied directly on to the skin in stripes – on the cheek, jawline, forehead, nose and chin,’ explains Jamie. ‘You can use your fingers to smooth over your complexion, allowing you to work on more targeted areas to conceal blemishes or under the eyes.’

Or, if you’re partial to a beauty blender, Jamie suggests dampening it first – either with water or a setting spray – as ‘a damp sponge will offer a more natural, sheer result.’

Hollie adds: ‘I love applying foundation sticks with a brush as it really helps to even out the skin tone and build coverage where needed.’ She suggests buffing the brush into the end of the stick to pick up the product, then applying it across the face, blending in downward strokes in the direction of the hair for a lightweight finish.

Amanda echoes this: ‘When applying foundation with a brush, I blend using circular motions with a densely bristled brush to ensure a seamless, even finish. Then, I set everything in place with a light dusting of loose translucent powder, followed by a mist to lock in the look and add a natural radiance.’
