Yes, in theory, the 1st January has an “up and at ‘em” energy but, let’s face it, there’s a high chance we will have over indulged during the festive period and spend most of the day slumped on our sofas. So, instead of pretending that we’ll be energetically embarking on our new year’s health kick, let’s own our decision to ease ourselves into 2025 by planning a day of fantastic TV treats.

Here's our top highlights of what to watch on New Year’s Day

Harlan Coben’s Missing You, Netflix

It wouldn’t be New Year’s Day without a glossy adaptation of a Harlan Coben novel starring Richard Armitage – and 2025 doesn’t disappoint. Missing You is the story of Detective Kat Donovan (Slow Horses’ Rosaline Eleazer) whose fiancé (Ashley Walters) suddenly disappears, never to be heard of again – until, that is, one day she swipes through profiles on her dating app and spots him. Yep, ghosting just got seriously gripping.

Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell, BBC1, 7pm

By the time you watch this one-off documentary, you will have already seen the epic final episode of Gavin & Stacey on Christmas day and said an emotional goodbye to Gavin, Stacey, Smithy, Nessa et al. This special tribute goes behind the scenes on the making of the finale, plus looks back at the history of James Cordon and Ruth Jones’ heartwarming and hilarious show. Tidy!

What to read next

The Traitors, BBC1, 8pm

We couldn’t be more excited about the new series of The Traitors as some things are guaranteed. Firstly, that we will instantly become obsessed with the lies and game-playing of the Faithfuls and Traitors, getting overly invested in the drama-filled round tables and secret squirrel sessions in the Traitors’ turret. Secondly, that we will spend an inordinate amount of time hunting for capes, fingerless gloves and fabulous knits inspired by our fashion icon, Claudia Winkleman. Oh, and we will also consider getting a high-maintenance fringe for approx. 30 seconds before coming to our senses.

SAS Rogue Heroes, BBC1, 9pm

If you haven’t seen series one of Steven Knight’s excellent SAS Rogue Heroes, then catch up on BBC iPlayer before embarking on this second series. Based on the well-researched book by Ben Macintyre of the same name, it’s the compelling story of the formation of the Special Air Service and their incredibly daring escapades. As series 2 picks up, it’s 1943 and the irascible Paddy Mayne (Jack O’Connell) is leading the boys from North Africa to Sicily to help in the liberation of Europe, while poor David Stirling (Connor Swindells) is languishing in a prisoner of war camp.

Gogglebox Festive Special, Channel 4, 9pm

Yes, we watched a lot of the featured shows over the festive period, but it doesn’t stop us from wanting to know what our favourite Goggleboxers thought of them too. What did the Siddiquis think of Doctor Who? How did best mates Jenny and Lee react to EastEnders? Did Giles have to steady an overcome Mary during the King’s speech? We can’t wait to find out.
