The BBC is launching a pop-up channel of nostalgic archive programmes on BBC iPlayer, alongside curated collections and further TV and radio content. A new 'season' of content called Memories and Dementia: Starting the Conversation is aimed at evoking memories for those living with dementia, to help start conversations with their friends, families and carers. The project is led by Dr Punam Krishan, who is the resident GP on BBC's Morning Live.

"I see patients with dementia in my practice – and know the strain the condition can place on people – as well as on their family and friends. One thing that can really help is reminiscence," she said in a BBC release. "Using media like TV, pictures, or music, that captures history, or follows a familiar place, or interest, something that evokes memories which can help start a conversation with loved ones and carers."

The iPlayer channel called Memories will live stream a selection of programmes from the 60s, 70s and 80s which are "the best in arts entertainment, culture and news events of the era" explained the BBC. Shows will include, "the 1969 special edition of Panorama marking man's first steps on the surface of the moon, Philip Donnellan's 1964 film The Colony, Abba’s victory in the grand final of the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, and Keith Floyd’s classic 1987 food series Floyd on France," among others.

Viewers will also be able to stream from three dedicated collections of content from these decades on BBC iPlayer and on BBC Sounds. There's also a Back To Back Sounds playlist called 'Music to Reminisce' featuring music from across the decades, as well as relaxing sounds.

"While viewing these programmes may not lead to immediate, dramatic responses for those living with dementia, studies show they can have significant value in helping create connections and moments of recognition with their friends and family," said the BBC.

Throughout this week, live TV and radio shows will also address themes of dementia across the BBC network. On TV, an Eastenders storyline sees character Nigel Bates coping with young on-set dementia (those who experience symptoms before the age of 65), while Dr Punam will explore the impact of the condition on Morning Live. The One Show will also air a special film from actor Kola Bokinni who shares the story of his father's dementia diagnosis.

The BBC worked with organisations including Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia UK and Alzheimer Scotland to put together the season.
