When the fifth series of ITV’s beloved crime drama, Grace, came to a dramatic end last month, we were left with one burning question: will there be more? Well, we have a surprise for you as the series is indeed returning and its upcoming sixth series is uniting stars of crime dramas, Blue Lights and Grantchester. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better...
Grantchester’s Rishi Nair and Blue Lights’ Hannah McClean will join John Simm as he steps back into the shoes of Brighton-based Detective Superintendent Roy Grace. And, with series 5 having ended on a serious cliffhanger (we did not see that revelation coming!), it seems series 6 is going to be very eventful indeed.
Ahead of its arrival on our screens, here's everything you need to know about Grace series 6, including the cast, plot and how to watch it.
What is ITV's Grace about?
The series is set in Brighton and based on the bestselling novels by Peter James. The first ever episode aired in March 2021, with John Simm starring in the lead role of Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, a tenacious detective haunted by the disappearance of his wife, Sandy. Over the course of five series, he and sidekick Glenn Branson (Richie Campbell) have investigated everything from a missing groom to a vicious robbery and a 30-year-old murder case.
The most recent fifth series, which concluded in April, adapted four more stories from James’s books, Dead If You Don’t, Dead At First Sight, Need You Dead and Find Them Dead. We saw him deal with cases including a missing teenager, a gang of fraudsters running an online dating agency, as well as themes including drugs, trafficking and judicial blackmail. The series also opened with a devastating revelation about Grace and partner Cleo’s (Zoë Tapper) private life – they’d lost their unborn child.
What will happen in Grace series 6?
The new series will consist of four more standalone episodes based on Peter James’s book. If series 6 follows the same format as the previous ones, the titles for the new series are likely to include Left You Dead, Picture You Dead, Stop Them Dead and One of Us Is Dead. While the plot details haven’t yet been confirmed, we do know that John Simm will be back as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace to solve more cases.
If you haven’t watched series 5, you may want to skip over this part, but the final instalment, Find Them Dead, ended with a major twist. We saw Roy Grace visit fallen police chief, Cassian Pewe (Sam Hoare) behind bars, and Cassian revealed how organised crime gang Benchdale OCG took Roy’s wife Sandy's life over an unsettled debt and staged her death as a suicide. In series 6, we're expecting to find out more.
John Simm says of the new series: "This is the longest I’ve been involved in any show! But it’s such a joy to do, and to be surrounded by a team like this for large chunks of the year makes it impossible to turn down. I’m really looking forward to seeing where Roy’s journey goes in this series."
He also gave some hints about what’s ahead, telling ITV: "Trust me, there’s loads more to come. Nothing is ever tied up - just when you think it’s all done it’s not, there’s plenty more in store. This series ends on a bit of a cliffhanger too –there’s a huge storyline that we will pick up in series six and the stakes get higher every season."
