The best wool bedding and why it's the surprising solution to hot nights

It's not just for blankets and cosy knits

We all know that wool is great for jumpers, coats and blankets, but it doesn't exactly scream best bedding, does it?

But, over the past few years here at the Good Housekeeping Institute, we’ve started to see more of the best duvets, best pillows and best mattress toppers filled with the stuff. They come with some big claims about how effective the fibre is at regulating temperature and how moisture wicking it is – making it a supposedly ideal solution for hot, sweaty sleepers.

So, we’ve compiled a list of our best wool bedding, looking through feedback to see what our panellists really thought, and we spoke to an expert about its benefits beyond winter clothing and throws.

Why does wool make a good duvet or pillow filling?

We wanted to know more about why wool is touted as a good sleep solution, so we spoke to Graham Clark, marketing director of British Wool, to find out more. He told us wool is “the perfect material for sleeping on and under”, for myriad reasons including its role as a “natural insulator”.

“It keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer,” he says. “This is down to wool’s temperature-controlling capabilities. Just think about how a fleece works when it's on the back of a sheep!”

Wool naturally absorbs moisture, too. "It can absorb up to 30% of its weight without feeling damp or heavy,” according to Clark.“When sleeping, wool wicks the sweat away from your body keeping bedding fresh and dry, which is then released into the atmosphere. This ensures a better night’s sleep.” The way it repels moisture, and doesn’t trap it, also makes it resistant to mildew and mould, again keeping your bedroom fresher.

It’s also a more sustainable buy, “Wool is renewable (it grows on the back of a sheep every year) and also biodegradable – at the end of its life 100% of wool will biodegrade naturally if buried and not contribute to landfill unlike other products,” says Clark.

These benefits come with a high price tag. But it's a durable pick that should last you for years. “You can bend a wool fibre over 20,000 times without it breaking,” Clarks says. “This means wool products will last for a long time and maintain their bulk, loft and appearance.”

For maximum benefits, he suggests you should “cocoon” yourself in wool – there’s no point investing in a wool-filled duvet, only for a polyester pillow to leave you feeling hot-headed and uncomfortable. Natural fibre bed sheets (like linen or Egyptian cotton) pair well with it, too.

“Once you make the changes, you’ll never go back – I am talking from experience!” Clark promises.

What to consider when shopping for wool bedding

Investing in a wool duvet, pillow or topper is much like buying a hollowfibre, down or foam design. You need to consider if it will meet your support, comfort and care requirements.

Some of the pillows below are adjustable, which will help find your perfect height, but wool won't rival memory foam when it comes to overall support, so it's a question of balancing how hot you get with the level of cushioning you need.

For duvets, you'll need to think about warmth and seasonality. Unlike other duvet fillings, wool isn't always measured in togs, but brands should give guidance on the weather it's designed for, making it easy to decide if you want one made for winter, summer or all seasons.

Lastly, consider how you'll care for your new bedding. Not all wool items are machine washable, so you'll have to consider whether you're happy with spot cleaning it or dry cleaning.

If you're an especially hot sleeper, we've tested the best cooling bedding featuring pillows, duvets, bed sheets and toppers. We've also tested the best cooling pyjamas to help banish sweaty nights.

How we test wool bedding

To find the best wool duvets, pillows and mattress toppers, our testers enlist the help of a panel of readers. They try each product out at home over a period of weeks before filling in a survey, detailing how comfortable the product was, what its quality was like, whether they found it breathable, and if they'd recommend it.

Back at the Good Housekeeping Institute lab, our experts carry out extensive wash tests (where applicable) to make sure the bedding maintains its size, quality and loft night after night.

These are our best buys.

Joint best wool duvet

Slumberdown Wonderful Wool Double Duvet – Heavyweight

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Wonderful Wool Double Duvet – Heavyweight

Score: 91/100

“This duvet was a joy to sleep under,” testers told us. It’s made with British wool and ticked their boxes for cosy comfort and premium quality. While we tested the heavyweight version (which is the equivalent to a ten to 13.5 tog duvet), our panel told us it wasn’t too heavy, and they were impressed with its temperature regulation.“I frequently wake up too warm in the middle of the night; however, that didn't happen with this duvet,” one told us.

It’s spot-wash only, which makes it trickier to care for than some, plus it made a crinkly noise and had a slight wool smell – but nothing that put our testers off. In fact, it was apparently “like sleeping in a cloud”. Delightful.

Rise and Fall The Luxury British Wool Double Duvet – 10.5 Tog

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
The Luxury British Wool Double Duvet – 10.5 Tog

Score: 91/100

For a real treat of a duvet, consider our other joint winner. It’s made with traceable British wool, and it lived up to the ‘Luxury’ in its name. The outer cover was soft to touch, it was quiet to sleep under, and was declared an all-round snuggly buy, which is good because it comes with a premium price tag.

Testers praised its breathability, and it’s suitable for dry cleaning, which is handy if you’re concerned about caring for it. It’s bulky if you plan to pack it away for spring, but it left our testers fully converted to the wonders of wool.

Woolroom Deluxe Washable Wool Pillow

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Deluxe Washable Wool Pillow

Score: 87/100

This pillow is adjustable, so you can remove (or add) wool to make it the perfect height and firmness for you. Unsurprisingly, then, our testers found it really supportive and comfy. As for breathability, most were satisfied with it – one said that despite getting hot at night, “the pillow remained cool”.

The cover lived up to its washable name too, emerging from the machine in pristine condition. And testers liked that the label tells you how to trace the wool.

 Adjustable Wool Pillow

Score: 86/100

This luxury pillow – which is crafted from fully traceable British wool with a 260-thread count cotton cover – is also fully adjustable, making it suitable for all sleep styles. The filling can be hand teased for a plumper, loftier feel or reshaped if you prefer something firm and flat.

The majority of our panel said it offered the right level of support, although some commented it needed regular readjusting. All testers said they slept well when using this pillow, noting that it was quiet, effective at regulating temperature and easy to wash. They also liked the “high quality” packaging and handy cloth bag for storage.

Best wool mattress topper

Slumberdown Wonderful Wool Mattress Topper

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Wonderful Wool Mattress Topper

Score: 84/100

Another entry from Slumberdown, this topper – which is made in the UK using 100% natural fabrics – is a lightweight layer designed to soften your mattress, without adding too much bulk.

Thanks to the thermo-regulating wool filling and breathable cotton cover, testers said it kept them at just the right temperature overnight, with no overheating reported. The long, elasticated straps were quick and easy to attach, and the topper was true to size.

Just note, it is on the shallow side (look elsewhere for plush comfort) and it can only be spot cleaned.

Woolroom Chatsworth Wool Mattress Topper – Double

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Chatsworth Wool Mattress Topper – Double

Score: 82/100

This mattress topper is designed for a softer night’s sleep. Like the Slumberdown option above, it’s not particularly thick, so you won’t sink into it too much, but that does mean it packs away well.

We found the wool was well distributed throughout and quilted in place, although our expert could feel a bit of the stitching through the bedsheet used on test. It was easy to fit and stayed secure, despite any movement, proving particularly popular with our panel who awarded it high scores.

In fact, the only qualms were regarding its breathability, with some finding it could get warm, making it better suited to cosier winter nights.

Our verdict on wool bedding

While most of our testers found wool bedding pleasingly breathable, it wasn't the case for everyone, highlighting how individual sleep solutions are.

That said, as bedding pick overall, it's undeniably comfortable and cosy – and generally pretty premium. If your budget stretches, any of the duvets, pillows and mattress toppers on our list would help you create a luxurious, hotel-worthy sleep set-up.

For a more affordable entry into the world of wool bedding, we recommend combining Slumberdown's Wonderful Wool Duvet with Woolroom's Deluxe Washable Wool Pillow.
