If you’re a fan of Nordic crime thrillers and have already binged Netflix’s The Åre Murders, you’ll be interested to know that there’s a brilliant new Finnish series coming to Channel 4 this week. Deception is the suspense-driven drama that tells a gripping tale of revenge – so gripping, in fact, that you’ll want to binge it in one go.
The eight-part series will introduce us to Riku (Daniel Virtanen), a criminal posing as a member of the wealthy elite, who infiltrates Helsinki high society to wreak revenge. His master plan is to rob his new “friends” – only Riku finds himself falling for an heiress, and fighting against the pleasures that his new jet-set environment brings.
With just days to go before the show’s release, here’s everything you need to know about it, including the plot, cast and how you can watch it.
What is Deception about?
The Finnish series will introduce us to Riku (Daniel Virtanen), a mysterious newcomer at an exclusive Helsinki gym. Posing as a wealthy air, he earns the trust of gym owner Joakim (Elias Gould) and his fiancée Linda (Marketta Tikkanen) – seamlessly entering into their glamorous world. Riku’s true identity, however, is very different.
His past is one of hardship, crime and an attempted robbery that left his half-brother wounded and a serious debt to pay to a local drug-lord. He hasn’t entered Joakim and Linda’s world because he wants a fresh start – he’s done so because he wants revenge. And he wants to pay off his debt.
As Riku starts to get a taste for the high life that becomes all too addictive, he also embarks on a dangerous affair with Linda. But Riku has a plan his underworld associates – and his brother - insist he must press ahead with. So, is he in too deep, or will he get the revenge they’ve been seeking?
